“Dirty Diana” ~ The song was written by Michael Jackson. Produced by Quincy Jones & Michael Jackson. The song was released by Epic Records on April 18, 1988, as the 5th single from the album “BAD”. It presents a harder rock sound similar to “Beat It” from the album “Thriller” and a guitar solo by Steve Stevens (Billy Idol’s guitarist). The song’s lyrics pertain to “groupies”. Initial reports at the time suggested the song was a poke at his close friend Diana Ross. However, it was later denied. In fact, Diana Ross started using the song as an overture at her concerts shortly before appearing on stage. In an interview from 1987 Ebony Jet, MJ later confirmed that the song’s lyrics were about groupies. “I love ‘Dirty Diana’. That’s one of my favorites, because it’s a life story of a groupie - I hate to say the word “groupie” but that’s what it is. And it’s something that I’ve experienced and a lot of people who grow up on the road - like me. I don’t remember not performing.” - MJ. “Dirty Diana”, similar to BAD’s previous singles, charted within the top 20 and top 10 worldwide though receiving mixed reviews from critics. It was a commercial success worldwide in 1988, charting at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on 7/2/88 after climbing the chart for 9 weeks. It spent a total of 14 weeks on the Hot 100. The song also charted within the top ten in multiple countries, including the Uk, France, Italy, and New Zealand. In 2009, after Michael’s death, the song re-entered charts, mainly due to digital download sales. The song charted at No. 18 on the French Digital Singles Chart on 7/4/09. On 7/12/09, the song peaked at #13 on the Swiss Singles Chart. “Dirty Diana” re-entered the UK charts on 7/4/09, at #50 and the following week peaked at #26. “Michael said, ‘We’re going to start some new songs.’ I never knew when we were going to do a song what the song was for, but the first song I started on with Michael was ‘Dirty Diana’” - engineer Matt Forger. John Tatlock of “The Quietus” regards the song as an attempt to recreate “the pop-rock alchemy of “Beat It”. In his “BAD” review, “Los Angeles Times” Richard Cromelin describes “Dirty Diana” as a hard rock song, writing, “’Dirty Diana’ is trying to be this year’s ‘Beat It’ - a hard-rock song about a tenacious groupie that’s sent into orbit by a Steve Stevens guitar solo.” Jon Pareles, a writer for “The New York Times”, viewed “Dirty Diana” as a song about a “groupie who latches onto the narrator, mixes the sexual fears of “Billie Jean” with the hard-rock lead guitar of ‘Beat It’.” In his “BAD” review, Thom Duffy, music critic for the “Orlando Sentinel”, wrote that “Dirty Diana, a tale of a maliciously seductive fan, finds Jackson doing credible heavy-metal rock wailing,” which, the critic said, was “accompanied by a solo from Steve Stevens, the guitarist from Billy Idol’s band.” Jonathan Takiff of “The Philadelphia Inquirer” also noted elements of heavy metal in “Dirty Diana”, writing, “Plus, to tap the rock crowd (in the style of the ‘Thriller’ crossover smash ‘Beat It’ with Eddie Van Halen), Michael cut a heavy metal-tinged ‘Dirty Diana’ featuring Billy Idol’s guitar sizzler Stevie Stevens.” A music video for “Dirty Diana” was filmed in front of a live audience and released in 1988. The five-minute short film was directed by Joe Pytka. It was filmed in March of 1988 in Long Beach, California. The woman who appears in the video is model Lisa Dean, chosen over hundreds of girls who auditioned for the role. She had previously modeled in a Levi’s 501 commercial. She earned a modest $300 a day for the short film. It won the “Number-One Video in the World” at the 1st World Music Awards held on 4/14/89. It’s featured on the DVD albums “Number Ones”, “Michael Jackson’s Vision”, and the Target version DVD of “BAD 25” “Dirty Diana” was performed during Jackson’s BAD World Tour concerts from 1987 to 1989, but only in the second leg, as the 10th song in the setlist. MJ stated that the song also wasn’t about Lady Diana, he’s quoted saying “I wrote a song called ‘Dirty Diana’. It was not about Lady Diana. It was about certain kinds of girls that hang around concerts or clubs, you know, they call them groupies. I’ve lived with that all my life. These girls…they do everything with the band, everything you could imagine. So I wrote a song called ‘Dirty Diana’. But I took it out of the (Wembley) show in honor of her royal highness. She took me away and she said, ‘Are you going to do Dirty Diana?‘ So, I said, ‘No, I took it out of the show because of you.‘ She said, ‘No! I want you to do it…do it…do the song.” - MJ. This Is It concert series choreographer, Kenny Ortega, stated in an interview that “Dirty Diana” was going to be performed by Michael for the concerts. Ortega said that Jackson had planned to rehearse the song before he died. The set up for the song would include an expert pole dancer who would lure Jackson onto a giant steel bed on which she performed acrobatic feats. It’s been sampled in 27 songs within the music industry in total. LONG LIVE MJ THE KING OF MUSIC FOREVER! Truly The Most Versatile Music Artist To Ever Exist!👑🖤🎸🔥🌟

