Stokowski conducted the premiere on November 6th 1936 with the Philadelphia Orchestra..and then never again! Until he recorded this version in 1975 with the NPO...to my opinion the best performance till his day!

Thanks for this video ! One of his master works conducted here by a real maestro and closed friend of Rachmaninov himself. Wonderful pictures too ...

93 years old, conducting like he was 30. He had no right to be conducting this well at his age!
The same year he signed a 5 year contract with Columbia taking him to 100: after he passed away, his 2nd last recording, the Brahms 4th, came out and is amazing. However, the last album, the. Bizet Carmen and L'arlessiene suites is Stoki on auto-pilot - he made just one Album too many.

Is there any way to purchase the MP3 version of this recording? I am finding everything available in the US EXCEPT the Desmar/RCA/Ham Studio London recording, which is the source of this TH-cam audio track! Can anyone help?

@@debussy10 - Thank you for the tip! I'll track one down and hang onto it for the next time we stage the Lois Ellyn ballet choreography for "Vocalise"! We've been working from a very poor audio track pulled from a VHS tape of one of the early performances, and I'd love to match the music should it come round again.

Sorry about that- I didn't know it had been transferred to CD. But if you're a fan of analogue sound, the Desmar is incredible and for some reason always sounded to me like an imaginary recording that Stoki had recorded in the 70s with the Philadelphia- or alternately like a Stoki/Philly recording from the 30s that had magically been transferred to 70s stereo: It's a real gem.
