As a lifelong Alaska fisherman living in Germany now I loved it small boat sailing is the best I did hawaill to mainland twice in 28 foot cutter wouldlove to visit sometime thank you so much

Unfortunately for me, those rolling seas would have made me sick. But I am doing fine now as I watch your video while eating my dinner. Do you take naps or time off deck to rest? If so, how long do you feel safe being off deck? Seems to be a lot of vessel traffic in that area. Glad you made it back to you home port safely. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us.
Hi Greg. No signs of seasickness on that trip. Not possible to take naps during this crossing due to the traffic but also the land proximity. It takes approx two hours to come free from the TSS and after that, during the Winter it is pretty much free of traffic with an occasional fishing vessel. I just take time off deck to rest but NOT sleep! Going up to check every 10 minutes or so and keeping an eye on the AIS. Thank you for watching. I appreciate.

@MikeSantis It is a Fleming with auxiliary rudder (ie not connected to the steering but drives its own rudder). Impeccably built with all heavy 316 SS parts.. I bought it off someone who had a 50 ft heavy boat but who could never get it to follow a straight line.. My boat is a lightweight CAL 34, so we thought we would be OK but after installation, I couldn't get it to go in a straight line, either. Eventually I ditched the axillary rudder and rebuilt it to drive the steering wheel (had a drum fabricated), which was better but still drifted off course.. Then I substituted the lines for dynema (no luck) then with wire (with turnbuckles, so zero slack in the system) and it works great - even better than the original manufacturers claims. Conclusions: 1. Auxiliary rudders need to be big to be effective. Driving your own rudder is a better solution; 2. Wire is superior to line, given that you can tension it.

Hi Mike Another great video. Thanks:) I have a question for you about your autopilot (tiller). I have seen in a previous video, that you have a Raymarine ST1000+ and a ST2000+. Besides the ST2000+ pushing more weight, is there any difference? Maybe the st2000+ is more quick to respond and less noisy?
Hi Berthel. That's an issue I want/need to check out. I mean, I must dig into the settings and make changes and experiment. My ST2000 have been playing games with me suddenly changing direction or just staying too long (like a few secs) without activity. The ST1000 it is more stable but yes slower. I believe that has to do with the settings. I must look into the settings and compare their settings and try to find out better settings before I wear them out! Thanks for watching
I have the ancient Raytheon ST1000+ and I have no reason to replace it. It's not the fastest but it have never missed a beat and I've even dropped it a few times, haha

Great to get an update on your journey. I complete the move to my 40ft'r May 15th. Then start my own journey around all of New Zealand's territorial islands and waters before heading further afield. Fair winds and following seas!

Wow can’t believe you replied so soon my first boat was a folk boat named delphin my cruiser was the Heather a kauri wood copper nailed cutter. She now belongs to the maritime museum in Port Townsend Washington. During covid I built a clinker sailboat in my garage in Radolfzell Germany which is direct on the Bodensee better known as lake Konstanz. Thanks again for your video and your reply from Barcelona at the seafood show
Please keep the videos coming Mike, it inspires me to hurry up and complete the refurb on my 1968 GD28, especially when i occasionally get down and demotivated. I have an old Hasler SP3 windvane to fit to mine, old but in perfectly good condition and kind of inkeeping with the traditional old school vibe of the boat! 🙂

It took me several years to install and then adjust my wind vane, but now I love it! As you say, most autopilots are not built for heavy weather.
