  • On Day One of my Boundary Waters canoe trip, I make my way from the Sea Gull Lake landing to a campsite in the northern part of Red Rock Lake. Along the way, I stop to climb the Sea Gull Palisades and enjoy the view from there.

    Very nice video, thanks a lot. I do not think I have been on those lakes. I have done two or three trips over in that eastern region of the BWCA.

    Haha, yes, I started in August saying the mosquitoes were supposed to be gone by now and before we knew it we were backpacking in October and I was still saying the mosquitoes were supposed to be gone by now. Couldn't believe I saw them in October up by Lake Superior. Thanks for sharing another beautiful video!

      We had them in September last year on our BW trip, but definitely not in the numbers you would have earlier in the season. It was nice to just sit around the campfire at dusk and not get carried off:-)

      I wasn't able to get out much after the August trip. I'm surprised the cold days we got towards the end of this trip didn't kill the little blood suckers off. They were definitely bad last year. Thanks for watching!

    Very pretty lake. Stayed on it last September and had a great time. I checked out that campsite last year and slipped on that flat rock right on my butt. Ended up staying on the site just to the north of you.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That landing was definitely tough. From the photos I took back in '09, it looks like I landed on the other side of the campsite on that trip -- the landing that I said didn't look so good in this video. Then, I apparently opted for rocky over slippery. Yes, Red Rock is a beautiful lake. Too bad I haven't had a chance to really explore it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Great view of the Boundary Waters there Larry. It never stops pleasing the eye. Speaking of pleasing the eye it was nice to see Sam stood there on the rock - such wonderful memories we have of our friends. A memory lane on the waters. All the best. Mark

      Mark, Thanks for stopping by and for your wonderful comment. Yes, the Boundary Waters is full of "eye-candy". I sure wish Sam could have joined me on this trip but I'm certain we'll have many more enjoyable trips together in the years to come. It was great revisiting that campsite and reliving the memories. We still have snow on the ground here at the moment but the forecast is for warming temperatures that should melt all of it soon. I'm really starting to look forward to putting winter behind me and getting back to paddling once again.

    Great video Larry, thanks for taking us up on the Palisades this time, what a beauty spot. I was snowshoeing with my grandson yesterday on six feet of snow, this video got me in the mood for more so I am now watching your 2015 Moose River trip. I’m loving all the snow and cold this year but maybe I could get used to the idea of summer with watching more BW trips.

      Thanks Roger, while I would have liked to get another winter camping trip in, my overall feeling is that winter has now overstayed its welcome. Lots of cold this year while not all that much snow here. I'm ready for Spring, open water and paddling. It was a joy taking you up on the Palisades this time. I had a much better day to do so than I did last year. Roll on summer. As always, thanks for watching and for the wonderful comment.

    Loved it Larry ! Looked like much of that area, had been burned over in the past ? At the very end, That Tandem was Loaded ! Looked like a living room Couch ! Great shotsfrom the Palisades. Looks like a place I should go !

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was burned over in the Cavity Lake Fire in the summer of 2006. Areas south and east of Sea Gull were further burned during the Ham Lake Fire the following year. 11 years to recover as much as it has now. Yes, that tandem was loaded. Might have been USFS people heading in to replace latrines. Or, some very inexperienced paddlers. They did seem to be very loudly discussing where they were supposed to be heading. Sea Gull and the surrounding area is very nice... although Sea Gull can be tough to cross when the wind blow up. Thanks as always!

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Martin, Sea Gull is beautiful but those islands can make it tricky to navigate. It's large enough that it can get very iffy in high winds. Thankfully, I had relatively calm conditions on this trip. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! Much appreciated.

    Larry, I know that it is a lot of extra effort to make a video of a trip. It would be a lot easier and maybe enjoyable for you if you
    didn't bother with the camera gear and setting up and retrieving the camera and tripod. But having said that, I must tell you that
    I really enjoy going on these trips with you. I live 25 hours away from the BWCA, so it would be difficult for me to make the trip.
    Also, I am 73 years old and portaging may be in my past. Keep on giving my friend. I wish we could do a trip together some time.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louie, While it would be a lot easier not to do them, I do get enjoyment out of conceiving of and executing those shots where I have to set up and then retrieve the camera and tripod. And it makes it all worthwhile to know that people, like you, enjoy and appreciate the results. Thanks for coming along with me and also for your comment. Maybe, someday, a trip together would work out. I hope you continue to enjoy my videos.

