Just googled to begin. It appears that the river and the future state were named for Lord de la Warr and the people living there took that name. They were the Lenape ("the People"). Interesting. Got that from the Lenape/Delaware Indian official site. See, learn something new every day! 😉
Question, m'dear: I always thought that the state of Delaware was named for the Delaware Indians. Didn't they exist before this gentleman arrived in Virginia? I can't think of when that name came about so I've got to do some research on it. I'll let you know when I know. But do you have any proof to help me get started? Re: this section, it was TOO short! I have thoroughly enjoyed "The True Reportory...." Great stuff!
