The best part is later Braun said, basically, "I was in the right spot for our defense. But Jokic instantly saw that we needed to adjust." That is, he wasn't correcting a CB error; he just saw what needed to change and did it on the fly. Jokic is on another level.

Late 80s maybe. If you’ve been watching since the early/mid 80s you’d know that Joker and Larry Bird have very similar court vision, passing styles, and ability to read defenses. Bird was a better shooter and rebounder (when healthy). They have different body types though and Joker is much more powerful, so he can create offense on his own in ways that Bird could not.
@JG-zs8tr, have you noticed Jokic doesn't jump high? He doesn't need to; he has long arms and super strong mitts. The jumping part is where injury happens most. So, this is one reason Jokic stays healthy.
It’s very rare to have a basketball mind like Jokic on the court. LeBron, Rondo, Bird, Draymond, and CP3 are the only players I can think who do this. Maybe KG on defense?
This is why Jokic is always near the top of the league in stats like defensive win shares and +/-. We see him getting beat at the rim and on drives, but there's so much more nuance to defence that we miss as fans
his excellent conditioning and focus definitely help too. in some ways he's like a jumbo Larry bird, BBQ chicken in open space and not vertical but incredible hands and reading of the game.

That's why Jokic is an underrated team defender and elite at drop coverage defense. He was ranked 5th in total deflections in the 2023-2024 season. His biggest weakness on the defensive end is his "rim protection", but that's why the signing of AG has helped mitigate that weakness.
Bro stop he’s a slight plus defensively but definitely not elite by any means he almost exclusively plays with the starters which boost his metrics compared to other bigs like AD and Bam who play a ton with heavy bench lineups
@ in 2021-2024 jokic played most of his minutes along side kcp and AG which boosts his metrics. If you look at Murray’s metrics they’re significantly worse bc he plays with full bench lineups when jokic is off the floor. So jokics metrics are gonna say great defender when in reality he’s a plus but not elite
@ he’s not very good he has high iq rebounds well and hustles but any 1v1 situation or pnr he needs a lot of extra help but definitely a plus off his iq and rebounding alone
it's simple, Jokic commits fouls only on purpose. He sees the game quickly in his head and sees when it's worth defending and when not. And he gives priority to the attack, which is the purpose of playing basketball. He simply knows
Yeah, Joker is too important to his team's offense to get himself in foul trouble. He may give up some easy points, but he is responsible for so many more easy points on the other end.
This is the basic thing they teach you in Europe, reading the floor and knowing when to stop the action with the foul. If you watch Euroleague games or Serbia at the Olympics for example, nearly every single foul is preventing a transition play or if a player gambles and loses or gets beat and they don't want to give up the advantage. This is a very underrated part of basketball and difficult to see when watching, but if you pay attention to that sort of thing you will notice when players are elite at reading the game like Jokić is
That’s so true. Compare him to Anthony Edwards and he doesn’t “look” like an elite athlete but dudes literally running with the wolves on a nightly basis
His long strides make him deceivingly fast and even on his pump fake dribble drives he looks slow but somehow uses decels to his advantage kind of like what luka does. It looks so unorthodox and yet he creates the same results as a guard that can stop and go in pnr. I know this was a video about his defense but that example still illustrates how elite his body control is at around 300 pounds.
Conditioning and athleticism are not the same thing. Jokic has great conditioning. He's also a great athlete, though not in all aspects. His verticality and lateral quickness are weak by NBA standards, but his hand eye coordination and footwork are phenomenal, as is his vision. He's huge but knows where every limb is at all times. He's the opposite of the clumsy big guy. His strength is also very high, but that is more like conditioning than athleticism.
This isn't an snarky attack towards you, but to anyone who thinks he's not athletic (or fast) you're wrong, because if you're in the NBA, you're athletic.

Jokic is a great defender. People get fooled because he generally doesn't block shots at the rim in order to keep himself out of foul trouble. He could have big block numbers if he wanted, but the trade off is not worth it. He had a few years in the past where foul trouble would consistently mitigate his impact down the stretch of games. Now he consistently provides high level impact on both sides of the ball.
The block is one of the coolest things in basketball and blocking someone is an awesome feeling. Still, blocks is really a pointless stat. It says nothing about how the play ends. If you block a shot twice but the attacker makes the shot on the third try it means nothing. Contesting and boxing out doesn't show up on the boxscore.

