What a smile! This man was so extremely talented! He created Festus and made him into a real person! His singing was also very much overlooked. I thoroughly enjoy listening to his songs and watching him in every movie he's in, and of course Gun Smoke! RIP I look forward to meeting you on the other side one day.
Ken was first and foremost a musician - radio shows, a big band vocalist, then singing cowboy/hero in Saturday movie serials, then Sons of the Pioneers. That led him to smaller, then larger parts in John Ford westerns and others. Then TV in guest shots and finally his own series - Ripcord (look it up). After that ended, a guest role on Have GunWill Travel in a character sort of like Festus, got him an invitation from Gunsmoke, and the rest, as they say, . . . But he never stopped singing and performing at fairs, rodeos and public appearances.
I can't understand how you got from a country and western singer mostly to the part of Festus. So unlike him. I just recently read several people turned down the role of Mykelti Willliams in Forest Gump because they didn't want to be portrayed as an idiot. They were sorry afterwards, I think. Couldn't he get other roles? Did they dry up? He played the role of Festus for 11 years. I never knew about the other side of him.

One of my favorite character-actors. I still watch “Gunsmoke” daily and am amazed by his overall acting-talent.
