And a few years ago, 2019 or so, they joined up with Toyota, Honda, GMC, etc. to spend millions of dollars to make an ad campaign that basically said “allowing third-party repairs on our cars means you will be s3xu411y assaulted in a dark parking garage at night”. This is actually really common. As a repair technician in third-party repair I see Apple Watch screens coming off all the time. After about 2 to 4 year depending on usage the battery starts to expand and because everything is so tightly packed inside the watch the battery expanding, even just a millimeter is enough to pop the screen. Pair that with weakening, he said over the years and you get this. I see this at least once every few weeks.

I'd wager almost anyone could replace a Quartz movement's battery with some simple tools, but even for a tenner at Timpsons, it's such a good value. Yes, I don't get the software, but I traded that for a selection of unique, unusual and interesting timepieces that I can swap on the daily and keep going myself, or by hiring someone who can repair the watch for me (I'm never touching the Seiko 5 my grandfather left me! I still have my 4 but it was great! The battery life of course degraded and with the new updates, it would need a little charge during the day. It's still perfectly fine though! My used series 7 battery is still pretty good and it lasts a whole night and day. I usually sleep around 6+ hours with it on and when I charge it usually before midnight, it has about 30-35 percent left.
One thing I will note is on my series 7, my battery life depends on the watch face and complications I use. I currently use the California watch face with a rectangle dial with the date and weather temp complications, but if I use the Metropolitan face with the same date and weather temp complications, the Metropolitan face uses about 7-10 more battery percentage. I still use an Apple Watch 4, it’s working perfectly, obviously I can’t do much more than a marathon with it on but for day to day it’s fine. I had my iPhone XS Max for 5 years before upgrading. I used the same MacBook Pro for around 4 years and I bought it when it was 3 years old. I find, on the whole, that if you look after your Apple products they last a long time. I even give my old devices to my kids and they get years out of them after.

I ran into a similar airpod issue because my dog ate one of the buds. They said they couldn't just replace the buds but instead they had to take the case and the other good airpod. Baffles me and frustrating because the applecare covers the apple store handing me a new boxed set sold in their stores. Instead I had to wait weeks watching my case go around the U.S. using find my apple.

both mine and my mother's series 6 saw their screen came off within about 2 months of this videos release (before and after). It really feels like Apple set a timer on those adhesives!
I opted to do a self repair - granted, with an somewhat unnecessary step of attempting and failing to remove the screen, which seems to have botched the light sensor connections for now - with a battery removal, but my mom thinks the battery life is fine and opted to just glue it back together. I have a series 7, and I have to echo your experience regarding battery performance and software updates. My battery health was down to 87% about few months before the applecare was due to run out, so I went out of my way to try and drop that % below 80 to have the replacement fee covered by the applecare. I was unable to do so running the flashlight (dropped quickly down to 83% and hasn’t changed in months). But now, the battery performance seems to fluctuate quite a bit. Some days it gets me through all day and night like it was brand new. Other days i feel like i can see the charge decreasing in front of my eyes. Either way, when it is time to upgrade, I will probably go for the current Ultra model. My series 7 was the stainless steel, which, over 2 years ago, costs the same as the Ultra 2 does now. Except the Ultra 2 is significantly more watch for the same money. Not too worried about the size increase either.

Currently got a Series 3 which I acquired Christmas 2019 (when the current model was the Series 5), the battery health is still at 94%, but given the software is maxed-out at watchOS 8.8.1 - presently two major versions out of date - & the fitness tracking seems to be getting flakier as time goes on, I am planning on replacing it come September; either with a Series 10 (Series X?) or a Series 9 once the price drops after the next model comes out if it doesn’t seem like a worthwhile enough upgrade to pay the full £429 (assuming the top end price doesn’t go up this year).

I recently upgraded my series 5 to an Ultra 2 so I could give the 5 as a hand-me-down to my daughter, since her Gabb watch experiment didn't really work out. The 5, even though it's sitting at 81% battery, still holds a charge long enough for her to get through a 12 hour day, and that's with it entirely on cellular connectivity since it's using the Apple family sharing plan and connected to my phone.
I got 3 years of life out of my 5 (I bought it secondhand when the 6 came out) and since I bought the U2 brand new, I'm hopeful to get at least that, and hopefully a full 5 years or more of life from it. When the 5 finally dies, I'll likely replace it with a series 9 since it does sport the much newer SoC architecture.

