Larry, I'm a numbers geek myself (being a retired accountant could be a clue) and I'm happy to say that multiplying things that seem small incrementally across a year can be a huge deal. My favorite "unexpected" savings came with cancelling my trash/recycling pick-up service ($80 per quarter) and instead using punch tickets at $1 per bag that I take myself to a drop-off point. It's clean, well-run and I don't have to struggle to move giant bins down a 150' driveway. I typically use 1 punch per week (1 bag of trash - recycling is free) so I spend $4-5 per month or $50 per year instead of $320. Life is good!

Oh, I wanted to mention that while we have always cooked 95% of our meals at home, I never gave much thought to the cost of running my oven. I really hate microwaves and still don't use mine for anything but cooking frozen vegetables. But what I did do is start making more in my crockpot. My well loved and heavily used cast iron has been shooting me dirty looks from the shelves though.

I save money by not spending. I have made it clear to family and friends that i do not celebrate commercial occassions. If i want to buy someone a present it happens anytime of the year. This personalises each present to each person. It also means i am thinking of that person to that item. Share my love. I have saved so much money. No christmas, no easter, no birthdays. NO STRESS. I am not a material type person and i am a minalist without trying. I do not go without anything. I am debt free and pay cash for everything.

Our family loves leftovers. Where we live in Canada prices of food have drastically gone up. My husband takes lunches from home and I'll make a larger meal in order for him to have leftovers.
My family will go for drives down to the beach and often times at the end of the season the more well off people will put great items out to the curb. My dad was able to pick up some great lawn chairs in excellent condition. The woman actually came running out and gave my dad matching cushions for them as well. All in wonderful condition.

My husband is a general contractor and he always takes leftovers for lunch. He has an insulated lunchbox and he keeps a microwave in his truck to heat it up. He plugs into the generator at the job site and heats his food up. :) Also, I make Gatorade for him instead of buying it which saves us a lot of money. Our grocery budget is 200 mo for a family of 3 and that includes going to a restaurant once a month. We are stocked up approx 3 mo ahead so we are always just restocking our pantry and freezer, plus we have a large greenhouse and garden spaces to grow our food to save even more money. For context, we are near Osage Beach, MO.

Gratitude is a wonderful antidote for wanting. My old pastor used to say, "You are just trying to fill that God-sized hole inside you," and we try to do it with wanting or buying or other bad habits. But really, you can be totally satisfied (Godliness with contentment is great gain. 1 Timothy 6:6 ) if you just are happy for what you have and fill that hole with God.

I've been known to haggle down even those extremely discounted bin items.
Of course I eat leftovers! I can't imagine not eating them.
For truckers, there's a small compact cooler available and a small compact food heater available, too.
I'm not on a free cycle sort of site, but I have a friend who is. She showed up once to my door with a free dishwasher! How wonderful was that!
    I remember "The Parade."
Oh my goodness! There are so many more than 5 things I'm thankful for! I haven't felt deprived since I was a teenager and my parents wouldn't spring for me to shop at expensive stores, like my classmates, for expensive clothes and shoes. Now, I attribute that to making me unique, creative, responsible and resourceful....and I'm thankful for that. I've always had an abundance mindset, even during periods of unemployment and student life (except those teen years!). My grandmother worked for the post office her whole working life (and only missed 6 days of works in those decades--once when she was in the hospital!) She'd get a nickel an hour raise, but her hours would be cut by 3 a week...or something like that. She was very definitely living under the median! But she always had plenty...enough to share with her less fortunate friends and neighbors. I found out she fed several extremely poor people in her neighborhood. She was undoubtedly the happiest person I've ever known! No sense of deprivation with her! Maybe that's where I got my abundance mindset from!
Enjoyed today's vid...and liked hearing Larry's story. Don't frequently hear stories from him (I love your stories, too, Hope!).
Love and appreciation to both of you! ❤

The item that you can heat up food, looks like a black plastic lunchbox and has a cigarette lighter cord and that was originally designed for truckers, is sold at major truck stops such as Love's or Pilot for about $25 bucks. You can heat up food, or, as my buddy does in his truck, cook food such as pasta. A trick my ex-father in law taught me to cook food in the car is to wrap it in aluminum foil and place it on your engine block on longer drives. Another trick to heat up food is to place your food container on your dashboard in the sun, especially in cold weather. In fall and winter just turn your defroster on high and viola hot food. In summertime, the sun will heat it quite well through your windshield.

