  • Directed by George Sidney, Quicker 'n a Wink introduces MIT Professor Harold "Doc" Edgerton who demonstrates strobe photography. This film allows us to see what happens at speeds too fast to be discerned by the naked eye. Some well-known examples include a flying bullet that shatters a light bulb, the motion of a hummingbird's wings, a cat lapping milk, and falling liquid drops. A Hollywood hit, Quicker 'n a Wink won an Academy Award for Best One-Reel Short. Courtesy of MIT Museum. 1940. MIT Museum Collections.

Wonderful video from Doc Edgerton - thanks for putting this online.
Many years ago, my friends and I were wandering down strobe alley when Doc came out and pulled us into his lab. He showed us how to see a bullet shoot through a card using our own eyes. All we had to do was sit still for a few minutes in the dark, and when the bullet shot through the card, the strobe flashed leaving an image of the event on our retinas.
He was a great man - I hope to see more of his videos online.

This is what I went to college for. MATC in Milwaukee offered it in the 1970s. Photography was one half. Electronics was the other half. And a few liberal arts for good measure. Now I am a programmer and I use similar principals and methods to take snapshots of data writing programs as my camera.

The awesome cat fact was eclipsed immediately by the high speed old-skool misogyny. Woo woo.
