      Thank you, thank you, thank you - I want to be around for many more years as well. I got scared of the incoming storms and came back early and I am glad I did. I will shoot here at home for a while and look at flying up again for a weekend within the next couple of weeks when the weather is better. My little FWD car and regular tires where not having fun in that rain. Fine for here in Los Angeles but not out there. And even cutting it short, it was an AWESOME trip and adventure I was constantly aware of the temps, the bridges, the wet and hoping NOT to hit black ice. 🙏💖🤗

    I have the R5 and R7. Been using the 400F2.8 and 100-400. Having seen enough positive reviews, I'm thinking this 200-800 may be my next lens. My concerns about low light were not near what they were with DOF. These examples clearly demonstrate the compression at the longer end make up for F9 aperture quite nicely. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to your Washington vids.

    I just got my 200-800 for my R5, R7, and R8 and I couldn't be happier so far. I had the RF 800 f/11 and sold that to get this one. I can't wait to use it more but it's a great lens with a few little quirks that aren't deal breakers for me. I would say if you buy this lens to fill the frame with smaller objects that are fairly close you will be much happier than if you buy this lens to get good shots of smaller subjects in the distance. Like with any lens getting close is the best thing you can do to get sharp detailed shots. Cheers.

    Hello, and good morning from Florida. I am still rather new at all this and looking to get more serious with bird photography. Love the flexibility of the 200-800mm. My question is would I be further ahead buying a used ef 500mm prime that I can buy in good condition for just a few 100 dollars more. I currently have the RF 100-400mm which is pretty good for what it’s meant for. Big investment, so I know it’s good to ask people with far more knowledge than me. Thank you in advance.

    • @johnbrotherton4382
      @johnbrotherton4382 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know that’s not an easy question. But I just want to avoid spending and spending. If you were at this point to pick 1 lens, I was just hoping for your thoughts. You have used them all. The original ef 500mm which is over8 pounds. And the new zooms that have come in the last few years. They can all be bought at a similar price.

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Let me reply to both here!!! A prime like the 500 or the 600... fantastic lenses, fantastic clarity but limiting. There is no zoom other than you stepping back and they are heavy on long walks or hikes. You can hand hold but they do work better on a gimbal but that too then is limiting. The 200-800 really is an awesome lens but is a little hard to get at the moment. i LOVE the zoom but I hate the placement of the focus ring. Great light lens, flexible but does need light. I like it better on the R5 over the R7. The 100-500 even with 1.4 extender is my favorite overall. It does get expensive but the shots are so clear. It works awesome on both the R5 and R7 with the R7 having the added reach of the crop. You do lose some of the zoom though. The 100-400 you have is a good lens but for me did not have enough reach and for what it is, for me was too slow. I prefer the original 100-400 EF one that I have as it is faster. Not as many sharp shots but it worked for me. There really is no perfect set up - they all have advantages and disadvantages. I usually just pick one and stick with that instead of taking more that one - switching I find to be inconvenient. And then too, dont forget about the processing of the images - that can make a difference as well. The JPEGs out of camera are really awesome but you can get more with the processing of the raw files. Go out and just have fun - that is the most important thing - enjoy being out. No set up is perfect for everything. And the other thing is that your style may be different than mine so what works for me, may not work for you in the same way. I buy from B&H because I know that if I just done like it, I send it back. I have done that with many items. I hope I didnt make it confusing LOL. 🙏💖🤗

      @@JonnyPink65 thank you so much for taking the time. Sounds like if I were to pick one lens, and one lens only, it’s hard to beat the 100-500. If I were to think with a work mentality, the 500 prime which is work to lug around, to get the best possible image, and probably not quit as fun. Thanks for putting in the time, to give me such a complete answer. Really appreciate you. Thank you

    • @JonnyPink65

      @@johnbrotherton4382 My pleasure. I love the photos I get with my 600 F4 and even with my 500 F4 when i had it, but the drawback was how limiting they really are. You have so many more options with a zoom. The additional 300mm of reach with the 200-800 is really awesome too...... on the R5. If the only body I had to shoot were the R7, I would pick the 100-500 which would still put me at 800mm with superior clarity. And what i may lack in reach, i crop into to get the placement I want if I missed it. The 100-500 is "L" glass like my favorite EF 70-200 and my 600 F4. The 200-800 is not but is white for heat reasons so the clarity, the coatings and such are not the same. See...... advantages and disadvantages. LOL I am a gear whore and spend like I dont have to pay it back. 💖🤗

