This was great fun, Jonathan. Amazingly, I guessed correctly. The walnut seemed a tad bit warmer in sound, where the maple had that traditional mando "snap" to it. Both beautiful instruments. It would be a joy to own either one. Thanks for doing this. Big Fun!
Stunningly beautiful instruments. I felt the burl walnut had a nicer tone and sound, but in saying that both are exceptional instruments. I would be proud to own either. I currently own an Ellis mandolin and I love it but these two instruments look and sound fantastic in my opinion! Keep up the exceptional art that you are creating Mr McClanahan. You are truly a master luthier!
I don’t have a trained ear, Johnathen, but I really couldn’t tell that much of a difference at all where I could pinpointed I’m learning mandolin. I have three but they need some serious repair work that I can’t afford to send out to others so trying to do that myself, but like I said, Mandolins are beautiful. I couldn’t tell much of a difference, but thank you so much for
Professional looking and sounding intro clips but the audio from your camera is totally distorted. The instruments look great but there no way to understand how they sound.
I knew right away that the 2nd was the maple. I preferred it. The sound (mic?) is awful, which makes differentiating rather challenging, but to my ear on my speakers, #2 maple sounded better.
Alder body maple neck spruce top is a combo I would love to hear, I am playing a Carvin Holdsworth headless model with one bridge pickup and responsive top similar size to mandolin and I feel it would give a beautiful balance on a mandolin plugged micd, even full Alder body.. also the burling and curling might give the player some inconsistencies since it is an acoustic instrument, I guessed wrong without really thinking about the sounds correctly having the Carvin h1 in my mind..but while bill delap made the original Holdsworth models they started off maple body then to maple back spruce top then full spruce.. should have guessed maple for the second guitar with the high end while I found the walnut Mando had a squishier mid range.. would love once to hear Alder back , thank you for the beautiful mandolins you create with the love you put into the builds, god bless
Sound is very similar, but 2nd seems brighter. However, without proper warmup/getting the full feel on the 1st instrument, could YOUR playing have improved/altered the sound? Not sure how to put that in proper terms, but you know what I'm getting at. Either way, beautiful mandolins in all aspects.
Nixa is only about 30 mins from me .. I'd sure like to see that mandolin up close .. Did you have to make that back thinner that the maple to get the sound ??
@@McClanahanStringedInstruments did you ever think about pairing it with a cedar top ? I know it wouldn't be a Banjo killer but, maybe it might balance it out even more ? I've been personally thinking about making a couple guitar back and sides and making different tops to glue on and test them .... I know that OMs tend to have sharp overtones . I have some black Limba that I was going to make a dreadnought out of ( figuring that because black limba has a mahogany tone to it , it may sound like a D-18) , However, I have been leaning towards an OM because the Black Limba may counteract the sharpness that's inherent of an OM .... Which made me think of your mandolin and the western cedar top .... I heard one with a maple back and was surprised because I was always told they were too deep and weak... Anyway sorry for the long post ... I think it loud a lot
That walnut burl is amazing. Both sound awesome! True craftsmanship

They both sound incredible Jon! Excellent job.
Thanks!
Both mandolins are awesome in every way.
Thanks bro!

Wonderful work, brother. God is blessed your hands.
Both sounds Great! Very near to each others i think. Maybe maple was just a little bit brighter?
Either would be a lifetime instrument for me. They both sound great and would work for chord melody.

Agreed

They both sound great but I prefer the burl walnut one. The maple seems more percussive.
Jonathan I believe the second one is burl. So very similar but #2 sounds more percussive to me.
Awesome! Great thoughts Stephen 😊

I def had to graduate it diff all over

I actually love Cedar tops. I’ve revoiced a few old Gibsons with Cedar tops and they came out great. Let me know how yours come out
Maple Mandi is louder. They both sound great
I was incorrect 😢
That’s ok😂
Well, that's it for you, then Stephen... NO MANDOLIN FOR YOU! Come back ONE YEAR!
