May Neil continue his overtime for a long time. Sad he has to sell, hope it goes to the right owner, beautiful property. Another enjoyable vlog, cheers from 🇨🇦
As an American who has never set foot in the UK and probably never will, I would absolutely chip in $25 to get you into this house. I know more about the canal system than I do about my home town thanks to you, I've donated to a couple of the charities you've highlighted on your channel as well. Just seems like you'd be a great fit for the house, you're in a great position to keep raising awareness about the system and you're a great speaker. I'd love a follow up with whoever does end up with the place if they agree to it.
Heck I'd throw you a fiver for this, you deserve a place like that for all the fantastic documentary and advocacy work you have done for the canals. I mean I'm here on the other side of the world and have literally nothing to do with that particular part of your history and culture, but you've got this Canadian trucker obsessed with going on a narrowboat holiday if I ever come visit the UK.
I'd be more than happy to send you five david!!! Say the word and it's as good as sent!!! Your definitely the kind of person their looking for to buy it!!
I love Neil's outlook to find a "custodian" for his love property. Thank you David for bringing us a slice of dream to live on the canal and thanks to the owners for inviting your viewers to have a look.
David over the years you have given so much to you fans. I feel quite certain that we could easily crowd-source all the funds you would need to become the new owner AND keep up yearly costs! You’d only have to have 1 annual party each year when we could come and camp out on your back lawn and celebrate your new vocation. NO ONE would be a more passionate steward of this property. All kidding aside, why not give this a go? What an amazing story this would make and just think how chuffed WE would all be if we could pull this off!! Let’s DO this! 💕
Neil is an amazing human being! Glad we had the opportunity to meet him. In all seriousness, I would gladly contribute money to your purchase of this house and I’m sure Neil and Helen would love to have you as the custodian of the home.
That the gentleman seller understands that he may have already passed his “expiration date” is a sweet reminder that my “expiration date” has been extended so many times. His evidence of gratitude is most humbling. I hope that every day will be most gentle for you and your bride. Thank you for sharing a portion of your day with all of us.
David, when I was listening to him talk, I thought to myself; “ Well, you’ve got the man sitting there interviewing you love!” David, I would be so happy if you became the caretaker of that lovely piece of canal history! I would love to donate towards that. I’m sure you could talk to him again and let him know you have our support, and that though it might take a little more time for your offer to come to fruition, it will be for the best for that lovely little property. Your vlogs are always such a calm quiet pleasure to watch. We, your lucky viewers, always learn something, if only how to relax for a few minutes. To us you are a treasure! It would swell our hearts to see you as caretaker of another treasure! You’re the very man!
I know you're not serious, but David, you WOULD seriously be the perfect owner/caretaker of such an incredible property. PS Thanks for making me drool all over myself!
I'm in for ten pounds (or whatever that is in American green) if we can get enough of us to make this happen. He wants someone who cares a lot about the canals, that's YOU! (-very- serious about this)
Dearest viewers! Please note I absolutely was joking about the “donations to buy” (as I thought I made clear). Apparently my flashing red text explaining this gets hidden behind the subtitles! It would be entirely impractical to actually buy the property for so many reasons, it would take an essay to explain. Your love for the idea is very much appreciated though. Thank you 😊 Neil and Hellen will surely find a suitable buyer soon. Regards, David
All joking aside though, you are the perfect person for this property and I know I'm not alone in that many of us would happily give a fiver or more for all the hours of entertainment you've given us down the years. Why don't you set up a go fund me? Regards from Greece.
I know you did the "Send me your money" as a tongue in cheek play, but honestly, for the amount of entertainment joy I have gotten out of your channel, I would be more then willing to toss in a few Loonie's (CDN $) if you decide to go for it. (Right now 5 British is $8.63 Canadian) And judging from lots of the other comments, many others would too. Don't be so modest, we love what you do. Let us show our appreciation and in the process get you a house second to none. The house would be in the best of hands and would pretty much fit the current owners criteria So why not ...
Neil is such a gentleman and kind spirit. I wish him all the best. If all people were like him the world would be such a different place. Thanks so much for bringing this to us.
