      The best part is later Braun said, basically, "I was in the right spot for our defense. But Jokic instantly saw that we needed to adjust." That is, he wasn't correcting a CB error; he just saw what needed to change and did it on the fly. Jokic is on another level.

      Late 80s maybe. If you’ve been watching since the early/mid 80s you’d know that Joker and Larry Bird have very similar court vision, passing styles, and ability to read defenses. Bird was a better shooter and rebounder (when healthy). They have different body types though and Joker is much more powerful, so he can create offense on his own in ways that Bird could not.

    • @PhilDavisplus
      @PhilDavisplus หลายเดือนก่อน

      @JG-zs8tr, have you noticed Jokic doesn't jump high? He doesn't need to; he has long arms and super strong mitts. The jumping part is where injury happens most. So, this is one reason Jokic stays healthy.

    That's why Jokic is an underrated team defender and elite at drop coverage defense. He was ranked 5th in total deflections in the 2023-2024 season. His biggest weakness on the defensive end is his "rim protection", but that's why the signing of AG has helped mitigate that weakness.

      This is the basic thing they teach you in Europe, reading the floor and knowing when to stop the action with the foul. If you watch Euroleague games or Serbia at the Olympics for example, nearly every single foul is preventing a transition play or if a player gambles and loses or gets beat and they don't want to give up the advantage. This is a very underrated part of basketball and difficult to see when watching, but if you pay attention to that sort of thing you will notice when players are elite at reading the game like Jokić is

      His long strides make him deceivingly fast and even on his pump fake dribble drives he looks slow but somehow uses decels to his advantage kind of like what luka does. It looks so unorthodox and yet he creates the same results as a guard that can stop and go in pnr. I know this was a video about his defense but that example still illustrates how elite his body control is at around 300 pounds.

    • @Cindoreye

      Conditioning and athleticism are not the same thing. Jokic has great conditioning. He's also a great athlete, though not in all aspects. His verticality and lateral quickness are weak by NBA standards, but his hand eye coordination and footwork are phenomenal, as is his vision. He's huge but knows where every limb is at all times. He's the opposite of the clumsy big guy.
      His strength is also very high, but that is more like conditioning than athleticism.

    Jokic is a great defender. People get fooled because he generally doesn't block shots at the rim in order to keep himself out of foul trouble. He could have big block numbers if he wanted, but the trade off is not worth it. He had a few years in the past where foul trouble would consistently mitigate his impact down the stretch of games. Now he consistently provides high level impact on both sides of the ball.

    • @Ugleseth
      @Ugleseth หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The block is one of the coolest things in basketball and blocking someone is an awesome feeling. Still, blocks is really a pointless stat. It says nothing about how the play ends. If you block a shot twice but the attacker makes the shot on the third try it means nothing. Contesting and boxing out doesn't show up on the boxscore.

    Saying "Jokic isn't a great defender' is like saying "Jokic isn't a great athlete"
    People are paying attention but don't know how to articulate what they are seeing - it's a prejudice.
    He is an AMAZING-all-time-great defender and an exquisite athlete. He sees everything and his body does what is required to adjust to what he sees. If he gets beat on a play it's because it's not humanly possible to be in five places at once

    I've seen people speak wonders about El Burro (Draymond) for stuff like this, playing defense with their minds and reading the court, if this was some other player in the West, the media would be glazing him like crazy every night, in fact, if this was Embiid playing off ball defense this way, they would be saying it's part of the argument for an MVP.
    I know Jokic is good, but i had norlt realized he is this good.

    The way he takes command of the defense reminds me so much of Luke Kuechly. They know when the play is gonna happen BEFORE it even starts lol. And they both may not be the most “athletic” on the floor/field, but they make up for it by being at the right place at the right time.
    The “jOkIc CaN’t PlAy DeFense! 🤓” narrative has to stop. I have never seen a player that gets his hands on the passing lanes so much, the other team is even afraid of swinging the ball sometimes because they know he’s lurking somewhere.

    1:58 is the money statement of the video. for us fans who can see the full court, it's different for the players who are running into each other in the court. the spacing are actually not hard to read from an outside prespective, but players cannot do it just because. that's why fans always think of themselves as smarter than players. in a sense, we are, but tough luck, we aren't the ones playing the game.

  • @nighthiker
    @nighthiker หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You were doing so well till you said "Jokic's not a great defender"... You almost got it, but in the end missed an important point you even made yourself. Sure, he's not the greatest stopper in isolation, but basketball is not an individual sport, man. There are plenty of explosive players with great vertical athleticism and quick feet that are great at stopping a drive in iso but are nevertheless poor team defenders because they get lost and out of position a lot. The thing is Jokic is as unorthodox on defense as he is on offense - people expect him to impact the game the same way other bigs do when defending, but he plays more like a guard, occupying passing lanes and contesting plays by being in the right spots. It's not a coincidence he's always among the leaders in deflections and also contested shots, even tough he's not a traditional rim protector - in the end, he is the core of the Nuggets defense, and his impact on the team's overall defensive rating is quite big, as pretty much all advanced defensive metrics show.
    Cheers,
    NH

    • @johnisgoodjohnisgreat5449
      @johnisgoodjohnisgreat5449 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Blocks have always been the dunks of defense imo and are always better for a highlight reel HOWEVER:
      Yes they both can necessary in the sense that something good happens when they’re successful.
      They can also both not be necessary in the sense that there are other ways to get a defensive stop (steal, forced turnover) or a score (layup, easy floater, pass to a teammate under the rim) that have the same impact on the game.
      Jokic not having a ton of blocks doesn’t equate to him being a bad defender at all. Clearly this cognitive ability that can force turnovers is where he makes up for his lack of blocks. It’s just that there’s no stat for cognitive ability to force a stop. But regarding stats he does have steals to show for something but we all know that individual basketball stats are not something Jokic cares about entirely. Blessing we have him in the league right now his IQ is beautiful to watch in action.
