I lived in a dense forested and remote mountainous area in South Africa and I always hiked alone, so I would totally disagree. I got lost several times because I never realized that after 4:30 sunlight can no longer penetrate the forest and it gets dark. But that's how you learn. I think that all the years I did rock climbing made me acutely aware of my abilities and limitations, so in the forest I wasn't too reckless in my judgments. My rule of thumb is : never climb up something without a rope that you can't down climb. If I had taken your advice, I'd never honed my skills as a mountain guide...

My friends brother went missing off table mountain a few years ago, he was never found and he was a very experienced hiker and climber. It's a dangerous place to hike, you can lose your trail quickly, you can lose visibility quickly, and there are plenty of unforgiving drop offs that can break legs or worse. My condolences to all of Brooks family, friends, and colleagues. I am glad for all of you that at least she was found as many people who have gone missing on the mountain, will never be found unfortunately.

I live in Cape Town. This is such a sad tragedy and I pray for her parents, family and friends that they find comfort and solace in this dark time. Table Mountain is an iconic tourist attraction and many people get into trouble there often. It's not always crime related. And the idea of sending this young woman to South Africa to train local men and boys on the dangers of "masculine toxicity" is pure insanity (a fact that this story fails to really report in detail) in the danger that presented. Her team in South Africa should have warned her about going out alone, especially hiking in the middle of nowhere, but they are probably just as clueless as she was. She should have stayed in the USA and studied at the Planetarium. She'd still be alive. And now, it looks like she paid the ultimate price for it.

The cause of her death will be determined by an autopsy. The City of CT will not be able to hide the cause. Table Mountain is not a walk up a path, it is dangerous terrain and the weather can change in an instance.

I hiked solo multiple times, and even climbed the slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town South Africa in the 1970's. Very dangerous. If you want answers from the South African authorities, don't hold your breath... They are incompetent at best. So sad that this happened. My condolences to the family and friends.

Had a strange dream last night and a brief part in it i was walking past a family of people that were sitting outside next to what persume was their home maybe 30 people of all ages, a couple had dread locks, all white people fair skin blond hair, and they all shared resemblance to this girl. Im sure just a wierd coincidence. They did a wierd subtle side to side head shake kind of like east indians do. They were all smiling even a little one did this slight head shake and i thought it was cute. They said they were like a American indian sounding tribe and were at this place because they were relocated. Seeing this womans photo made me remeber my dream from last night. Been having strange dreams lately.

Table Mountain. I got it. Enough. Apparently, there is a deficit of natural features in SA.
Had that not been the case, there would have been more discussion surrounding the statement alluding to the missionary's purpose in SA, and I paraphrase: Coaching boys on proper masculinity. Once again, I paraphrased, but did the gentleman actually say something of the sort??
That, in my opinion, is a matter worthy of discussion, considering the audacity implied by someone of that age.

We have thousands and thousands of tourists who have had wonderful holidays in our country. Crime is happening worldwide including the USA. I wont go into details either.
