Mornin Blackie. To add to the basic strap: some belt keepers. I've got them on the duty belt, and I've taken the extra ones and added them to a few pieces of camp gear. The common 2in, double button, keeper will work on a lot of shoulder straps; give you the lock the strap onto the belt option as you showed for gathering; and give tie in/lashing points for other gear too.
For other readers, keepers pop up in surplus stores, thrift stores, and sporting good sections of some box stores.

Blackie, the strap you showed first is a great piece of kit. I could use two or three of them. Especially to use one to hang my 2 quart canteen when bush walking. The butt pack - I used one as a hip pouch when I used to do competition surf and rock fishing. Military surplus is built to last. You’re so lucky to be near a place like Kaufmans.

Great video Blackie, I've used these straps to help haul ammo cans around and I I've used these GP straps on sustainment pouches and radio bags to make haversacks out of them. Like you said a thousand and one uses for these.

One small budget bag that I have found is a Swedish surplus gas mask bag. I bought one then a few more. They were $7 each before tax and shipping. I think it would be a perfect day bag for someone who is starting to take being in nature seriously. Like a kid. There is enough room for what you will need thought the day. Excellent video Blackie.

Great video! I like to put a couple of paracord slip loops on a wide strap, slip them over a beaver's front and hind foot, and carry them out back to the truck. Very useful to have.

The strap on my haversack came off an old laptop bag from the 90s. For those still using thin, cheap shoulder steaps, dig in your closet and see what you have to upgrade.

A very similar strap was used for the military 2 quart canteen cover.
Edited to add: I had an uncle who gave me a canteen and a couple of green t-shirts back when I was a kid. He was my best uncle...!

I had one of those and what I did was, I took a large coffee can and I snipped it, and I made it into a shell for that sack in between the canvas and the liner
I also wore that sack on my pistol belt on my hips😅

Thanks Blackie. I’ve been using those straps for a long time, on all kinds of things. My local Army Navy store usually has unused ones for about five to six bucks.

Those are great straps for a number of things. Theyre easy and cheap to find. I have an Australian butt pack from the 80's, its huge, almost to big to haversack, so i put two of those on it and use for a light back pack

Your M-3 (unit 3 ) bag could also be used as a "haversack". I use one to keep in the truck with kit items and a poncho rolled up in the middle of the M-3 before fastening the buckle. This is in addition to a tool set and jumper cables. The M-3 gives easy access to the contents when unrolled and hanging by the "Utility strap"

Hi Blackie - I'm curious how you feel about webclip attachments: ALICE clips versus just tying it with emptied paracord. I recently pulled all my ALICE clips to swap over to paracord, probably had 6 different clips (including a few plastic austrian glock-made clips) and I found it saved me about half an ounce when weighed out. Have you ever had an ALICE clip fail on you? Any benefit to ALICE clips over tying on pouches with paracord?
