I’d normally roll my eyes at “song sequels,” but all of the unforgivens hold their own. And I’m especially a fan of death magnetic. Legit metal after a few clunkers.
Load and Reload weren't meant to be heavy. St Anger is a bit hit and miss but they weren't trying to be thrash. Death Magnetic was more of a return to thrash.
This album has some of Metallica’s best instrumental work ever. This is a great example of it, but the blue ribbon winner is Suicide & Redemption. Simply amazing!
In my mind, Suicide and Redemption is almost a musical coda to the Unforgivens, so much of S&R uses almost every trick they've ever shown. I dont'nt really know exactly why I feel this, but there you go. 8)
Metallica is not afraid to change their style and do what they want. That’s what makes them so great and why they’ve lasted so long. Keeps it interesting and shows how much talent they have. You should check out their S&M stuff, when they played with a symphony. 😊 You should check out some of the live videos from their M72 tour.
I enjoyed S@M more as an idea but the execution was kind of spotty. James voice just wasn’t it on that album. Outlaw Torn and No Leaf Clover are🔥 though.
I wish it had Kirk's tone from Black album, but it is insanely good. People don't even know/talk about it (also Friend of Misery The God That Failed solos - so DAMN good)
death magnetic is a great album...you should listen to the day that never comes...the version from Nimes 2009...beautiful song and a killer performance
Indeed it is a great album for the songs themselves. However the brickwall compression and digital clipping from the "loudness war" of the time makes me want to puke. 🤮
@jonathanmarceau5684 yep, the mastering etc of this album was unforgiveable... and dare I say that even st anger would have sounded so much better with old school mastering and if they borrowed someone elses instruments for the recording 😅
This album has a couple of gems: “All Nightmare Long” “The Day That Never Comes” But the best collection from this era comes from the album that follows (Hardwired… to Self-Destruct): “Halo on Fire” “Atlas, Rise!” “Spit Out the Bone” “Moth into Flame”
Wow!!! My first time listening to this aong too!! Amazing!!! The Unforgiven came out when I was about 16yo. I'm 47 now. And it gave me the same chills!
As a 54 yr old male from a small town in the state of Idaho US, I heard these guys in my sophomore yr high school 1985 and thought I prefer their older stuff, I have NEVER not enjoyed a song. Keep doing them all as of a lover of music you won’t be disappointed. I have seen them live 12 times starting as late back as master of puppets tour. Going to Seattle in August to see them again for two nights. Definitely a must before they are done. Thanks for continuing the journey and please forget the naysayer’s. .
Die hard fan of Metallica for 30 years... And I am not ashamed to say that I think Unforgiven III is their best song. At least for me... My second favourite is Leper Messiah, just for reference.
Easiest way to think about the trilogy First one is feeling like those around you in general have wronged you Second is feeling like you've been wronged in a relationship Third is more obviously not being able to forgive yourself for wronging others or even yourself Each one is definitely going to speak to everyone different based on life experiences
A lot of people trash Death Magnetic for the production, but this was really the album that got me hooked forever on the band. This song in particular spoke to me at the time. And when you understand the message of all three Unforgivens, it just hits a lot harder. Great reactions, BRUV! 👊🏻
If you're going down the rabbit hole of Death Magnetic, you're in for a treat. That Was Just Your Life and The Day That Never Comes are absolute bangers.
I completely understand and agree with what you said at the end about listening to Metallica now and how different it is from being there when they started changing their style a few times over the years. We are similar age I think - I'm 24 - and I started listening to Metallica when I was around 12-13 yo, so I have a similar percepction of their music and style on different albums. Each of them has something special about them and how it influenced me. Anyway, Metallica is my all time favourite band till this day and I'm glad that you are enjoying your journey 🖤🤘
Here's another suggestion by a band I believe you've reacted to before and seemed to enjoy their tunes. So, I thought I'd suggest another song, if interested. "Scorpions -Send Me An Angel (VEVO)" (by the channel: Scorpions) --This song by the German rock band Scorpions is from their eleventh studio album called "Crazy World" released in 1990. This power ballad was composed by Rudolf Schenker and written by Klaus Meine and became one of the albums most popular songs. And as always, I enjoyed rocking with you. Thanks for sharing. peace out~
As a fan since Ride the Lightning was the latest album from Metallica, I would have to say that this is my favorite of the trilogy. Additionally I will add that this is their greatest composition. Their debut album is still my favorite but this track will grow on you, the older you get, the more significant the lyrics become. Love you, love what you're doing. Keep it up laddie.
another genuine react from you man !!!! you're really into metallica, for sure !!!! for me personally, i'm stuck in 1992. i cant get into their more recent stuff at all, especially since st anger.....
Unforgiven I - Black Album (1991) Unforgiven II - Reload (1997) Unforgiven III - Death Magnetic (2008) It's difficult to pick my favourite, at one point years ago it was II, then I. But after listening again I honestly think III may be it, the progression in this song is outstanding, incredible Kirk solo, and James vocals age so well and you can hear the maturity in the songwriting and lyrics that this is them later in life.
I remember the first time i heard this one. My neighbor let me listen to his copy and i vividly remember telling him "if there was one copy of death magnetic at a store left...i would legit fight someone over it lol." This song did it....the whole album is a masterpiece but this is the best one imo.
This has been my favorite of the trilogy for many many years. The whole idea of self forgiveness is so much more poignant to me than the other perspectives of forgiveness. James’ lyrics are at peak performance.
man! when I heard this album in 2008 I had a small panic attack! I could not believe the songs I was listening to were made by the same guys so much later in their career! and yet they prove me wrong again and again each time! this one was crazy! the drumming reminds me of the first one! solo is impeccable! reaction was awesome! keep having fun!🔥🤘🤩
They also recorded an album years ago of their great metal hits with the san fransisco symphony. Us fans were face slapped by the shock. But the music they write does fit into classical category so it makes sense.
It wasn’t such a surprise. Cliff’s love of classical music was well known and before he died he’d wanted to do something like this Effectively, it was a tribute to him
As much as I love the first one, this is my favorite of the three. I feel bad for people who couldn't move on after the first four albums. I've only been truly disappointed by one album and even that one has a few high points worth checking out.
For the life of me I can't understand the people that insist that Metallica hasn't done anything good since AJFA or the Black Album. To each his own, though. My favorites are still the first 3, with Cliff, but Death Magnetic is straight up bangers from beginning to end! Broken, Beat and Scarred is a really good one to check out!
It's a little goofy, the riff at 4:03 is one of my favorites, but I really don't feel like they utilized the structure of this song to the potential that we all know they have, I feel like Kirk has become a Blues guitarist, and I miss the more melodic solos that you hear on tracks like Disposable Heroes. You need to do some of the Cover Metallica's has done of other bands, The Wait, Killing Time, Am I evil, So What , Helpless , Breadfan and Last Caress/ Green Hell
Good morning MB. I missed a few days. I'm playing catch-up for Mom. She'll be home Monday. Dad's in bad condition. Me & Ry have been all week with him & mom. Hope you're well. Ttys 💕Nikki
When James screams "Why can't I forgive me?", right before the solo, I break into goosebumps every time! So powerful!
This is actually my favorite of the three. Love the piano opening. “How can I be lost when I’ve got nowhere to go?” is SUCH a relatable line.
I’d normally roll my eyes at “song sequels,” but all of the unforgivens hold their own. And I’m especially a fan of death magnetic. Legit metal after a few clunkers.
If you're referring to Load and Reload as "clunkers" you need to give them another listen. Some of their best work imo.
@@Leafgreen1976 Re-Load more than Load, but mostly St Anger, which I've TRIED to appreciate...just...no.
They are all clunkers since the black album, except Death Magnetic. They need TRT treatments, which is why most metal bands get softer as they age
Load and Reload weren't meant to be heavy.
St Anger is a bit hit and miss but they weren't trying to be thrash.
Death Magnetic was more of a return to thrash.
I have death magneticnin their top 5 albums easy
This album has some of Metallica’s best instrumental work ever. This is a great example of it, but the blue ribbon winner is Suicide & Redemption. Simply amazing!