    Love your videos. Professional quality and outstanding.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Louie. Personally, I'd much rather carry 2 small packs than one large pack. It may mean walking more but smaller packs fit in the canoe and on my back much better. On a week long trip, I use the smallest Cooke Custom Sewing (CCS) Hybrid Pack (Explorer) for equipment and one of the CCS rucksacks for food and kitchen stuff. This was intended to be a 16 day trip so I replaced the rucksack with a 2nd CCS Explorer. At 65 years of age, I need a few extra luxuries (eg. camp chair). I also need to keep the weight down somewhat on each carry. To each their own. I've been tripping for many, many years and what I do works for me.

    Hi Larry. Really enjoy your videos. We’re heading to Seagull in August. About how long does it take to paddle to the Alpine Lake portage? Thanks in advance and I hope you get some trips in this year.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bosco, I need to go back and check the time stamps on my videos to get a rough idea. Unfortunately, I'm in Ely right now and my files are in Rochester. I'm thinking a couple of hours. Just remember, I travel solo and take a lot of photos and video along the way so, whatever time it takes me can most likely be beat. Of course, it also depends on wind conditions, whether a person gets turned around or, as was the case on this particular trip, whether a person decides to take time out to climb the palisade. ;-) I'll try to remember to check my videos when I get back to Rochester. Hope you have a great time in August. I'm sure I'll get a couple of trips this year.

    I was wondering if you ever get out of range of an NWS weather transmitter while paddling around the BWCA. So I looked on the web and found a page www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/coverage/station_search.php which lets you search for stations. It looks like there are 4 in the BWCA area, and the nearest to Red Rock Lake is about 12 miles SW on the Gunflint Trail. I'm sure you could climb a local hill or paddle out away from shore (if circumstances permit) for a better signal when reception is rough.
    Do the Canadians have similar weather transmitters you can hear?
    Once again, great views of the lakes!

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can usually get a station from Grand Marais when I'm on the east side of the wilderness and one from Ely when I'm on the west side. The problem with the GM station is that you get all the Lake Superior info -- have to wait a very long time sometimes to get information pertaining to the interior. I've only had a few times when I couldn't get either one although, at times, it's been a struggle. I remember, on one trip, something happened to the Ely transmitter and I was actually receiving a station from North Dakota! (or, maybe it was the ND station was transmitting too strongly). I've never come across anything from Canada.
      Thanks!

    • @NWMinnesota
      @NWMinnesota 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bit of research shows that the Canadians also have weather broadcasts, apparently on the same set of frequencies as the U.S. stations. Locations closest to the BWCA are Thunder Bay, Fort Francis (International Falls), and Atikokan. Of those three, Atikokan is probably the only one you would hear from your canoe, and that would be best on the big waters of Lac Lacroix. It is on 162.400 MHz, Channel 1 on my radio.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for researching that... good info to know. Whenever I start having trouble with the station I'm on, I start scanning for others and have never come across any of the Canadian Channels. It's always been either Ely or Grand Marais (other than the one time I received the ND station referenced in my previous comment). I almost always listen at my campsite, not from my canoe. Thanks again!

    From Sea Gull to Alpine why the 100 rd portage instead of the 30 rd north of it and canoe around the bend?

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I haven't personally tried the alternate route, I've been told it's not as easy as it looks. Another viewer had the same question and subsequently tried going via the 30 rod portage. He reported back that it's definitely better to take the 100. I can't remember the details but I'm sure it includes a stream that's not very canoeable (especially in low water) and a portage that has poor landings and, possibly, a very rocky path -- or, maybe it's wet and mucky -- I don't know for sure. Shorter isn't always better. My general rule of thumb... if there are two ways to get from Lake A to Lake B, there's usually a very good reason there's a longer one.

    Hi Larry, I enjoy your videos big time. I was wondering, which of your cameras are you using to film/record when you are on the water and first exploring a new camp? Is it the small Nikon? Are your big cameras for professional stills?

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Louie! Whenever I'm moving -- on the water, portaging, exploring campsites, etc. -- I'm using one of my small Nikons (W300 or AW130). Most of the time, when the camera isn't moving, I'm using the D5500 (SLR) although, occasionally, I'll use one of the small cameras for this as well. The D7200 (SLR) is used for time lapses. Both the D5500 and D7200 are used for stills.