Joker is the reason that Westbrook is now a Denver Nugget. His basketball IQ extends even to off the court things. I have no doubt that this front office & coaching staff consult with him on player personnel moves. I think that can be seen in how they draft as well. This guy is the true MVP of the NBA every year until he decides to retire...hopefully way into the future.
People still talking about Jokić not being good defender. The dude just has to stay out of foul trouble at all cost, since nuggets are doomed without him on the floor. Nikola is just smart.

I remember Khris Middleton doing the exact same thing vs Mavs 2 years ago on the final play of the game. Khris see's what the play is that Mavs are about to run he tells Jrue whats up knowing the play Khris started it covering Luka for a switch to Jrue. Luka see's that Khris and Jrue know what they are running and tries to get Kidd and change the play but they aren't paying him any attention. Mavs inbound the ball and sure enough Bucks were ready and Khris switches on the pick to Jrue and Luka is forced to take a contested fadeaway 3pt shot that never has a shot. Luka was so pissed he just stormed off to the locker room after he missed the shot. If you'd like to see the play just search for "Luka Was Mad The Bucks Knew The Mavericks Play". Khris has underrated BB IQ.
It’s taken awhile for folks to recognize it but Jokic is actually a strong defender. He used to be looked at as a bad defender, the then progressed to being viewed as an average defender. Now, for all the points you very astutely point out, and when you really hone in on how he operates on that side of the floor, you start to see that he’s actually a strong defensive anchor (though one who struggles with 1 - point of attack when switched onto guards and 2 - rim protection.
I think it's time to stop calling him "probably the best passer in the league" when he is de facto the best passer in the league (for quite some time now)
The most important aspect of defense is being in the right position. Paolo Maldini said it best: "If I have to make a tackle, then I've already made a mistake"
Saying "Jokic isn't a great defender' is like saying "Jokic isn't a great athlete" People are paying attention but don't know how to articulate what they are seeing - it's a prejudice. He is an AMAZING-all-time-great defender and an exquisite athlete. He sees everything and his body does what is required to adjust to what he sees. If he gets beat on a play it's because it's not humanly possible to be in five places at once
I've seen people speak wonders about El Burro (Draymond) for stuff like this, playing defense with their minds and reading the court, if this was some other player in the West, the media would be glazing him like crazy every night, in fact, if this was Embiid playing off ball defense this way, they would be saying it's part of the argument for an MVP. I know Jokic is good, but i had norlt realized he is this good.
The way he takes command of the defense reminds me so much of Luke Kuechly. They know when the play is gonna happen BEFORE it even starts lol. And they both may not be the most “athletic” on the floor/field, but they make up for it by being at the right place at the right time. The “jOkIc CaN’t PlAy DeFense! 🤓” narrative has to stop. I have never seen a player that gets his hands on the passing lanes so much, the other team is even afraid of swinging the ball sometimes because they know he’s lurking somewhere.
If Jokic was an elite NBA athlete in the sense of speed and verticality, he would be an elite defender simply because of his game IQ allows him to be where he needs to be.
To say he isn’t a good defender is criminal. Everyone including yourself assume since he doesn’t jump 40 feet on the air he’s a bad defender but tell me who has better hands for a big man? Dude is a stealing and deflecting machine.
Christian braun said jokic will text him sometimes when he watching other teams games and Jokic will say see what they did. So just proves jokic watches basketball.
You will hardly find a Serb who does not like basketball. We normally have a strong sports culture, where victory and team play are everything... Nikola loves basketball, I'll give you that. Watch some video about basketball in Serbia and you will understand :)
@vladomachar6365 makes sense sin e yugoslavia was a communist place like Russia and they exploit sports to try to prove they better than the west. Well yugoslavia never did this russia did tho. But I'm aware Communist yugoslavia had relationship with the west and didn't let Stalin tell them what they can and can't do. It's a damn shame yall could not get along with one another because a yugoslavia and usa rivalry in olympicswould of been epic
Bird was a legit 6'10" and one of the best shooters and passers ever (easily the best forward ever at both). He reminds me alot of Bird minus a few things.
1:58 is the money statement of the video. for us fans who can see the full court, it's different for the players who are running into each other in the court. the spacing are actually not hard to read from an outside prespective, but players cannot do it just because. that's why fans always think of themselves as smarter than players. in a sense, we are, but tough luck, we aren't the ones playing the game.
You were doing so well till you said "Jokic's not a great defender"... You almost got it, but in the end missed an important point you even made yourself. Sure, he's not the greatest stopper in isolation, but basketball is not an individual sport, man. There are plenty of explosive players with great vertical athleticism and quick feet that are great at stopping a drive in iso but are nevertheless poor team defenders because they get lost and out of position a lot. The thing is Jokic is as unorthodox on defense as he is on offense - people expect him to impact the game the same way other bigs do when defending, but he plays more like a guard, occupying passing lanes and contesting plays by being in the right spots. It's not a coincidence he's always among the leaders in deflections and also contested shots, even tough he's not a traditional rim protector - in the end, he is the core of the Nuggets defense, and his impact on the team's overall defensive rating is quite big, as pretty much all advanced defensive metrics show. Cheers, NH