Just a little heads up, the double tap gesture is not exclusive to the new Apple Watches, I have been using it regularly on my Apple Watch SE 2023 for a good while now. It can be found in Accessibility settings and works nearly perfectly, there have been some times it wouldn't register the taps when my milanese loop had come a little bit loose, but I don't think that is a problem with other bands as they don't tend to get loose.

  • @zants_

This exact thing happened to my Fitbit Versa Lite a few months ago. Eventually the screen must've shorted or something (maybe from water getting in while washing my hands), causing the screen to go black, and so I superglued the screen on so it wouldn't break any more than that. So for the last few months I essentiall have a bracelet instead of a watch that tracks my health info without any interactable screen for me to get distracted by notifications or anything.
It's funny because I intentionally went with the "dumber" watch by getting what I did instead of an Apple Watch because I knew I'd get distracted by more features, so it's been a cool experience of seeing what it's like to have even less to interact with.

3 days after the 1 year warranty expired, the screen came off.
Took it at an Apple Store and they don’t fix watches as the video stated, they ended up replacing it free of charge since this problem started before the warranty expired.
I’m very careful with my things, the watch was in out of the box condition, not a single mark. The adhesive strip gave up just like in the video. I also think it might be due to alcohol hand sanitizer.
Just in case, bought a few 3M screen adhesive strips

Am I the only one that still uses the gen 1 Apple Watch? Still works like a charm, mainly only use the watch for notification alerts, as I usually have my phone silenced and having a slight vibration in the wrist to let me know is very comfortable, and as a plain old watch. Still works like a charm for that use case + it can do a bunch more if need be. Only downside I would say is battery life but It lasts me a whole day, so when with accustomed to a regular charging routine during each night there are no issues.

I was in a similar situation. Watch6 was in great condition but the battery was kinda bleh. It'd cost me $100 to replace it, but at the same time, Apple was giving me $150 to trade it in which I feel like is way more than I'd expect. Ended up picking a 9 at Costco for $360 and traded in the 6 at Apple. I think the sweet spot for trade in value is about 3 years and now I'm set for another.3 years of support. Also, the detailed find my phone with iPhone 15 has been incredibly useful to my forgetful mind.

Until recently I had a S6 44mm too, but its battery had dropped to like 83%. I also wasn't a fan that I had to charge it every night, because it couldn't survive more than 30h, and I wear it in bed for the silent alarms and sleep tracking. Recently I traded it in and got an Ultra 2, which I basically charge twice a week, and I'm quite happy with it. My only gripe is that the milanese loop band, which is by far my favourite due to the precise adjustment, looks hilariously disproportionate on the Ultra watch. I've been making due with the velcro Ultra 2 strap (can't remember its proper name), but I don't find it as convenient and nice looking as the milanese.

This exact thing happened a couple of weeks ago with my Series 6. I noticed the additional "tap" for 3-4 weeks, and then found the screen fully hanging off one evening. The local Apple Store wanted £299 to fix it, and third-party Apple authorised places didn't have any prices listed on their websites - except for one, KRCS. £369.
I tried to fix it myself, but I was ultimately unsatisfied and not confident it would stay in one piece - so I ended up buying a Series 9 due to some discounts.
Normally I wouldn't comment, but the timing is... yeah.

I still have a series 4, battery is still around 80%. No reason to upgrade. However, I cracked the screen on it by accident. Looked into a replacement on iFixIt and via Apple directly and both were around £200, which just doesn't seem cost effective. I can still use it and it works fine, its just obviously not water resistant anymore. I'm having the same debate whether to upgrade it or not. At this point I'll probably just wait and see what they do with the series 10 given all the rumours around it being a large change, like the iPhone X was.

  • @zukaro

I think it's most likely the battery swelling that caused the adhesive to fail. I had a similar thing happen on my Sony Xperia a number of years ago (though I've had better luck with all my other devices).
Though, I really wish things were screwed down instead of glued together (of course I wonder if gluing it together is safer in cases where the battery expands). In any case, I'd much prefer something that has no glue at all and is just screwed together (in such a way that battery swaps can be done by the user).
In general, I vastly prefer hardware and software that's actually designed to last. I prefer the idea of being able to use the same device forever if I so choose.

I am happy with my series 6, but I have noticed that the previous/next buttons seem to be less responsive after the last few updates. Maybe it's just me, or the screen protector that I've had on for a year, but I hope it isn't about to suffer a similar fate. I also notice that the sound levels between individual mp3s is worse than usual, like some songs are twice as loud as others. This wasn't the case earlier on, I know because I have been using the same gym playlist for years.
I don't really want to upgrade, I'd rather keep this one going. The only compelling upgrade to me is cellular connectivity so I can leave my phone at home more often. Eh.