And on behalf of the gamer community, Mr Ecclestone, congrats on the high score, and thanks for showing us the wonderful legacy you're leaving for the next player.
Do it David. Seriously do it. The majority of us would love to see you there. Barlaston is a lovely village close to the Potteries and not in it. My parents lived there after the war and before they moved to Canada. You would love it, your family and friends would as well. What's the point of having all the subscribers if we cant make it work and show our appreciation for what you have done. Ask Sheridan if they can wait until the funding is complete
If I may, I would absolutely recommend a kickstarter for this incredible property. If the kickstarter failed to reach its goal, then proceeds would go to a canal trust charity that would help educate and introduce new comers to the delights of the canals. Whether you can or can't afford it is besides the point... this is like asking the prettiest girl in school out, if you don't ask and don't try, you'll never know.
I'm an American and I'm just fascinated with the culture and society that has developed around these canals. It's also wonderful that there remains those who continue this tradition of maritime and bestows upon these canals the respect and care they deserve. Thank you for this wonderful video as it became my "Happy Place" for today.
Love the quirky yard decorations. Sorry that Neil is not well. Good luck to him. He appears to be going gracefully. Heh! My father in law was supposed to kick the bucket over 20 years ago, he is still here. The current owners have done a wonderful job of that house and land.
I am in Australia, but dream of taking a canal boat holiday, I would gladly kick in £20 in exchange for a cup of tea and a scone if I ever get to visit. Places like this deserve to be in good hands.
We own nothing we merely borrow it while we are alive. The owner is a wise person. When he is dead he will live on in the new owner. People will say this was restored and owned by. Well done vlog. Hope it helps find the correct buyer.
WHEN THE GENTLEMAN WAS DESCRIBING WHAT KIND OF PERSON HE WANTED TO SELL TO I WAS SCREAMING AT MY COMPUTER "HE'S DESCRIBING YOU DAVID!!! HE'S TALKING ABOUT YOU!!"
David. Back in the early days of Covid, I stumbled across your channel. Watched a couple of episodes and then I got hooked. Went way back to #1 and started watching: a little here, a little there. It was just what I needed: a pleasant guy, showing me around the English countryside, talked in complete sentences (That's a thing for me.), great sound, great video production, no yelling, no cussing--all in all, just what I needed during the crazy times of Covid. Eventually I ran out of Cursing the Cut videos but am always delighted when you post. Thanks for the simple gift of sanity. If you'd have been serious, my 5 bob would already be in your hands.
I've scrolled through the comments...so many people so excited to help you make your dream a reality. PLEASE let us all help, we need to share, it spreads joy and kindness. Great TED talk about impossible dreams, articulate the dream, identify the obstacles and accept help. People love to help! That house could be your home, no strings attached. Do it David, help us to help you, we ALL WIN x
Oh I wish him the best what a cheery man he is!! May he continue to have a great attitude and keep living overtime as long as he can my prayers are with him grate vlog!!! Beautiful home and whoever decorated Did a beautiful job it will sell in a heartbeat
This made me shed a few tears, what a lovely couple. A very sad situation 💜. I scrolled through the comments and it seems clear that we think you would be the ideal person for this home. It's time for you to make a pitch for what you would do with the property and set up a Go get funding or a Givesendgo account...Good luck 😊💜
That price is a good bargain from where we are in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. Canada. We're on the Trent canal system and a comparable estate to this one here would be 3 million pounds or 4-5 million CDN. Very nice home. To the home owner thanks for sharing. Cheers 🇨🇦
You would be the perfect person, so would Jim and I ! But unfortunately we could no way drum up the $$$ or leave our adopted land….Thank you for a superb vlog, and the gentleman who property you showed who need a medal for his care of the canal…….So well done to you both Thank you, it made our week 🙏✝️🕊🙏
In my neck of California, that property would sell tomorrow at an easy $8-10 million USD. God bless this man for bestowing back to history, the love and care he labored to recreate a point in time immemorial!
A property like this in a population centre like London would likely cost that much as well. The same is true in most European countries and say New Zealand, Australia and Canada as well.
