    I laugh everytime he so easily explains a conplex musical problem and he hesitates a moment, but its not because the nearly impossible musical passage, its because hes seeking to find the right English word for us!! 😂 God bless, you Matteo. May God give you many many productive years.

    His genius is the musicality of soloing not the technique - his fingers do what he has in mind, so mature and it sounds as it was all just available as the air we breathe … once upon a time I decided to leave fingerstyle because I believed in rock or fusion guitar must be a pick. This bravery is what kicks me the most about the technique. It’s simply beautiful as a whole.

      I agree. Abasi is great but he is doing something different, rather a Chapstick player for me, also seems to be a less improviser with a bunch of repetitions. Great, incredible but I just musically cant digest the tons of notes he plays in a second- he is an acrobat. Matteo sounds more melodic, more musical from a classical approach. Others who socialized on shredding metallic music they would choose Abasi, I guess and it is allright

    For classical I was trained that the sound should be 50% nail and 50% flesh. You don't need long nails for this. Additionally you can strengthen nails by painting a nail strengthening polish on them. I used to do it all the time when I was younger, but switched to playing with a pick. For simplicity's sake now that I'm older and don't have as much time to practice I'm switching back to fingerstyle. I used to play fingerstyle on electric but it was tough to play rock and jazz which is why I switched to a pick. Mateo has inspired me and shown me it's not impossible.

  • @picksalot1

    For the "free stroke" picking, I think the reason his fingertips are almost parallel to the strings is so that he can pluck each string at almost the same distance from the bridge. This helps assure that there isn't much difference in the "timbre" of each string. This is particularly important on steel strings, but is not much of an issue on nylon strings. And, that's why his hand position for free stroke is so different to that of many Classical Guitarists.

    • @ramseymodiri2752
      @ramseymodiri2752 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’ve seen this a lot in classical(I grew up playing and competing in it). Some guys would use a more parallel free stroke style and almost pop the string to get a louder sound(you get more flesh and brush of the finger at that angle) I remember a few big name guys teaching it at clinics, it would get a sound that was closer to a rest stroke(louder) withought having the disadvantages of pulling through the strings. Because with free strokes you tend to be able to do more (arpeggios and what not). I think this is why some players use ramp nails (nails that start small at the front and get bigger to the left).

    Just a little food for thought. I was going through these and if you can 2 way pick slant and economy pick/sweep in both directions you can do these kinds of phrases. The additional secret is hybrid picking only when it is absolutely necessary. Like when he was demonstrating the minor arpeggio going backwards in 4s you could hybrid pick the first note and sweep the rest for each group of 4.
    Hope this helps because I like these phrasing ideas and they are definitely doable with a pick and fingers imho. Good luck!

    • @deanharringtonguitarist9684
      @deanharringtonguitarist9684 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He uses the nails to pluck and talks about it in one of his interviews. But he's probably playing lower on the pad by the finger print for the tapping. In this video, you can freeze frame at the 2:50 min mark and see he has fingernails that protrude past the flesh. Not long, for sure, but long enough to pluck with. They appear to be a rounded-ramp shape -- lower on the thumb side of the fingernail. I don't think the nail is used for tapping, of course, but for his arpeggio technique and his rest stroke technique he's using fingernails.

    Cool video of the times he attempted to teach this approach kudos to you my guy.Now this is basically tremolo picking with fingers which is basically classical guitar approach but the downside to this is that the fingernails have to be on point at all times and thats not fun especially when finger picking electric guitar strings.
    I prefer the Marshall harrissons swybrid picking approach to things:He is basically economy picking but with the added twist that he is using the middle finger to..save the pick from moving and pluck the lonesome note on a different string if its by itself.That way you have all the advantage of playing with a pick but also use the rest of the fingers when its absolutely essential to prevent you from jumping up and down.So if you have an awkward upstroke for example that messes up your economy picking flow you get that with the middle(or ring) finger and continue....
    In the end its about finding the thing that works for you...if i had an acoustic guitar for example i would attempt to play it more with fingers(apoyando and tirando type stuff like on a classical guitar) but if you give me an electric then its mainly economy picking and sometimes hybrid if really need to....cant say it would work for the next guy though...thats why videos like that are important for guitarists...see what works for you practice it and make it your own....

      It's called a 'guitar string dampener' or a 'fret wrap'. It is used to suppress sympathetic resonance and overtones, as well as minimize the other string's (i.e. the strings that are not being played) vibration.
      In other words, it's a device to make the notes being payed more clear, by eliminating "parasitic" noises.

      @Jimmy Galloway interesting... I've always played with my fingers and when I do a lot of gigs my index nail gets trashed and I just end up using the callus which seems to do the job.
      I was once told in my youth to file the nail towards the centre and have always done that. I'll have to try filing in one direction as my girlfriend once told me that too!

    • @gpesp
      @gpesp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jimmy Galloway I use a technique similar to Matteo’s free stroke. To do this I think the best way to file your nails is to use sandpaper that you fold around the strings. Many classical players do the same.
