  • In this episode I take a look at the folklore of three of the Corvid family... the fascinating Crows, Rooks and Ravens, focusing on European mythology. Among other things I talk about The Morrigan the battle goddess of Celtic Mythology, about Huginn and Muninn and their relationship with Odin, why was Floki called Raven Floki? And their association with the Romano Greek gods. We also learn about the social relationships we have with these beautiful birds, and the little local folk lore magic that they bring into our lives.

2:40 The Crow. Celtic Folklore. The Morrigan. Cuchulain. Greek Mythology. A Fairytale from Poland. A Tale from Scotland. Crows in Witchcraft. Superstitions.
8:50 The Rook. Celtic Folklore. The Rookeries. Easter Folklore. Weather Prediction & Superstition. Good & Bad Omens. Judgement in Rook Society.

I wouldn't worry about your cats harming your crow or raven friends. They will quickly teach the kitties to respect them. Buy a big bag of unsalted in the shell peanuts and let the birds see you leave a dozen or so in a special spot. Do this three times a week for a few months. The real life cartoon that will ensue between the birds, squirrels and cats will become a real spectacle. You may want to watch the TH-cam, "The girl who gets gifts from birds". CHEERS !

The day my mother passed in her bed at home i walked outside and the pear tree right outside her window was slam full of blackbirds. I think they were ravens because they were larger than i think crows are. They were really vocal and i will never forget it. In all my years of living there i don't recall seeing that many ravens or crows in the pear tree. A few years later her sister was on her deathbed and as i was standing right by a bush next to the pear tree a baby owl was looking at me nearly face to face as i turned around. The owl never moved or flew away and it was broad daylight at the time. She ended up passing a few days later.

Here is something that happened on my property. The large group of crows would make loud noises from time to time and I would light incense sticks and place them around my house. After they had burned for a while the crows would calm down. I took this as sign something bad was around. After a couple of years the crows started to get mean by attacking and stealing the robin eggs etc. The next year red tail hawks moved in and watch them, and disciplined them any time they where up to no good. When the crows formed smaller groups around the town and settled down the red tailed hawks moved on. I have never had that many crows return to my property since.

I used to go walking with my dog out in the country, and when we’d get to this one house, they had a little dog that used to go crazy barking at my big dog. There were 3 ravens that would sit on the power lines over the yipping little dog, and one of them would “bark” just like the dog, then all of the ravens would just crack up laughing. They were actually making fun of that tiny dog and how ridiculous it was. It was then that I realized just how smart they were, and this wasn’t a one time occurrence. They’d see me coming from quite a ways and fly over to the power lines to watch my dog and me walk past, so they could make fun of the little dog.