Blocks have always been the dunks of defense imo and are always better for a highlight reel HOWEVER: Yes they both can necessary in the sense that something good happens when they’re successful. They can also both not be necessary in the sense that there are other ways to get a defensive stop (steal, forced turnover) or a score (layup, easy floater, pass to a teammate under the rim) that have the same impact on the game. Jokic not having a ton of blocks doesn’t equate to him being a bad defender at all. Clearly this cognitive ability that can force turnovers is where he makes up for his lack of blocks. It’s just that there’s no stat for cognitive ability to force a stop. But regarding stats he does have steals to show for something but we all know that individual basketball stats are not something Jokic cares about entirely. Blessing we have him in the league right now his IQ is beautiful to watch in action.
No Jokic IS A GOOD defender because of his ability to read opposing offenses, this is what I can’t stand most when people say Curry is a bad defender too when in reality he understands opposing offenses as well and is always pointing and communicating with the rest of his team when to switch or not to and where you should be positioned while playing defense, Jokic does the same thing

Khris has underrated BB IQ.
or is it because Kidd coached the Bucks with Middleton on it. He knew Kidd.
Jokic: _“It’s easy to be a general after a war.”_
A true floor general.
He explained once, if they send two guys to guard me, I will pass, if they don't, I will score :) that is one impressive line.
Please do more!
@4:22 jokic is playing netball and basketball all while being a big!! This is insane
He's a basketball genius. I know hey may not but I hope he will consider coaching in the future
I love these short bursts of deep insight, you have really outdone yourself Coach Daniel!
How does it feel to be a teammate of Jokic then see these types of videos pop up
great vid my man
I think it's time to stop calling him "probably the best passer in the league" when he is de facto the best passer in the league (for quite some time now)
Bro I love ur vids!
a lot of people still don't realize that watching Jokic live is a privilege on par with Larry Bird, Michael Jordan.....
And this is called inteligence. 💫
The most important aspect of defense is being in the right position. Paolo Maldini said it best: "If I have to make a tackle, then I've already made a mistake"
This video did a really good job making me a believer
This man Joker is the man!!! Very very smart dude.
Saying "Jokic isn't a great defender' is like saying "Jokic isn't a great athlete"
People are paying attention but don't know how to articulate what they are seeing - it's a prejudice.
He is an AMAZING-all-time-great defender and an exquisite athlete. He sees everything and his body does what is required to adjust to what he sees. If he gets beat on a play it's because it's not humanly possible to be in five places at once
i like how he is concerned to win in this early season. it proves that he cares about basketball, and not only about horses
This video was amazing! Great job!
Could have been the most dangerous dinasty if he had the right players around him ❤
Jokic is the modern version of Bird. Both are slow but they help differently on defense
If Jokic was an elite NBA athlete in the sense of speed and verticality, he would be an elite defender simply because of his game IQ allows him to be where he needs to be.
don't wanna hear anyone say jokic not invested anymore
To say he isn’t a good defender is criminal. Everyone including yourself assume since he doesn’t jump 40 feet on the air he’s a bad defender but tell me who has better hands for a big man? Dude is a stealing and deflecting machine.
If Jokic and Curry could play together it's going to be an epic masterclass of IQ plays
Imagine having MVP and best coach in same time on floor, that’s Jokic