I doubt people ignored the red qualification you posted with prominent and repetitious insistence David. I certainly did not and ordinarily courtesy would require that we all respect that! However as do I most of your followers probably feel it is a perfect retreat from the rigors of all that cruising and casting for you particularly in winter and not least due to considerable respect your civility elicits! After all you have amply demonstrated considerable passion for and empathy with the history of and life along and on the canals. In addition you have enthusiastically shared those admirable attributes with at least 96,000 of us via your dulcet tones and eloquent, gentlemanly ways. So if we all put up ten quid or so we could jolly well see you moved in and give you a 'new lease of wifi' in an idyllic setting as it were! I must admit a desire to encourage your continued casting on canal related subjects for as long as possible is a subjective factor and planting you right next to one must surely help in that regard!
I know, understand, and appreciate your hesitancy to “ask” for money from your viewers….but I promise, you’re not asking at this point. David, so many people on here appreciate you and the wealth of knowledge and experiences you’ve shared with us, and I think so many of these commenters (myself included) would love the opportunity to give back to you in some tangible way. Please just consider letting us do a little something for you!
@@richardczubkowski5111 Couple of things wrong here…..1) I already do subscribe and am a member of his Patreon and 2) Compared to the knowledge I did have prior to being introduced to these videos (which was completely non-existent) I have gained a wealth of knowledge. I, just like everybody else in this world, am a subject matter expert in very few fields and as a result highly value the expertise of and am interested in learning from other people in their respective arenas………….
What a beautiful property! I love that the owner is looking for someone "worthy" to carry on the upkeep of this estate! My wife is fascinated with the canals and narrow boats. I'm afraid to show her this post because she would be hopping on a plane to give her best pitch for ownership...:) So sorry to hear of your health trouble. I suppose we shall all get our turn eventually.
David, I don’t think you know how much you are loved, and how much joy your videos bring! Your videos, to me, are a visual / electronic version of, say, “The Wind in the Willows”, with a bit of “Treasure Island” (And many more bits!). I hope that you can see that you’ve been able to run away to the sea!!! As a result many of us would dearly love to see you in this house! We would love to contribute a little bit, each, to see you there! I believe that most crowdfunding services have a way of returning the funding if it doesn’t work out. Maybe make it a center for teaching new narrow boaters how to communicate their adventures! I’m sure that you could figure something else… Don’t be afraid of BHAGs!!! (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) While this is bigger, you have already proven that you can van meet and conquer them! We would LOVE to help!!!
Quite a sad situation but I admire his attitude to speeding boaters. Some hire boaters just dont realise how much damage wash can do and a few dont care sadly. Some lucky person with plenty of money is going to love living there. I have a feeling its almost as relaxing sitting in that garden on a warm summer evening as cruising can be.
How nice is that? He's more interested that his home goes to the best person rather than the richest. I wish you many more happy years with your family.
WOW, what a lovely home. David this really would be the home for you. To bad you said it was out of your price range, I could see you living there forsure. That shop is a work all on its own. Doesn't look like a shop should look. Shops are to be dirty with spider cobs..... lol..... just like mine is with all the dirty grease you can imagine. We couldn't get anymore tools or machines in this place even if we stacked them. It is a poor slightly mess, but we love it. Thank you for sharing this wonderful home. Just wished you could buy it & be it's care taker. Have a happy safe day, Chris from Missouri
David, for all the learning I have received from you and your obvious love of the canals you have so ably reported I would donate $1000.00 for you to purchase this lovely house and grounds. If you setup some kind of account please let me know.
I love the custodial attitude. I believe in that. We live in a 130 yr old house that we bought from the original family. Best of luck in finding that special person!
Mine is 122. We didn't get it from the original family, but they did own it for the first 100 years. I managed to track down some books by a priest who grew up in the house as the son of the original owner.
I have been watching Cruising the Cut on Amazon Prime for about 2-3 years now and have watched every episode and wow, I can see how it would be so very, very easy to fall in love with the Canals and Narrowboating in general. Thank you for allowing me to come along and witness the canals as, being in the U.S and getting up there in age (55) it is a dream that probably will not happen for me. Still, like thousands of us everyone, we have you to think good sir. I hope Cruising the Cut continues for many, many moons!! Best wishes to Neil who seems like a wonderful gent and I hope he has lots and lots of overtime left!!!
