  • Hear from some of the world's most successful dyslexics including Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Chris Robshaw, and Maggie Aderin-Pocock about dyslexic strengths and thinking skills so you can really understand what dyslexia is and why we should celebrate it.
    About Made By Dyslexia:
We’re a global charity led by successful dyslexics. Our purpose is to help the world properly understand, value and support dyslexia. We believe in the game-changing power of dyslexic thinking. After all, everything from the light bulb to the iPhone was invented by dyslexic thinkers. In 2020 we launched “Connect The Spots”, a global training and advocacy programme to level the playing-field so every dyslexic child can achieve their potential.
To achieve this we have one single minded mission: to train every teacher worldwide in the next five years to spot, support and empower every dyslexic child.

This is amazing. It took me 33 years to understand what dyslexia is and what it meant. It wasn't a setback, but instead a gift.

True, teacher really need to be educated to recognise individuals with dyslexia. I am 20 years old, studying at university, and recently I've been diagnosed with dyslexia. I have always found spelling very difficult, only reads what i have to read, and hate reading loud, have difficult expressing my ideas both in written and when talking. Becoz of these things, my self esteem and self confidence is so low that is is having a huge impact in every aspect of my life. I don't really talk becoz of the fear of confusing people or not saying words properly when talking. If teachers are educated to recognise students with undiagnosed dyslexia or other learning difficulties, it would increase the likelihood of early diagnosis and ensuring that children who required support will get it as soon as possible which can reduce the likelihood of developing low self-esteem, anxieties etc.

I really feel for you. My teachers are judging me because I have low quizzes, and most of them are wrong because of my spelling. I feel that I am left behind; I can't explain my thoughts properly; I always lose focus on everything; I can't concentrate in class; and no one understands me because I am different from others, and I always wish to find someone who can understand me, somewhere that I really belong. Btw, I'm 20 and undiagnosed dyslexic but I really feel that I’m one of you

I am a 73 year old dyslexic but I didn't discover I was dyslexic until I was in my late 50s. I always read slowly but didn't realize I was slow until grade 6 when we took a new speed reading course. I realized I was much slower than others at reading but I was much better than others at a lot of other things and I had no real problems other than I loved to watch the birds flying in the school yard outside the window, where I was always daydreaming about flying and at 8 years old I was building complex flying model airplanes. Oops! Slight segway there. (Thank God for spell checkers!) Even my slow reading didn't prevent me from getting straight "A"s in Math, Physics and Chemistry but the only course I ever failed was "Accounting 11." I had no problem with Higher Mathematics but Accounting was complete arithmetic and it is not that I can't do arithmetic, if I check it half a dozen times to eliminate all the simple mistakes or transposed numbers or... as long as I can use a computer or adding machine to do the mechanical stuff and save a lot of time. There I go again. What I'm trying to get at is, when I went to the local technical college to study Computers and Robotics they gave a study skills assessment to see if we could handle the material. To the confounding of my instructor, he told me that I had a reading speed below that of the 30 percentile but my comprehension was up above the 95 percentile. We read slowly because we get more out of what we read. If we read at the same speed as normal people, we wouldn't know any more than they do. It is part and parcel of what we are and without it we wouldn't be so brilliant. Yes, it takes us longer to read and I thank God that they taught us Phonetics but when we are done, we know far more than the other 90% of the population. Dyslexia is a gift!

I still get embarrassed if I’ve made a mistake with my spelling even now at 67 and left handed to, I hated school it was hell for me, spelling and using ink pens and smearing what writing I did all over the paper. And when it came to exams not able to read or write down something you know was so isolating for me.

I felt that almost gave up in high school. Like I almost failed a class cause I said I didn’t feel comfortable reading my poem out loud, teacher said ok you fail the assignment cause that’s not fair to others. I wish he was taught the irony in that statement.

And writeing I often add an e before a y. Or I miss letters like a h. Duh I just hate my dyalexia and I'm insecure about it.

Love this. As a dyslexic, I agree our brains are wired differently and in many ways for the better. The problem is not that I am dyslexic, the problem is, they are not! They lack imagination and fundamental understanding of the world around them. I'm 73 years old and I know from from personal experience, that it doesn't matter what I do, whether I show people 3-D renderings, either computer produced or hand drawn or show fundamental Physics and/or give a full verbal description of what I do so people can actually understand it, when I say I have designed the most efficient heat engine that has ever or will ever be designed, no one believes me. They don't even trust their own understanding.
In spite of the fact that I can prove, Mathematically, every word I say, to anyone willing to listen, when I tell people that Einstein was a shmuck and a dupe and his theories were pure delirium, no one believes me. I really do live on another planet!

Sounds to me like it's not a learning disorder, but a teaching disorder. There are plenty of cultures where it doesn't exist because they are taught to read and write differently, based more so on phonic sounds rather than flashcards. Just food for thought. But then I don't have dyslexia so I have no idea what they mean by thinking differently. Unless you mean not restricted to absorbing information and believing it because it's taught, in which case that's nothing to do with dyslexia, you just didn't buy into the system because you see beyond societal expectations. There are plenty of twats with dyslexia too so I'm not convinced it gives empathy.. Thoughts?