My man... always dropping that knowledge! Always appreciate hearing from you!
Thank you for sharing so much info about “Dirty Diana” and Michael Jackson’s creative process. It’s fascinating to see how much depth and history surround this iconic song, from its inspiration and production to its live performances and chart success.
The anecdote about Princess Diana asking Michael to perform the song is such a memorable moment-it really highlights MJ’s thoughtfulness and her playful side. Those two truly were such kindred spirits for one another, hey? And the collaboration with Steve Stevens for that searing guitar solo definitely added a unique edge to the track, making it stand out even more.
This comment is a treasure trove of knowledge for any MJ fan or music enthusiast. Truly, Michael’s versatility and artistry remain unmatched. Long live the King of Pop! 👑🎶

@@honey.brown.popcultered It’s always been my pleasure to give context to the song and impact in which the song or even music video/short film or performance differs from each other in a uniquely manner. And looking back on it in hindsight etc. to give you that perspective as well so it’s and honor to do this to accompany within your MJ journey I never get tired of doing this.

This is one of the greatest storytelling songs ever, especially the storytelling in the third verse is pure art; I can visualize the image while listening to the lyrics, like when i hear MJ sing these lyrics, "She said "I have to go home 'Cause I'm real tired, you see, But I hate sleeping alone, Why don't you come with me?" I said "My baby's at home, She's probably worried tonight, I didn't call on the phone, To say that I'm alright", I can see the picture in front of my eyes. And when he sings, *"She said ”He’s not coming back, Because he’s sleeping with me”,* I can clearly see Dirty Diana yelling at the little girl on the phone. Michael is a brilliant storyteller. 🙌🏽

Hey!!! So psyched to hear from you! How is everything?!
You’re absolutely right-Michael Jackson’s storytelling in “Dirty Diana” is nothing short of brilliant! The way he uses vivid, emotional lyrics to paint such a clear picture is pure artistry. Those lines you highlighted from the third verse are so gripping, pulling listeners into the story like they’re watching a scene unfold right in front of them.
The tension, the drama, and the heartbreak all come through not just in the words, but in how MJ delivers them with such raw emotion. It’s a testament to his genius as not just a performer, but also as a storyteller who could connect with listeners on such a deep, visual level. Few songs manage to capture that kind of cinematic intensity, and MJ did it masterfully. Truly a timeless masterpiece! 🎶
Thank you so much for your comment! Much love from the both of us!!!

This song made me stop calling Michael Jackson "The King of Pop" and start calling him "The King of Music." Michael has made songs in almost every genre, and in each genre he has composed a song, he has had a huge impact in that particular genre and has left his special trademark. In my opinion, the title "King of Pop" is too limited to an artist like Michael Jackson; he was more than just a Pop singer; this is just my personal opinion.
Great reaction, guys; as always ❤

Thank you for sharing such a kick a** comment! Honestly, I couldn’t agree more-Michael Jackson’s impact transcends the boundaries of any single genre. From rock tracks like Dirty Diana to soul-stirring ballads, funky disco hits, and even socially conscious anthems, he mastered them all and left his unique mark on music history.
The title "King of Pop" is iconic, but calling him "The King of Music" feels so fitting because his artistry reached so many corners of the musical world. His ability to innovate and inspire across genres is part of what makes him timeless and unmatched.
And thank you for the kind words about the reaction! We’re so glad you’re on this MJ journey with the both of us! Long live the King of Music! 🎶👑

