“Dark Sonic” is Shadow the hedgehog! I totally understand why someone who knows nothing about Sonic would think he’s a “dark Sonic” at 1st glance, haha, especially since in the game he debuts in (Sonic adventure 2) starts off with people mistaking him for Sonic (granted he looks different enough from him that it’s a little hard to believe but still). Therefore, I believe they did design him to look at least somewhat similar to him.
That said he's his own character who's lore goes pretty hard imo