      Interesting. If I keep the ISO low with this lens on the R7, I am happy with the images - sharp and clear. This lens is where I see some of the same things on both bodies as far as focus. I can totally imagine you preferring the R5, 1) because it's just a great camera, but 2) because of the varied nature of your photography.
    For me, I choose a lesser camera in nearly every respect.... Except one, reach 🙂 ....the R7.
    You got some great stuff with it on this trip 🙂👍
    Interesting (a little concerning actually) that you don't feel like it does as well on the R7 ?

      yep i also cant wait for proper 800 F11 vs 200-800 comparisons on R7 especially for the sake of sharpness and overall IQ
      My feeling is…. despite being a slow F11 and using Diffractive Optics (not good for image quality as much marketing hypes this nonsense) the 800 F11 will still have some sort of „prime look“, while the 200-800 can lose a bit depth and 3d pop as its typical for zoom lenses
      In various conditions also my Sigma 150-600 is easily spotted as the zoom lens with missing depth in the image

      @@Chris_Wolfgram I will tell you that the zoom and the shorter minimum focus distance give it the advantage over the F11!!! Plus you can focus across the entire screen unlike the F11 only in that little box. If you do buy it from some one that takes returns, no risk. Also, I think you could sell it and not lose money. You may really love it with its advantages over the F11! 🤗💖

      @@harrison00xXx I will say that there is not much difference between the two lenses at 800mm - you could not tell between F11 or F9. Both need a lot of light, but the 200-800 has more versatility with the zoom and focuses across the entire plain. Plus, it has a shorter MFD. From my experience adapting the Sigma 150-600, both of the RF lenses will outperform the adapted Sigma. I am hoping that Sigma does make announcements soon with native RF long glass - I am really looking forward to that. Those will probably out perform these 200-800 and 800 F11!! 🤗💖

      Believe it or not - still on the fence. Was trying to shoot in under cloudy stormy skies and the focus was not playing nice with the low light. Hello!!!! Well, the advantage you will have with this lens is the zoom. I really LOVE the zoom with is something I rarely use. I tend to keep my lenses at full extension - 100-500 is always out at 500, or 100-400 - always out at 400. I have really enjoyed the zoom. Every lens is personal based on what and we all shoot. This is not a lens for everyone due to the length (I find it a little unbalanced at the long end), and some will find it heavy - I do not. It is a lens that hunts a bit for focus sometimes and for that, I wish it had a focus limiter. I also think the lens would be more useful to those of us that use a manual focus ring for subject burred in a brush. For that, I wish the focus ring and programable button had been switched as far as position. It is a good lens that needs light to work at its best. Then, it takes some amazing photos. The F9 at 800mm as you know, compressed the background just fine - not as well as F4, but I usually have my 1.4 extender on the 600 F4 and even still, I get way more light. But...... I don't have the zoom... and it is heavy..... and has a longer minimum focus distance.. Will a lens like this work for your style of shooting? Everything has limitations and advantages. 🙏💖🤗

      I have not. I do not own one. I like a LARGE sensor which is why I like the R5 and the R7. The sensor on that and the R3 for me, are just too small and not what I want. If the R1 when it comes out is not a 45 megapixel camera, I wont get that either. I want as much data as I can get. 🙏💖🤗

    I've seen a few videos by other users with the R7
    I have distinct feeling that Canon hasn't fully admitted that the 200-800 Is only compatible with FFC .. Hence the issues with the R7 being a crop sensor camera

      I saw that persons video so I checked mine - it is fine. And as far as shooting it on the R7, it works great - in bright sunlight, but that is also the same for the 800 F11. For that reason, I really only use that on the R5 and I do prefer this on the R5 as well. However, if you can keep your shutter speed down a little and the ISO lower, it produces some great images. NO set up is perfect - we just have to work around the limitations. 🙏💖🤗