House costs $1,252,177.12 USD at today exchange rate. Divide that by 208K Subscribers and that would only be a $6.03 USD donation per viewer! Not everyone would donate...but most would be willing to donate a great deal more than $6.03! Life is not a dress rehearsal! Take a swing at it... chances like this come once in a lifetime! You have proven the river life is for you, and this would naturally be the next leg in the journey!
My mum and I walk our dogs past this place often, and have always wondered what it was like and whether or not the Dock was actually old.. Now we do! So sad to hear the current owner needs to sell up. Hope he is able to carry on for a good while yet. We are all custodians of our properties and some time or another we have to pass them on the to next, who will cherish it just as much.
The man that you interviewed seems like a terrific person. Your interview was intelligent, warm, interesting, and many other positive adjectives. As we learned more about your new friend, I could not help but wish the man as many healthy years as God is willing to offer he and his wife. Thank you for a great educational opportunity.
An unbelievable piece of history!!! Absolutely beautiful setting and very peaceful. I can see why he has beat the odds that doctors gave him. Zero stress and a placid environment add to one’s longevity.
form a consortium! and buy it as a narrowboat non profit wayfarers charity or club, or to keep for posterity - slight tongue in cheek but a viable option. What a great piece of property and location. Sincerely hope these generous and caring owners get the type of buyer they desire. I'm so glad you made this vlog, thanks for the tour.
Gosh Neil your home is absolutely beautiful! I too, am moving after 26 yrs in my home (in the US) but I love love love you & Helen's taste in every single room that was photographed. The stove and built in kitchen seating, the office with all the built-in's (I have a library in my home) and I have always been into the nautical theme and display many of the same pieces as you. My last home was on the water but once children came, more space was necessary. My aunt came to the US in 1966 from Glasgow and I have had a love of the UK since. I wish you more years of "borrowed time" with good health. You & Helen have created a masterpiece.
That is one of the most stunning properties I've ever seen and I love the way that the gentleman said that he and his wife are merely custodians. I really hope that his "overtime" continues for many more years.
Here is wishing Neil many decades of “overtime”. And his description of the next owner fits David to a tee. As I understand it, this is the very definition of what crowd funding is meant for.?…paying it forward so that someone is able to continue doing great things. I have absolutely no idea how to set such a thing up…..but, if it gets started, I’m in for $100 USD…..who’s with me ?
Hahaha, we all know that David would never wish to feel so indebted to us viewers (wisely, so). He might feel compelled to open up the estate to visitors if they had helped to make the purchase. Obviously, his privacy is worth more than a million dollar canal estate ;) But it is beautiful, isn't it?
@@x--. I for one would feel no entitlement to even visit without a direct invite. 🧐 Down here in Texas, this is simply what friends do for each other…..😊
Seriously, David, who amongst us does not think you would be the perfect person for the property. Host “guest” boats for future episodes, and we all get to enjoy the views for that idyllic house and location. All the best to Neil and Helen.
@@CruisingTheCut David, I do believe you when you said you were joking, and not to send money. However, I also believe that all of us watching the video were coming to our conclusion way ahead of time. We enjoy your videos and the peace and tranquility they can bring. It is my conjecture that this is seen as an investment in our continued enjoyment of your videos.
So impressed that they're looking for the right buyer to continue being a custodian, not the wealthiest. I started drooling at the workshops, I must admit. Wonderful home, wonderful location, and I hope Neil gets many more years to enjoy the canals!
That is the most positive and touching way I’ve ever heard anyone talk about their imminent demise. I’m sure this video will quickly match the right buyer with that incredible couple.
Lovely place! Private moorings are the peak of human living. In the archipelago of Stockholm, where I live, there are alot of places with private moorings. No need to go to the marina, just go outside and into the boat. Perfection.
Judging from the comments.. please don't wait for viewers to take the initiative. Start fund your house project. I am sure quite a few of us are more than happy to chip in. I get you are too modest to ask. But we have been watching your videos. The house will provide more content. And this way it will go to a person we know and like. And through whom we can live vicariously XD. So basically, you will be doing us a favour. What better way to honour the current owner's wishes. The house will be the home of someone who educates people on the joy and proper use of the cut.