Hi honey & brown. Wow finally --- welcome back you guys. How are you two and little moonwalker doing. Thank you for showing Dirty Diana. This is one of my most favorite of Michael performing... Honey, you know Michael started tearing his shirts in the Victory tour - love those moments - he's shy but bold and cocky at the same time. That's how he felt at the moment - so much emotion in his performances. I have to tell you - I believe this was about Diana - there are so many songs that are probably about Diana. You have to listen to his lyrics - he tells of his pain and his emotions - every song is a message from Michael. Great reaction video - thanks so much. Please do more - I've missed you guys. I hope you have a very happy Christmas holiday and a happy and healthy new year for all and your family. God bless and be well. 🥰🥰🥰♥♥♥🙏🙏🙏🎄🎄🎄🌟🌟🌟

He said from his mouth time and time again this was about groupues, not once did he said it was about her, and Quincy Jones the producer also confirned that. Diana Ross was his friend, he wouldn't write such a song about her, this was a song about his experience with groupies since he was a child seeing his older brothers with them but he ALWAYS sang with emotion even as a child when he hadn't even written the songs he sang and hadn't even gone through what the lyrics said at the time, at the end of the day, if he said it's about groupies, then it is about groupies.

We’re doing great, and little Moonwalker is growing so fast and keeping us on our toes! Almost 18 months old now!!! 😊 We hope you’re doing well too and having a wonderful holiday season.
You’re absolutely right about Michael’s performances-he poured every bit of his emotion into them. That mix of shyness, boldness, and raw vulnerability is what made him so unique. Those shirt-tearing moments were iconic-so much passion and intensity in everything he did. And his lyrics? They’re like an open diary of his soul, filled with messages and emotions that keep us connected to him.
Thank you for your kind wishes and lovely comment-it really means a lot to us. We’ll definitely keep the reactions coming, especially for timeless MJ moments like this one! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year as well. God bless you and your family! 💖🎄✨

    Hey, I'd missed this one!
Love your discussion and yeah, MJ is smokin. And that toestand/bodyroll/extreme powermove in 6:14 is just mind-blowing, I've seen it countless of times and it still just makes my insides explode from pure awesomeness.
The director Joe Pytka sais in the Bad 25-docu (Spike Lee) that it was supposed to be longer, this footage was just from the first day of filming, there was supposed to be a storm coming in symbolizing the storm of emotions in the song (that's why the wind is blowing so much). MJ's knees got so smashed however (not wearing knee-pads as you can see) so they couldn't continue the day after, MJ couldn't dance. This sort of amuses me, since I agree with you saying this film perfectly showcases the drama and emotional turmoil of the song. It manages to do so, with only half of the material and mostly because of MJ's performance together with the shots of a woman walking/waiting in MJ's car. (And I'm glad MJ started wearing knee-pads with time.)
I do wish sometimes, that the perspective of the women - the groupies - would have had a place in this short story, but it doesn't. I'm afraid this gives oxygen to a very misogynic narrative out there, as part of patriarchy, although I know this wasn't MJ's intention. MJ simply wrote it from the experience of the artist, of everyone using them for their own gain not seing them as human and their dislike of people using sex as a powertool. Billie Jean is in the same genre. In real life, MJ had much more compassion for what the women went through. I guess everything can't fit into the same song, the same lyrics, the same poem. Sometimes a whole piece of art is just about manifesting one single emotion or word, so always expecting MJ to portray every perspective relevant to a situation, isn't fair.
This said, I want to point out that this is a rock song. Just as Beat It is anti-racist by mixing what was seen as "black music" with "white music", this does the very same. Then with the help of Eddie Van Halen, this time around with Steve Stevens. In the same way, by combining different narratives, MJ does make a point against the hegemon masculinity of the music consert scene specifically, the musiscian more broadly. 'The rock star' was very much defined by the narrative on women/groupies, as >>all real rock stars (implicitly: men) want to have as much sex as possible; whenever, however, wherever>>. Sex, drugs and rock n roll. If criticized, it was only about how the rock star exploited women. That critique isn't wthout reason, but it also confirms and thus reconstructs the rock star as a stud crazy for women, with an extreme sexdrive.
MJ writing a hard rock song, on the topic of groupies, taking on the role of the masculine rock star, acting it out as sex on legs to a screeming electric guitarr; and writing about how used it makes him feel, how hard it is to keep a real relationship during this temptation and manipulation, how far some women are prepared to go in order to get with him - completely disregarding the star's well-being, "she trapped me in her heart" - that's still quite edgy, you know? It's quite the punch in the face of the rock star masculinity. And it's a much more interesting story picture, painted with great narration as you already pointed out.