    I finally got a chance to get my hands on one of these lenses. For me, it's still sort of a specialty lens because of the aperture. Last week I had someone blurt out that the F/9 "isn't a problem". And I said, "So you would buy a 24-70 F/9 if they made one? Crickets. Of course he wouldn't. Nobody would. But F/9 is F/9 is F/9.
    I'm looking at some of those shots near the beginning. 1/1600, F/9, and Iso of just 320? You had some significant light. And that's fine. But it underscores the fact that while it's versatile in terms of focal range, it's less versatile in terms of use cases. I love the reach, obviously. Everybody will love the reach. But we love early morning and late evenings.
    Nice video, and much appreciated. Getting up off the wet sand gets tougher every year, so I recognized those noises. 😀

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      😅 I make more of those noises all the time!! 😂 You are correct - this is NOT and early morning, late evening or even a cloudy day lens - it is a full sun lens. That is one of the limitations of this lens. It has an amazing zoom and I love that. It is also light compared to the 600 F4. However, at a distance of 800mm, F9, F11..... the compression is amazing. Sometimes with the 600 F4 and the 1.4 extender, the f5.6 I am shooting at is TOO shallow so I push it up to an 8 or 9 anyway. But that is how I shoot. Now - a 24-70 - different lens for a different use. I want at least a 2.8 and would not shoot an F4 with that lens or the 70-200 - I want F2.8. Both different lenses for different uses so as far as that goes, I would not compare the two. A while back I rented the 800 F11 after poopooing it as an f11 for long time. I was blown away and I bought one. I knew the limitations and still printed some poster with it. I am no longer afraid of the F9, F10, F11. That is an old school way of thinking that does not quite translate to the newer mirrorless bodies. My old D800 - I will not shoot above 400 ISO but the new bodies - 6000, 8000 ISO no problem and still really clean shots. 🙏💖🤗

      @RockPolitics 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JonnyPink65 LOL. I think you missed the point. Make every setting the same - aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. It doesn't matter what the focal length is, you need the same amount of light. F/9 is F/9 is F/9. There are lots of times and reasons to stop down to F/9 or F/11 intentionally. But when you do that, there's on thing I know - you either have enough light to do so, or you're underexposed. That's not an old school way of thinking, it's basic optics.
      I've been doing this for almost 40 years, so I'm pretty sure I understand that 24-70 and 200-800 are different lenses for different uses. I sell prints - mostly birds and landscapes. My clents are more and more looking for large-format prints. I go where client demand takes me. But I can tell you that for larger prints, especially, 8,000 ISO is rarely "clean" to the extent I require, even after noise reduction. If you're an amateur looking for a nice 8x10 pitcher to show your friends? It's fine.
      Carry on.

      @JonnyPink65  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RockPolitics I meant no disrespect. I just think the way we thought about cameras with film, then digital DSLR and now mirrorless - with each change, some of the thinking has and had to change with it. We are not buying film and picking an ISO, or a color film, or size. We can take limitless photos and it does not cost other than the card we use. If I shoot a DSLR like my favorite D800 (the best camera ever made in my opinion for me), I dont let the ISO go over 400 - anything past that is crap. The sensor just cant handle it. But with the improvements in software and hardware - I think differently about higher ISO. I think it was last year that I printed a couple of posters (24X36) of some owls that I shot with the 800 F11 and my 600 F4 and extender giving me 840mm. Granted a lot of what I shot is experience, but I would challenge any one to tell the difference. Another thing for me is that I will push the aperture up to F8 for a little more depth of field at those longer focal lengths so F9 - F11 - to me, no big deal. I focus off to the side and get my shot with a compressed background that everyone looks for. Yes this is specialty lens geared I think more at those that just want to go out and have fun, have more reach and have something they can easily carry. I get that comment on Canon's RF 100-400 and for them it is the prefect lens - too slow for me at that shorter focal distance. This is a fancy entry level all arounder, but it can produce some amazing photos. And again, some of that is experience! Hay, anyone who buys this, or a 300, or a 100-400 and goes out to have fun..... win win win for getting out there to create! 🤗💖