Neil seems like a lovely chap who's done fantastic work restoring the the property. Touching that they are staying true to their roots so to speak and trying to sell the property to someone who will appreciate it as much as they have. Very sad that Neil is unwell but I sincerely hope he gets to see this sale through, safe in the knowledge that his legacy will be looked after for years to come.
WOW David.....YOU are the perfect person to buy this beautiful canal home! Enjoyed watching this video as I do all you interesting videos....Claudie from Texas
Outstanding house, section, and personal morring, truly breathtaking. For me, being the 'CUSTODIAN' as he put it, was EXACTLY as it should be said. He and his wife were meant to buy 26 yrs back, extend and enhance, to find the original dry dock....OUTSTANDING. I wish you both the best in your upcoming future even if borrowed here and there, but an amazing bloke who will pass on his cottage to the NEXT CUSTODIAL PERSON. love the quirky art pieces and so vision the odd GNT ON THE SWING CHAIR LAPPING UP THE SUMMER NIGHTS. fantastic doco and a fantastic couple who brought the cottage alive!!!!!!
My first response was..."ONLY a million?" Seriously, what a bargain! A nearly unrepeatable opportunity. I'm sure that adding a dock like this would cost a lot of money, and reams of paperwork, if you could even get permission. It's not often I get envious about a house, but this one? Yeah, colour me green.
Thank you David. What a truly nice and considerate man. I hope he and his missus can find someone who will appreciate this beautiful property overlooking the serenity of the canal and care for it as they have.
Hugs for Neil, and if I could I'd love to send you the whole money to buy the dream home. Unfortunately I am neither royalty, nor a prince in exile with chests of gold so I send you what I can, hope and wishes that you may someday get this place and I'll visit the workshop when you do. DIY'er here. Honestly 5 pounds is not a big deal from all of us. It would be a lovely thing.
By far my favorite TH-cam video of the year! A great combo of escape to the country, location, location, location, and cruising the cut! I watch every Escape & Location show I can get my American watching hands on. There is just something special that tradional English homes seem to have that seem welcoming or to use the British term homely. Maybe it's the cooker or the fire or just combination of things but this home has it in spades. Thank you, David, for sharing and doing your usual fabulous job of telling the story. Our TH-cam world was BBC loss & our gain. I like all the others would love to see you become the worthy custodian of this fantastic home and would certainly be will to add 5£ or more to see it happen. 👍😊
So many homes, boats and motorhomes sold with health reasons cited. I am glad Neil enjoyed the place for a long time. For everyone else don't put off your dreams....
A lovely lovely uplifting video what a joy. Neil the owner is just a gentleman and a treasure someone who cares as he prepares to handover a beautiful home to the next family.
Dear viewers, please note that I *was* joking about the appeal for funds to buy it. The property has now sold.
Well i was just wondering if they had sold it, thanks for the update, it's a shame it wasn't to you though! I hope both of the owners are still well.
second time i watch this video. I love this house.
What a shame you did not get it.
Awwww!
😭😭😭😭
Thanks for mentioning that it is back on the market David! Sadly the original buyers were unable to proceed.
May Neil continue his overtime for a long time. Sad he has to sell, hope it goes to the right owner, beautiful property. Another enjoyable vlog, cheers from 🇨🇦
I was come here to say the same thing.
If I was a millionaire I'd buy it for Dave.
Hear! hear! Nice words.
Absolutely well said
David! Don't be surprised by how many of us would be happy to chip in for you!! It's perfect.
Can I just say how happy I am that you were allowed to film around, and even interview Neil! This is documenting history.
Thanks Neil!

Ah you did make it clear, hope my comment hasn’t annoyed but it was such a lovely idea and what a great custodian you’d be. 😊
If you could overcome your reasons, I reckon a crowdfunding campaign could get pretty close. There couldn't be a more appropriate buyer.
Yes David, the purchase price is just the begining. The maintenance on a property like that must run into several thousand a month.
What a rare gent. Old school. All the best to him and the sale.