That story is such a classic and shows both Michael's thoughtfulness and Princess Diana's playful side! He was so considerate to take Dirty Diana out of the setlist, thinking it might be inappropriate, but her revealing that it was her favorite song is just so iconic. It’s a beautiful moment that highlights the mutual admiration between two legends.
Michael putting that level of care into his decisions, even down to the setlist, is part of what made him so special. And Diana’s reaction? It just makes the story all the more unforgettable! Truly a moment of music history to treasure. 🎶✨

The fact that she told him Dirty Diana was her favorite song is such a great moment-it shows how much his music resonated with her too.

Yes Michael said in the ebony jet interview 1987 that it's about groupies those girls who do way too much backstage and stuff, you should react to it ❤ he never slept with them in fact he dispised them lol as you said he saw his older brothers sleep with them growing up and he wasn't into that at all, it might be in his book but Michael said once he liked women who had class, who were classy like him and not those who were too aggressive or provocative, he hated vulgarity and was shy haha, unlike his brothers, oh it actually remind me, on a private tape he talked about one time when one of his ex girlfriends held his hand and he said it was so magical and better than anything, and then he said "but young people today don't care about the simple things" aww he's so sweet, I mean he isn't wrong though, and I love how energetic and full of power he was while on stage, it's certainly a contrast when you watch him in interviews and stuff, he appears very shy and calm, but he had been doing it since 5 so I can understand how it became an automatic thing, he often said he felt more comfortable and free on stage than anywhere else, and you can see it! Anyway this was a great reaction ❤

Thank you so much for your comment! You’ve captured so much of what makes Michael such a fascinating and multi-dimensional person. It’s true-his comments about groupies in that Ebony Jet interview really highlighted his values and how different he was from the norm, especially compared to what he saw growing up. His preference for class and simplicity shows such a sweet and grounded side of him. That private tape story about holding hands being magical is just so Michael-pure and heartfelt. ❤
And you’re absolutely right about the contrast between his stage presence and off-stage demeanor. On stage, he was a force of nature-energetic, confident, and electric. But in interviews, his shyness and calmness were so endearing. It’s amazing how he could switch so seamlessly, almost as if performing was his true way of expressing himself. It’s no wonder he always said he felt most free on stage.
Thanks for sharing your insights and sweet memories of Michael. We’re so glad you enjoyed the reaction! ❤🎶

I did respond more before, but I’m still getting used to getting back to the swing of things of editing + working more now and just taking care of our little one and maintaining the household. Not that he doesn’t do that either, but we find that he’s just faster at responding. I’m a bit of a slow poke🤣
But we do sometimes spend an evening of both responding and sitting down to read the comments together and until now, we’re still in awe that people even still comments to us! 🥰

Michael himself mention this song and bellie Jean he wrote about groupies that he saw as a child hovering around lot of pop singers and bands. He said that he does not like using word groupies so he establish individual character so not to stereotype women

Haha I get what she means by "too adult" Michael didn't make this type of song with this kind of lyrics often, but he needed to show just how dirty she and groupies are 😂😂 but if you think this is dirty wait til you hear Superfly Sister it's another song with dirty lyrics but he is actually criticizing how some people seem to value sex over love, which is a great message in my opinion, you should react to that one too!

You need to react to the directors cut of dirty Diana it’s got more meaning to it but it’s really good check it out ……..or you should react to captain eo a Michael jackson attraction that was in the Disneyland/Disney world parks back in the 80’s but it’s out to the public….,,.or moonwalker or Michael Jackson’s ghost (full version)

    • @honey.brown.popcultered

Thank you for the awesome suggestions! The director’s cut of Dirty Diana sounds incredible-I’d love to see how it adds more depth and meaning to an already iconic video. Definitely putting that on the list!
Captain EO is such a legendary piece of MJ history. A collaboration with Disney and Francis Ford Coppola? That’s pure magic. And of course, Moonwalker and the full version of Ghosts are absolute must-watches for any MJ fan-they showcase his artistry and creativity in such unique ways.
Thanks for the recommendations! We’ll definitely look into reacting to these gems. Stay tuned! 🎶✨