I can't help feeling that I deserve to live a rich life, but it's not going to happen if I'm not vigilant. Like you, I never pay full price for anything if I can help it. I gave up meat and started making my own laundry detergent about eight years ago, then all my cleaning solutions and personal care products (lip balm, body butter, facial toner, deodorant, etc.). Household goods, designer clothing, and luxury gift items come from thrift stores and estate sales. A few years ago, for the sake of the environment, I decided it was time to give up single use paper products. I'm the matriarch of the family, and the money I've saved all these years has just bankrolled a luxury resort vacation for us all at Disneyland (I did get a 10% off deal, but that probably goes without saying). Other people live with expensive fun every day, but I believe that kind of fun should be a treat, not a way of life. FYI ... I'm 72 years old and have lived quite comfortably on a poverty-level Social Security income since I lost my career and retirement investments in The Crash of 2008.

I appreciate your wisdom. I am not from the US and I realize some of the ways you guys use coupons to save tons of money on food etc just doesn’t happen in our country. There are never coupons available on food items only health and beauty products. If I lived in the States I’m sure I could cut my grocery bill in half too. It’s fun listening to all your tips and tricks though. I agree that there’s no need to buy new. You can can find perfectly nice products for half the cost by buying used. You guys are a neat couple. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Leftovers are the best, we love them and pack lunches most days of the week. Here in Sweden all children get free school lunches (if you by free means paid by taxes of course) all through college. One thing we’ve always done with our children is a summer bucketlist, the things have to be free or cheap (like buy an icecream), I think that makes all of us appriciate the free or cheap things even more. My children are both teenagers and things they wrote this year was eating strawberries, swim in 5 new to us lakes and eat food. Easy and cheap and satisfying 🙂🤑

I had a very small record collection. Instead of buying records I would record the music from the radio on my older brother's reel-to-reel tape recorder. I ended up completely wearing out his old machine. Later I switched to cassette. Recently I've recorded digitally and made CDs from them. If I purchase music (CDs) it's usually from a thrift store. There are so many ways to save money.

Our town and surrounding towns have Facebook Freecycle where people post what they don’t want anymore. If you are interested in the item you say interested (especially if you are the first one to reply) then dm the owner. If you are second you would say interested next so if the first person didn’t want it you may have a chance to get it.

Something mentally happened to me after the death of my son being in my kitchen cooking is just simply not the same I hate it it's a chore I used to love cooking. He was my little side kick. My other son told me my food doesn't even taste the same anymore. I know I can save money and I've never ate out this much in my life. I guess I have one more thing to beat myself up over 😭😭😭 I wish I could find the magic trick the magic cookbook to get myself back.

The same thing happened to my Mom after my Father passed away. Going to the supermarket and cooking was too much of an emotional struggle because the food reminded her of her loss. Please know that you are not alone in this. Many, many people struggle this way after the death of a loved one. I saw my Mom have a happy marriage for nearly 50 years and afterwards, shopping at the supermarket and cooking were a struggle. I am so sorry about your son.

We have dons et recup en Bretagne groups, give and take groups, on marketplace, there’s often items à donner so just to give away. We have three years wood stored and we had some trees down and gave the wood away that way. We use multiplication all the time, we’ve saved thousands over the year by doing this. Eating out looks affordable here but if we had lunch out one a week at 30€ for the two of us, then that’s 1560€ a year.

@@UndertheMedian Funny story, her dad called her one day and said he was passing through the city we were in for college, he'd be there in 15 minutes. She invited me to go meet her dad and see his truck. I said sure. So he pulls his huge truck into the college parking lot and two girls go into the cab of the truck. Security came out to check on us. They had no idea that it was her dad, I'm sure they thought something more sinister was going on! 😬 We were in Bible college! That thought had never crossed my mind that it might look bad.
