  • Now that we understand what Sportswashing IS, it's time to think about how it works in practice (or if it does at all). When Putin handed Trump that soccer ball in 2018, what was he really giving him? We're seeing it on display right now at the Winter Olympics in Beijing, and will see it again at the World Cup in Qatar, but there are plenty of examples to break down in detail--including one that you might not expect.

    I understand how it works when Russia and Qatar are hosting world cups, but how does it work when it comes to Man City for example? There isn't a direct visual link from City to Abu Dhabi aside from the Etihad branding. How does the sportswashing brainwash in that case?

      It's not brainwashing so much as it is association, which the Etihad branding fully accomplishes. Man City are so big and so successful now that it doesn't take much
