    I was fed up with seeing my cubes on the rack empty so I decided to build some no filter, ecosystem aquariums for some Neocaridina shrimp breeding. I've put 4 different shrimp varieties in each tank and will hopefully get a bunch of breeding.

      @MD Fish Tanks when I first got into fish keeping (decades ago, lol) I used my uncle's Polaroid to take a picture of each type of fish and wrote the Latin and common name underneath.
      If they had sexual dimorphism, I got a picture of each and labeled ♀️or♂️
      At first I kept the pictures close to the tank... but when I developed MTS and started breeding, I moved all my pictures to a 3 ring binder, and sectioned by tank.

    What if you did a '4 seasons' set of shrimp tanks? Each tank trying to capture each of the 4 seasons. Spring could be lots of bright colors, summer simple greens with some warm colors, reds & orange planting for fall & something with a lot of whites & blues for winter! Would be a cool story, contrasting tanks & would push you creatively!

    I think you missed a trick by not using one long piece of wood, cut to the widths of the cubes, so it looked like one long tank but with divisions. Not that it matters much, they look great as always!

    Nicely done, MD! Want to try something fun with the shrimp? I take some small spinach leaves out of the organic spinach box from the grocery store and put them in a measuring cup with about 2" of water then into the microwave for about 3 minutes to wilt the leaves. After they've cooled (my wife wised me up to just put the lot into the fridge for a bit) pick up the wilted spinach leaves with the tweezers and place them somewhere on the bottom. It took them a bit to figure it out the first time, but now they're on the leaves in no time and overnight it's all gone! My Otocinclus love it too, and I'm guessing the Plecos do as well but they're likely on it in the middle of the night. MTC

    To increase the odds of a successful shrimp tank I’d highly recommend drip acclimating the shrimp. The molting process is relative to their water quality so letting them acclimate to the new parameters as slowly as possible is your best bet. Also, when adding hardscape consider which stones will leach minerals into the water column, which increases your gH (hardness), which in turn can negatively impact your shrimps lifespan. Neos can withstand a broader range but caridinas are sensitive as hell.

    • @DaffCookie
      @DaffCookie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only have Neos and only do the float and dump too. Only death I've had was when I found 1 cherry inside my spray bar somehow :(
      Quick swap to sponge filter then!
      They are always moulting. 1 Ammano is as big as my female cory :o

    The thing with rainbow fish isn't just that there are loads of species but there are loads of colour morphs within each species based on location. Makes sence when you think about how most of them are from creeks and smaller rivers, lots of smaller populations that are isolated to some degree. It's why your not supposed to release even native species that are endemic to your area cos they can interbreed with the local population and cause the extinction of that colour morph.

    12:10: the water *does* make the superglue react! Unlike other glues, which "dry", cyanoacrylate gardens via a polymerization reaction, which is catalysed by moisture. So not only does water speed it up, if you were in a completely dry environment (no humidity in the air either) superglue would never harden, I believe.

    In my experience, it’s very rare to ever find a body of a neocaridina. They are eaten by the others or dissolve into the substrate. It’s may not be accurate to say there’s never any die off. You may just not notice. Shrimp are all I have so I’m aware when the population numbers decrease.

    You should get some millennium Rainbowfish for that Rainbowfish tank!! I saw them at a store recently and they were the nicest rainbows I’ve ever seen in my life

    I was on a snail group and was told to avoid lava rock with snails and shrimp as it forms with small amounts of copper which leaches into the water as well as cutting snails foot and slowing healing. Have you used lava rock successfully in shrimp tanks? Love it but took it out to avoid making them sick.

    a cool idea could be that the scape "connect" between the tanks, pretending to be one big piece. i'll love to see that.

    You could have put the aquatic compost in one of your zipper bags and covered it with sand