He's most likely MVP again this will age well
When you got teammates willing to cut it makes a huge difference.
Greatest player of the 20's by a mile
1:36 ... You bet cha! 😭😭😩😩
This dude would be a giant popovich when he retires
It's a damn shame yall could not get along with one another because a yugoslavia and usa rivalry in olympicswould of been epic
i know that joker was cooking rudy but damn i did not know it was this hard
Do Luka next🙏
Good content bud.
JOKIC Is better defender than half of NBA . Take a look at his steal and blocks .
Love the Joker! Real hooper.
Bird was a legit 6'10" and one of the best shooters and passers ever (easily the best forward ever at both). He reminds me alot of Bird minus a few things.
Congrats on showing his defense.
Cheers,
NH
Dude has the highest IQ since Kobe
better iq than kobe, not really close. kobe 482988485 time the physical attributes tho.
better IQ lol. if anything it's LBJ and arguably cp3.
@@kennydeschenes3390 can’t say. It was hard to beat a healthy Kobe. Even Lebron had to team up with 2 other franchise players in their prime to try to beat Kobe.
@@LargeDude2023 it wasnt iq tho, kobe wasnt even a great passer, he was ok at best. We gotta stop act like he is MJ cause he die, he was awesome, but cmon now.
@ Kobe led back 2 back chips with 1 other HOFer. C’mon bro ain’t nobody since Kobe did that.
Stats say Jokic is a great defender. Get over the blocks already.
Blocks have always been the dunks of defense imo and are always better for a highlight reel HOWEVER:
Yes they both can necessary in the sense that something good happens when they’re successful.
First comment and 51 seconds ago is crazy
That horrendous airball at the end caught me completely off guard 😂
And yeah, Jokic is unbelievable ❤️
Goat🎉
Fun to watch.
his defense is underrated.
Can you do a video on why the cavs are still undefeated?
No Jokic IS A GOOD defender because of his ability to read opposing offenses, this is what I can’t stand most when people say Curry is a bad defender too when in reality he understands opposing offenses as well and is always pointing and communicating with the rest of his team when to switch or not to and where you should be positioned while playing defense, Jokic does the same thing
My god the fact that we cannot put together a good roster behind jok pisses me off so much the man literally makes every player better. We’re nearing the point that anyone other than CB, AG or Jok can be traded. Jamals regressing hard and as of rn him and Mpj are not worth anywhere near the money they’re making and its fucjing us hard in the new luxury tax system. Russ get tf off my team, Jamal stop forcing shots, Mpj make some fucking shots, and FOR FUCK SAKES GET AN ACTUAL SHOOTER MAN. ITS 2024 HOW THE HELL CAN YOU NOT GET A SHOOTER IN A LEAGUE FULL OF SHOOTERS. WHY IS DEANDRE JORDAN TAKING UP A ROSTER SPOT WHY DOES JULIAN STRAWTHER NEVER SET HIS FUCKIN FEET BEFORE SHOOTING YOU ARE NOT STEPH CURRY MY BOY SET YOUR FUCKIN FEET. I experience nothing but pain watching my team actually accomplish something for the first time in my life and instantly within 2 seasons be in back to back overtime games with terrible teams.
the youngsters will gain experienceand make a difference. strawter, waston and cb are legit players. Hunter play with intensity, he might figure it out in the second half. all those guys are playing fast and with alot of energy. Thats what you need around a cerebral genius.
@@kennydeschenes3390 Strawter and Waston, ofc who doesnt know em 😂😂
When did you buy the nuggets foo.😂
@@borutaicho you are HiLaRIOuS
Unbelievabe court sense - seems to see five seconds ahead for all ten players.
Bird used to do this. He'd make up for his defensive deficiencies by understanding what the other team was trying to do. That, and playing an illegal zone defense.
1:35 "Jokic gets it to Westbrook, aaand.. he not surprisngly misses the layup." 🤣🤣🤣
