Pretty neat tutorial Warren, you really have a knack for this stuff. Ah, the bimini twist, likely the most renowned and esoteric fishing knot in existence. I can remember attempting to learn this one as a kid because of how everyone claimed it was the strongest knot in existence so it became akin to climbing mt Kilimanjaro as you mentioned, something I just had to try and learn because it was the best and hardest to master at the time. The thing is I never really found a common use for it as my fishing passion evolved. I have maybe seen this knot used once by a charter tuna trip but now with crimping it is becoming a lost knot. But after watching your recent short on the preliminary results of the strength test, this knot may need to be revisited and added back into our arsenals!
Hey Peter, good to hear from you. This knot really does fly, a few key areas to watch out for also, when I found myself doing all the testing. I suppose like most things in life once you have done it enough it becomes as easy as 1,2,3 I knew it was strong but you won’t believe how strong. With terminal knots it’s easy to achieve a high strength knot as you have a rigid end to fix too, but with line to line knots or loop knots it’s a totally different ball game. You only have to look at the mono line to line strength test results and see how they struggle to achieve low 80% results then in steps the Bimini twist, technically it’s a loop knot but in essence it’s a knot with line coming in and going out. And it’s just so strong. I mainly use it for lure fishing with metal spoons or poppers with a multiplier setup fir beach surf casting. It creates an easy leader by just doubling your existing line. Tightlines.
Love your videos! Suscribed, bought all your tools, love them too! Now on this particular video: Works like a charm on braid… can’t make it work on mono! When you say ‘on braid i like to use 25 wraps..’ we sort of expect you to tell us how many to use on mono? If you can make a video for mono or update this one to attend to mono wld be lovely! Thx for all the good work!
@@MrTorlob thank you so much, that is very kind. Braid is so tough on this knot. I have a friend who does a bunch of land based big tuna stuff…. He said he averages about 60 wraps for braid. Hopefully I’ll get around to testing braid this year Tightlines.
what is to stop it from breaking on the loop? the one that goes around the arbo or hook eye etc if it fails there it means it failed on the knot so is it still considered 100%?
At home I use the Aussie braid finished by doubling the tag as recommended by Geoff Wilson in his knot books, mostly only tying the Bimini in small line sizes and in braided line. I find that the Aussie braid works better for wind-on leaders. If I have to tie a double out on the water I will always go with the Bimini finished with the Rizzuto. Using a smaller loop of line under the last wraps of the Bimini to pull the tag under the wraps (like finishing whipping a rod wrap) is easier than reversing the Rizzuto wraps as per normal. I find it easier to make a bit longer double and using my knees to spread the initial loop to make the outer wrap. Just make sure you don't use too much pressure which can leave mono deformed where it comes out of the wraps. Braid is easy to work with except for unrolling the Rizzuto wraps in small and, especially, limp braids. I use more wraps in braid so it will be interesting to see your tests in different line types and strengths. I only have full fluorocarbon line, Berkley Vanish and 100% fluorocarbon Trilene, on a couple of small baitcasters and I use a modified Albright if using a different leader on them so tests of the Bimini in fluorocarbon aren't as useful for me.
Hi Brian, This is so useful and helpful thank you, I really want to nail down the testing on this knot, its such an important knot to so many anglers and I want to give it the time it deserves. I think with Mono especially the lighter stuff the results are going to be really really good. Braid as you say may need a lot more wraps, and if its more that 25 I have to do the outer overwraps in 2 stages as the line does coil up around my left 2 fingers and I don't want to damage it. How do you do the initial overwraps after the jump, do you haven them tight or slightly spread out, I think this will be important for Braid? Fluorocarbon, well I am really keen to see how it ties, its almost an unknown for me as I have not really used many fluoro main lines. Tightlines and thx for the above.
@@toitfishing I've always tried to get the initial over wraps as tight as I can and haven't had any trouble with them but a comparison will be really helpful. I'm predicting that you will be proved correct on the light lines and the braid but I've got to think that since the Bimini has been used on lots of pro billfish boats that performance should be okay with heavier mono as well. It's really good to see you taking so much care with your testing, it certainly is helpful to those of us who want to learn what works and what's hyped. I would like to see a comparison between the Bimini and Aussie braid on various lines. Both are strong but there can only be one winner. As an Aussie it would be nice to see our plait win but as an angler I'd be just as happy to see the Bimini win as it is far easier and quicker to tie. The only variations I have seen on the plait is finishing with a Rizzuto as opposed to finishing with the tag doubled for the last several plaits then pulling the main loop through the loop in the tag. I guess you could test with different tensions used while plaiting but I've always tried to use enough tension to put a curve on the finished plait.

@@brianbrigg57 Hey Brian, so I could not wait I sneaked in three test tonight on 10lb Mono with 20 Wraps.......Blown away, its the strongest thing I have ever tested, thx again for your input
Love it wazza! I’ve been doing 40-50 wraps with 80lb braid, looking forward to see how 20-25 wraps holds up if it makes any difference or not. I start the over wraps loose then snug next to each other, kinda like doing a haywire twist in single strand wire(even twists first then barrel wraps second). Hi Lichenpen, unfortunately the only knot I have done extensive testing on is the Slim Beauty Knot you can find the video on my channel, I would watch the Testing video, its is remarkably strong and seriously easy to tie. Let me know if you try that Slim Beauty, make sure you use double Braid and overwrapped Clinch Knot. Tightlines
I would always recommend the Actual GT Knot, or the modified GT Knot we designed, both are going to maximize strength and are definitely the neatest looking connections for a Bimini to Fluoro connection.
