his body is contorting because he is the white swan in the classic ballet "black swan" which the song is named after. read the theories below but that is the explanation for the dance lol.
This is the official press release explaining Black Swan: “This song sees BTS dive deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the Black Swan within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical retaliation that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself.”
bts deserves an APOLOGY from everyone who's ever insinuated that their music is manufactured and less-than just because they are singing in a language that you don't even make an effort to understand!!!
(cr. @doolsetbangtan)"The dancer dies twice ---Once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful", in the track it contains BTS's fear of no longer being able to stand on the stage as an artist. Through the black swan, BTS says, that if they, (or as they) continue to do music, they will face their first death if the music they make fails to touch them or make them excited The song is about their fear of losing the passion they have for making music. However, everytime that happens they hear the voice of themselves deep inside, they face the Black Swan in them and realize, ironically, music is all they have. Through the mature self-reflecting lyrics, they convey it's confession as an artist who learned what music means to self.
But it's also them embracing their passion...in the mv, The dancers wearing black are like the shadow of the main dancer and they are trying to stop him from leaving the light (like in interlude: shadow) yet the main dancer tries to fight them and ends up with the shadows following him..he controls the shadows and is embracing them...it is a part of him. BTS are embracing their passion.
I did check it out. And gave you a like. I spotted Kandi And Todd at the table eating. 😀 I was up at 2am for this single. Btw I love it when you keep pausing.
When the lead dancer slapped himself on the back in the beginning i perked up and focused lol. I took that to be like "pay attention cause we bout to do some shit right now" and i was like "oh ok yes mr dancer dude", and then they did their thang lol. It was great.
This resonates so much with their comeback trailer: SHADOW. Your shadow will always follow you & be part of you. Either you allow it to grow so big & let it swallow you whole OR make peace with yourself and accept that it's part of you. Depending on your decision, the shadow is there to drag you down or lift you up. This beautiful video piece was able to portray that through these amazing dancers. The inner conflict within ourselves is portrayed beautifully here. 😱😭👍 That's what I got from it. I can't with BTS anymore. They're completely on a whole different level in terms of their music and creativity yet takes ARMY to a whole new level through art & dance. 😱😭👍💙 #ARMYsince2014
Additionally, there is an official explanation of the meaning of the song posted that explains that this song represents the potential death of BTS's artistic creativity and meaning from the immense pressures of global fame. It's a snapshot of their most vulnerable moments (when they were considering disbanding in early 2018) that they thankfully overcame. But the Jungian themes are very present in the original movie "Black Swan" that they took the name of their song from so the persona/shadow/ego themes are definitely mixed in their somewhere. It's BTS - there are a million layers! Found the statement from Big Hit: "As they’re getting deeper and deeper being in a music industry as a musician they face the fear thinking music possibly can no longer inspire or move them. However the moment they face the Black Swan within them they realize there’s solely music inside of them that they do. It’s a confession as an artist how and what significance music brings and shaped them which is portrayed through mature and thought-provoking autobiographical lyrics. Black Swan is in the category of Cloud Rap or Emo hip hop which exudes dreamy vibe, combined of trap drum beat, sentimental lo-fi melody of guitar and catchy hook."
@@slightlyaskew5105 Thank you for the additional information. BTS are indeed true artists inspiring so many through art & music. They have so many different layers to them. I'm super excited for their new album yet I feel sadness too. 😭💙
Kito he's portraying a "Swan." Jimin does the same things when he contemporary dances. This is for the visuals, go to Spotify to stream the lyrics and sound.🕺🎶🎤👑
Kito I love your reactions. You are delirious at 5am!!!! "I gotta go watch animal planet".... You are going to love it so much more once you watch the lyrics. The radio version is different nd very cool!!
Kito struggling. “Why nobody helping me?” Poor baby. He’s portraying a swan. He captured a swans movement on point; The struggle and conquering (of the shadows)...