James’ voice has aged like a fine wine. I love his voice now.
There was a period after he came out of rehab, in St Anger, I thought it was lost, but he found his mojo again, and sounds great in 72 Seasons again.
Death Magnetic did not leave my car’s cd player for YEARS bro
sad

It's a shame they get so much hate for it. Always bugs me. Artists shouldn't keep themselves in a box.
@@cyberdemon1702 never heard anyone criticise James' vocals on S&M! he sounds incredible.
@@matthewlloyd1703 he hits the notes but there is no grit or growl in it IMO
i fucking love the unforgiven III solo 😭😭
And the rhythm guitar behind it makes it so much better.
Might be the best god damn solo
I wish it had Kirk's tone from Black album, but it is insanely good. People don't even know/talk about it (also Friend of Misery The God That Failed solos - so DAMN good)
“How can I be lost if I’ve got nowhere to go?” My most fave lyric ever in a song, man.
Fun fact: at 1:46 a French horn comes in. It was a French horn that opened the first two Unforgiven songs.
You can add the day that never comes to your playlist next , trust me
🤘🏽🔥🎸
Hell yes
I have suggested "The day that never comes" to our mate so many times, but he just won't listen to me 😢😢😢
@@djogicdzenan4412 I'm sure he'll get round to it at some point

Fun fact, that's actually James playing the Piano in the beginning
Supposedly when he was young, his parents put him in piano lessons and he hated it. lol
yeah he's such a talented musician
I was wondering about that as I watched this, thanks.
that intro is some Ennio Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold" vibes.. I think it's an homage. That track has been Metallica's intro for live shows forever.

May I add that the S&M2 Metallica Live performance of this song is just a full blown orchestra and James singing is awesome and worth a listen.
"Bleeding me" is a masterpiece and I'll die on that hill🤘
This album is from 2008 and is absolutely awesome. A true masterpiece.
I missed it!!! Oh no - where the hell was I? I was lucky enough to see them live on their black tour - goodness me, what a show!
Death Magnetic is so underrated. In my top 4
Now the trilogy is complete! Can't wait for this reaction!🤘
Mama said Jeff's her Tallica buddy!❤
You should react to James doing this song on S&M 2 just him and the orchestra amazing 👊🏻🤘🏻

The day that never comes. Epic
Yeeeeesssss 🤘🏽
It's kinda like One II. (The day that never comes) Was quite surprised when it came out.. Only good song since Black
The version in San Francisco with the orchestra Is special...
Death Magnetic is THE MOST underrated Metallica Album. By Far.
This album has a couple of gems:
“All Nightmare Long”
“The Day That Never Comes”
But the best collection from this era comes from the album that follows (Hardwired… to Self-Destruct):
“Halo on Fire”
“Atlas, Rise!”
“Spit Out the Bone”
“Moth into Flame”