Looking at all the pictures of weddings and grandchildren and family in that study speaks volumes. Well done on a life well lived.

Lol everyone can see it 😂 but him. Look behind you Dave, there’s thousands of people that want to help you.
Absolutely. I hope he gets a chance to view some of David's videos.
Yes. No one would be as perfect and worthy as David!!!!
That house is magnificent, i thank the gentleman for allowing you to show it in all its glory.
Spectacular! House, workshops, garden... It's like a haven...
Cheers 🇨🇦
You love it! You've loved it for years. You are just the person he is looking for! BUY. IT.
Neil is an inspiring guy. Obviously a workaholic, neat, passionate and thinks in the long term. I wish him the best.
Couple of things wrong here..You do not get a "wealth of knowledge after 6 years" and if you want to give in a tangable way, just subscribe...
I’m sure that you could figure something else…
Don’t be afraid of BHAGs!!! (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) While this is bigger, you have already proven that you can van meet and conquer them! We would LOVE to help!!!
You wouldn’t believe how quick I clicked on this video, I remember seeing the house on one of your previous videos.
What a beautiful property!
This guy is a legend I hope he keeps living on that over time as long as possible
May God bless him and his family with many more years of overtime.
He has built a beautiful home. I would love to live there.
Wow, the owner did leave an impression on me. What a cool and genuine guy! Good luck for you Sir!
Have a happy safe day,
Chris from Missouri
David, for all the learning I have received from you and your obvious love of the canals you have so ably reported I would donate $1000.00 for you to purchase this lovely house and grounds. If you setup some kind of account please let me know.
you are the man, let's cheer him into it!
Am truly speechless 😯
Come on good people David deserves your kind donations 🙏🏼
First time I've ever seen your channel,
not even a canal boat fan,
but I would happily donate $5 to the cause.
I can remember you commenting on that house many times and it is marvelous to finaly see it .
My God! If I was 20 years younger I’d mortgage myself to the eyeballs to buy this and turn it into a boat fitting yard. What an amazing opportunity
form a consortium! and buy it as a narrowboat non profit wayfarers charity or club, or to keep for posterity - slight tongue in cheek but a viable option. What a great piece of property and location. Sincerely hope these generous and caring owners get the type of buyer they desire. I'm so glad you made this vlog, thanks for the tour.
I've been the custodian of this house...God bless you sir if only we had more people in positions of power who think like you.
Obviously, his privacy is worth more than a million dollar canal estate ;)
But it is beautiful, isn't it?
@@x--. I for one would feel no entitlement to even visit without a direct invite. 🧐 Down here in Texas, this is simply what friends do for each other…..😊
Like an Oscar winning romantic comedy I SO wanted the ending to be you moving in, ...thanks so much for your care and respect of the canals.
Seriously, David, who amongst us does not think you would be the perfect person for the property.
Host “guest” boats for future episodes, and we all get to enjoy the views for that idyllic house and location.
All the best to Neil and Helen.
I love the idea of inviting guest boats around for videos! That would be amazing.
The owner expresses himself very well with n infectious enthusiasm.
David, it's yours with a bit of fund raising donations.
What a lovely place. David would be the perfect owner. I hope the new owners will be good stewards.
Absolutely! David has to buy this!
Yes, the health part made me sad too. I hope they sell, and the right buyer (#cruisingthecut ?) come along.
A very thoughtful man and his wife; "custodian" - a great steward of this property.
David I think ALL of us who follow you could chip in and help you get that house.
What a great place. Well done, Neil. Truly, a testament to his zest for life.
Yank here. Wonderful owner and family. Amazing property restoration with such incredible history and charm.
Please don't be shy?? DAVID?
What a lovely man Neil is.. God Bless him.....🙏😊🙏🙏
@ 10:27 I had to pause. The seller is talking to the next ‘custodian,’ it’s you Mr. John’s!
The simple minimalism of this cottage is a breath of fresh air from many modern homes. Wonderful.
Actually you are the right person for this place .You never know!
A lovely lovely uplifting video what a joy. Neil the owner is just a gentleman and a treasure someone who cares as he prepares to handover a beautiful home to the next family.
