Daihatsu Hijet sudah sejak lama terkenal dikalangan orang Indonesia sebagai transportasi murah meriah. Daihatsu Hijet pertama kali muncul di Indonesia pada Agustus tahun 1973. Mobil ini menjadi mobil pickup pertama Astra Daihatsu setelah Astra mulai berdiri pada tahun 1973. Di Jepang, Daihatsu Hijet dibuat untuk menggantikan Daihatsu Midget atau Bemo yang masih memakai 3 roda. Mobil ini memiliki beberapa julukan yang berbeda tiap daerahnya. Ada yang menyebut Daihatsu Hijet ini dengan nama Hijet Tuyul, Hijet Unyil, Hijet Truntung sampai Hijet Cetol.
