    I like my 40kwh Leaf but when it hit 40 degrees plus here in Germany charging was a challenge. Car took days to cool down even in my garage under the house.
    Was first thinking „wow the new leaf is great“ but after seeing this video I realized it’s not worth the upgrade because in the end it takes the same time for long trips as my Leaf.
    I recently went 800 kilometers with my family and it took me about 14 hours. Four charging stops were planned but took two additional stops because of the kids.
    My advice would be do the 500 in one day and the rest the following.
    We will see how my leaf holds up when we visit Norway next year.
    Great video 👍

    This video confirmed exactly what I thought. It's ok for day to day, but the Leaf 30 is ok for day to day. So there's no point buying a larger battery Leaf really... Model 3 SR+ has a smaller battery and goes further, and faster. It's just nuts

    • @pedronunes1353

      Exactly... I have a Leaf 30 kWh and I was thinking on a second EV to completely remove the fossil cars from my home. I'm only missing a EV capable of doing about 500 Km a couple of times a year with a good fast charging network... So, I'm probably going to a Model 3 SR+ next year unless something better appears in the market!

      @@rocketman4315 Thanks for the tip! :) I need to wait a few more months before making a decision: In Portugal we don't have Ionity or any other fast charging company that people have in Norway or Germany. We have to "trust" in the public 50 kW chargers (just one charger per each 50 Km now - and sometimes the network is down or with some chargers disconnected) or we have about 6 or 7 SuC that always work and are expanding...

    • @shaonian

      I find the limit with my 30kwh leaf is 3 fast charges. #4 will send it into the red zone and it will stay there forever, even on a cold day.
      Not only is there no cooling but the battery is well insulated. Even at 53C you don't feel anything warm above or below the battery.
      I will be so happy when there is an alternative that I can afford.

    • @pedronunes1353
      @pedronunes1353 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shaonian I did 4 fast charges with my Leaf 30kWh...to accomplish a 600Km round-trip at 100 Km/h. Probably it took me 8 hours with the chargers (75Km/h average - Better than Bjorn test for this new Leaf). I didn't had LeafSpy back then so probably the battery was already really hot at the end (10 dashes out of 12) and it took about 2 or 3 days to return to the 5 dashes average.

      It's winter here and I was going to a ski resort but I did do 110km/h.

    "It can't do 1000Kms at once regularly, so it's no better than a 30Kw Leaf!!!" Some comments around here are so damn stupid. We have a daily commute of a good 100Kms and we need an EV that will do that no matter what (as in: with charge to spare for ice and snow and also in case we get stranded) and will also do the occational additional leg to another destination. And all this without the need to charge on the road and without coming home with an emtpty battery. We will almost never do fast charging, maybe once a year, and if so, we won't do more than 600Kms a day. We are not 18 anymore. Fast charging is the most uneconomical way to run an EV anyways. The Leaf e+ - opposed to a 30Kw leaf - is perfect for that. Just sayin.

    Why didnt they give it a CCS chargeport (only for europe) and 11 kW On-board charger (maybe also the europe package).

      -"The downside? Well, the battery is borrowed from the Kona 39, it has been reported that this means it has fewer cells. That probably means a lower system voltage, nominally 319V compared to 360V. So what? Well, charging power is dictated by the current available at the charger side, and the voltage of the battery. Power = (Volts * Amps). With a 125A charger, and 319V, you’d get 40kW out of an existing “50kW” Polar Ultracharger. That means 46 minutes to 80%, assuming 125A is available at a state of charge as high as 80%. That’s in line with the quoted 54 minutes to 80% from Hyundai, perhaps confirming the 319 volt setup.
      However, even 40kW is looking optimistic if you look at experience of Kona 39 charging in cold weather. The rapid charging behaviour is significantly more conservative than the existing Ioniq.
      To compare with other cars, a charging rate of “miles per hour” is useful, so this represents around 190 miles per hour added*. Not bad, but disappointing compared to the existing car which can reach 240 or so..."

    Wow. Love your reviews. You are amazing! I learned a lot today from this one. Had no idea that if the battery is too hot, it will effect the speed charging ability.and that a cooler battery is.better for.the.faster 50 kw charging. I am puzzled as to why Nissan would not have addressed this problem. Did they not think that owners would not want to take long distance trips? That this car would be mostly for city driving? So, on a hot summer day, if you are driving somewhere far, battery can overheat and effect charging g time. Not good.

    As someone who occasionally drives my Model 3 2020 SR+ across Europe (Eastern-->Southern), it's hard to do 1000km in less than 13 hours. In reality there are road constructions, traffic jams, longer-than-anticipated breaks due to toilet and what not. 13-15h is a pretty realistic result nevermind charging, you won't be going much faster than that. Of course, charging adds to any lost time due to traffic so decent charging speeds are important.

    Something I see in the U.S., that's shown here, is that the non-Tesla charging networks are poorly thought out. Charger locations are not at popular existing destinations and there's only one -- maybe two -- chargepoints at each location. I know FASTNED exists in Europe, but there's just no comparison in America. ElectrifyAmerica, the DieselGate-funded thing, is just putting 1-3 50 kW chargers at hundreds of the *thousands* of Walmart locations in the U.S. If you do road trips more than once per year in America, you just need to buy a Tesla.

Will look to replace with a used 2018 leaf next year which should double my range, but still easily recharge overnight on standard 240v at home. p.s. I still own an old toyota corolla for those occasional long holiday trips. My personal view is that an EV should be your second car, that you use 90% of the time.

      Where do you live where a model 3 is comparable to a Leaf in price? In Sweden the SR+ it at least 50% more expensive than a Leaf (or most other non-premium EVs). I'm in envy of Norway, they don't have to pay VAT on EVs, so they're 20% cheaper than here in Sweden. We get a 60000 SEK grant on new EVs, but that's certainly not enough to make them affordable.

    Watched this several times and found it disturbing. Car is supposed to charge at up to 100kW - max here is just over 40 - why? Was the Level 2 time and wait time deducted from total trip time? Our Leaf would overheat on a given trip at 0° or 40° ambient; all that really mattered was kWh added in a given time period.

  • @lanceareadbhar
    @lanceareadbhar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would it make a difference if you parked somewhere for an hour in the shade before fast charging? For example, if your destination required you to park for a few hours, would it make sense to wait before charging to cool down the battery. Clearly, the car was not built for this. Still like it for daily use as long as you have a second car for long drives.

  • @PeterBering
    @PeterBering 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In order to go 1000 km in a fast manner with an affordable car you don't need a big battery, but you need fast charging capability guaranteed by a liquid cooled thermal management of the battery.
    Nissan isn't understanding that.
    When I did 1000 km on BMW i3 with a 18,8 kWh battery it charged with a mean of 47 kW.
    And speed was 120 km/h as long as ist was possible, not 90 km/h.
    See facebook.com/peter.bering/posts/10209273499474963

      Could be a lot of different reasons for someone buying this, I´ll just pick a few randomly.
      1. Long time Nissan customer with good relationship with dealer and their service.
      2. Ease of getting in and out of a car with higher roof line, maybe due to bad back.
      3. Prefers charge port in front, might have a parking space where drivers door is blocked if backing in or just bad at reversing.
      4. Works for company that has a financial agreement that make driving Nissan cheaper.
      5. Lives near Nissan dealer, and very far from Tesla service center.
      6. Don´t buy stuff made in America for some reason.
      You don´t have to agree with any of this, but every person has different opinions, needs and preferences. And the Leafs seem to sell in decent numbers, so some people are buying them.
