@@numnumb5969 When the weather gets warm keep an eye out for people riding motorcycles with no helmet and no windscreen. They usually have sunglasses on, and those sunglasses don't end up on the side of the road, they stay on their faces right where they're supposed to be.

For anyone who hasn't experienced desert heat in this part of the country, I cannot overstate how insane this man is to drive through the desert in an overheating vehicle with no A/C and no doors
Yeah that heat is no joke down there. Add the heat off of the motor and he would be cooking.
And don't forget that he's obese as hell.
I work on these here in kansas on Fort Riley, that looks like a M1097. They are notorious for overheating! It's always the fan clutch solenoid, time delay or the fan clutch itself. If you unplug the time delay the fan clutch should kick on if not your fan clutch is seized, if it is there's 6 screws on the back of it loosen them and tap around the fan clutch and sometimes it'll spring out then tighten the screws back up. It should kick on at about 180 degreese.

Man, I used to drive these in the Army. Driving one on the highway makes you feel like a badass, but going down the highway in the gunner turret sitting behind an M2 makes you feel like King Big Dick.

Unplug the fan clutch solenoid so the engine fan is always on. Literally how we made one last a whole NTC rotation with the overheating problem

Yep, it makes the actuator/fan run constantly. Fuel mileage sucks…worse than normal, but it will save the motor.

We did talk about "field-wise repairs" when I was in the Swedish army. That windshield and roof looks right on spot for that definition.
Next to the coolant expansion tank is a plug. If you unplug it the radiator fan runs constantly. If you have an MRE box you can totally use the cardboard as a temporary thermostat gasket.

I spent 6yrs in the USMC in a heavy machine gun platoon, we had the hard top humvee's, I don't know how they designed them, all the heat from the engine comes right in to the passenger compartment, you can cook a can of soup on the engine block though.
I work on these for a living. Unplug the relay for the fan. Will help the overheating problem. Also the driveline rubbing is caused by the body mount bushings being wore out or gone.
After you unplug it do you just leave it unplugged or do you jump it out so it runs all the time?

They spend their life operated by man children. Trust me I know. I used to test the new ones my unit received. New they’re great. After years of abuse and neglect. Not so much. These things are literally driven like they’re stolen constantly.

When I was long haul trucking i never once seen a military convoy without at least one broken down humvee. usually there were a couple.

I did 75 mph in one of those things before, and it felt like the shuttle re-entering the earths atmosphere. In it's defense, it had gone through combat. It was pretty worn out.
The only way those things get to 75 mph is if you drop them out of a plane.

I appreciate this video so much. After active duty, I spent time as our CO's driver while in the Reserves. I drove a humvee - it did have a windshield and, technically it had door (the fabric kind that have zip up windows). One summer we had to take the company of fuel tanker trucks from Traverse City, MI to Omaha, NE (800mi or so). The company left in three platoons separated by 15 minutes. The CO wanted to drive between them, so we had to catch up from time to time with different platoons. That meant driving over 70mph for the first 2 hours of the trip. We ran out of gas before we had gone 200 miles. Additionally, because there was no AC, we ran with the window unzipped and my short-sleeved arm hanging out the window. When we got to Omaha my left arm was so badly burned it took weeks to get back to normal.
Anyway - driving a Humvee is fun in little bursts. Not as fun as a tank - but fun none the less. If you're going over 100 miles though, hitch a ride on a blackhawk.
I just drove from los angeles to dover south carolina to take my friend his harley, then i drove to alabama to help with the hurricane and just now getting back home.. 6,160 miles in 7 days.. that was the craziest thing I’ve ever done.. highway 40 is washed out in Tennessee, the roads in Tennessee are probably the worse roads in this country.. thought i snapped an axle on my trailer.. ended up being a broken leaf spring shackle bolt.. sheared right off.. took 70 cases of bottled water and canned foods down there. I hope it helps

2:52 unplug the time delay module (little flat box with plugs next to the washer reservoir) the fan will stay on your gas mileage will suck even more but it won't overheat. I spent six years working on Humvees for a contractor on Ft Polk and we had to do that hack more than once on our own recovery trucks

Hell of a trip for a HMMV dude, if you can imagine also wearing long sleeve uniforms and pants, over 25lb. of kevlar and hard plates and a helmet-- then our ammo and equipment to bulk on top of that, then you'd have a little more of an idea of how miserable these beasts are when we were on deployments haha. Drink water! Enjoy the 50mph steed of greatness my dude.

I served for 6 years and spent 5 of those in a hummer lol, worst vehicle I’ve ever driven. It has 0 space inside, like a reverse TARDIS. It falls apart sitting still, you are a true hero driving this thing that far.

Some of the newer thermostat sensors let these things run at 230°. But unplugging the fan clutch solenoid would help keep the running temp down
As a 3531 motor transportation op former USMC I can confirm that’s exactly how a basic day in the life is for us driving in the CA dessert I’m impressed it didn’t blow up on the way to LV 🤣

HumVee's can fly, I saw one fly, it was in Iraq, being pulled by another HumVee, second HumVee broke lose, went down the road, hit a big pile of dirt, HumVee flew quite nicely, bounced several times, didn't tip over, 1st HumVee can back reconnected, disappeared into the night.
Over riding the fan clutch is an easy thing to do. That’s how we used to keep them from over heating

Open hood drivers side wendshield washer tank is a wire harness plug fan clutch over ride ,we used to do that in Iraq to keep them from running too hot and stay at convoy speed, fun clutch cutting on and off speed drops down to 55-58 clutch on when it turns off takes about two miles to get back to 70mph just after that fan clutch back on, unplug it we could stay at convoy speed 70mph.

Back in the mid-80's I lived in South Bend, IN. They made these in Mishawaka, IN (city just to the east) and drove the finished vehicles on US Highway 20 from the assembly plant out to the holding and testing grounds on the west side of South Bend. These mini-convoys of Hummers had no windshields...just like this one. The drivers were always wearing helmets with visors...which is what I thought Westen may do.

Better than getting your bus endorsement. I had the humble, 5. Ton, Deuce, Lmtv and Fmtv. I was able to avoid the bus
@@IraqVet0608 Guys in my shop always said they'd take the bus license over 7ton or Humvee. Their logic was they could get into anything a bus license covered for work if they were in a rut outside the Corps
@@ezioahmet4192 that’s good thinking- we avoided the buses cause ours were slower than the humvees. The lmtv/fmtv was the endorsement to get. You could actually drive with traffic (don’t tell the CO) and most had AC
