    First of all the person interviewing Prof Sen should have been more courteous. A person of such stature like Prof Sen who is now an inspiration to aspiring Physicist in India, the Asian & the European Region will sure leave his mark on the world stage. He is going to be remembered as another stalwarts like Satyendra Nath Bose and CV Raman. No doubt about that.. in fact he is a pioneer of creativity in the field of String Theory... Salute

    It is always great to hear Prof. Sen, one of the stalwarts in String Theory. But however, the interviewer should be one who knows how to speak to such great persons. This type of 'learnt-from-wiki' interviewers are surely not a good choice.

    The anchor is a PhD in Comms himself. He clearly stated at the start of the interview that they are going to only talk about physics. If you guys do not understand, he probably knows most of the answers himself, but he is acting as a curious science student here for folks who are curious about these things. Technically he is role playing. The program is called Eureka. This is not TIME magazine, what do you Page 3 ians expect? Alas! I do agree, interview with such detailed technical depth wouldn't ideally capture the audience. If you want to capture audience into science, you need a science communicator like Neil Degrass Tyson.

    I heard the interview,but could not find any discussion related to string theory i.e S-duality or Sen Conjecture for which he won Breakthrough prize.Afterall many famous physicists believe string theory is non sense as it will never be experimentally verified.But I have seen youtube videos of world's greatest theoretical physicist Edward Witten related to string theory which were awesome.
    BTW I like only those fields of physics where I can invent a lot-such as semiconductor physics,materials science,quantum technology,fiber optics etc.Me(only 5 patent applications so far) & My cousin inventor Arpan Chakraborty(226 patents at present,his research advisor Shuji Nakamura has 650+ patents) are working on semiconductor technology...so may be I am not the right person to talk about theoretical physics.

    sen state on his website:
    _
    My area of research is string theory, -- a theory that tries to give a unified description of all matter and the forces between them based on the postulate that the elementary constituents of matter are tiny one dimensional (string-like) objects instead of point particles. My specific research interests include S-duality, tachyon condensation, black hole entropy and superstring perturbation theory.
    _
    so i'm trying to make sense of this... please someone - anyone - help me -- strings have one dimension ? so what is the point ?

    • @platomanchi
      @platomanchi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      - point is 0 dimensional - no width, no length, no height which means it doesn't have area or volume. you can define a point by giving it spacial coordinates but you cannot say point is big or small or medium. It just doesn't have any properties. Even the spacial coordinates makes sense to us because we live in 3 dimensional world and that is how we can define a point. point is 10 units on x axis, 20 units on y axis and 30 units on z axis. this tells you where the point is but it doesn't tell anything about the point because point has no value associated to it. it just is a dot with no width and no height and no length.
      - string (aka line) is 1 dimensional - only length. no width or height also no area or volume. You can say line is 10 units long, that is all you can say about a line. Line doesn't have width or height. Interesting this is you can say line is collection of infinite amount of points. You can imagine a line as infinite number of points marching in a direction. String theory states that particles like electrons are not particles but a string/line vibrating at frequency. This also confirms the fact that we can never know where exactly an electron is at any given point of time because its not a particle to give you exact position. its a string you can only know where the highest amplitude of the vibration is.
      - plane (square, circle, rectangle etc) are 2 dimensional - they have length and width which means they have area but no volume. Same with line and point, you can imaging a square to be collection of infinite lines of equal length stacked upon each other. Imagine if you have to fill a square with pen you will keep drawing straight lines one upon another until all of the square is filled right
      - Any object we see, humans, dogs, ball, paper everything is 3 dimensional object - has length, width and height so they have surface area and volume. Objects are collection of planes stacked one upon another. Cube is simple infinite number of squares stacked one upon another. Ball is infinite number of circles with different radius stacked one upon another etc.