Yo Kito, I was up at 4am when that song dropped and when that dude slapped his own back for some reason I died laughing right at the beginning. I haven’t seen anyone else mention the back slap except for you 😂 when you mentioned it, I laughed all over again.
The dancing was Beautiful! The instrumental Tears at your soul! The lyrics were Serious! That’s BTS for you right there! True Artists! Thank you Kito for being up early for us to share this masterpiece!
Everyone is talking about the audio version but can we stop for a minute and appreciate these incredible dancers. They portrayed bts' emotions perfectly. The feeling of them thinking they lost their love towards music/art and confronting their demons/shadow to find themselves again and remembering that music and art is their passion, their everything. This is a masterpiece.
Hey Kito, this version and MV will appeal to anyone who is passionate about "The Arts" and in particular expression through dance but that is not everyone's cup of tea! They have very cleverly done a Spotify version which will appeal to a broader audience, well done Big Hit and BTS (whoever came up with the idea).
Kito!! There's a SPOTIFY version of this song!! Love both versions cuz it gives you different moods. Definitely listen to it when you get a chance. 😁👍💙
Kito, I fee the pain. I woke up at 1:55 this morning to watch it when it dropped at 2 my time. And a girl is struggling to work now because I couldn’t sleep after that. 😂 The performance is so beautiful, I was captivated. Then I listened to the song only on Spotify and was blown away by the vocals. Then I watched the video again with captions on and was just deeply moved by the lyrics and how open they were with us about their fears. How can I sleep after that???
Listen to the studio version! It’s on Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming platforms. You can also purchase it for download now. There is a lyric video so you can pay attention to the lyrics better while listening to the studio version.
Please don’t get sick! Getting up so early and not sleeping. Don’t burn out!. Love this song. I also checked it on Spotify and the color lyrics in TH-cam....dark and beautiful song, deep!
You are cracking me up 😂 I see the contortion as a physical representation of dealing with the inside. Some of it is representative of wings. The wings we give them also are full of shadows. Fears. Losing a part of yourself is scary. You can see how the swan was caged and trying to break free. Then it fought the shadows and decided to go deeper. To explore his fears. Before that he had to make sure he was ok. There is some of that contortion you see again. Once in the bottom floor you can see the relationship between him and his wings changed. But yea. The contortion is a representation of that internal battle I think
I had to watch the MN video multiple times to really appreciate it. I didn’t really feel this version of the song either but found the Spotify version and am digging it.
Kito. You buring that stick at both ends!. You pulled an all nighter! Lol. That black swan was beautiful. Now I have to look at lyrics. I checked out the video for the event. Man u and TI can be brothers. Thanks fam.
Kito this dance is beautiful. The music and the lyrics reflects how BTS feels that they may lose the enthusiasm and love of performing on stage. It's an inner conflict that each artist, whether it song, dance, song writing, singing , etc. It's self reflections about doing what you love have become more work and not fun anymore. This is very deep and gives you a lot to think about. Please listen to the Spotify version as well. The more you listen to this song the better understanding you will get out of it. Loved your reaction. Thanks Fam.
My take - the shadows are holding him back at first, goes thru a process of tension & fighting, eventually acceptance and the shadows became part of what helped the individual to soar 💜
I saw some weird theories about this being a 'goodbye' song on TH-cam and TBH as mad as it might make the people who agree; its pretty annoying to see because thats really just underselling this whole songs meaning. Its about losing your love or passion for the things you love, the things that are a part of you because it becomes an obligation. And then searching up Black Swan you get "stands for your deep inner mysteries that are desperate for a creative expression to be set free. " I wish people would stop talking about it and just appreciate the art. There is a lot to look into here but thats just not it.
Listen to Spotify version! React to Spotify version! ✨From BIGHIT article & translated by choi_bts2 on Twitter: The more they do music they are in fear that the music can’t touch and make them excited anymore. But the moment when they face Black Swan in their deep inner side, ironically they realize they have only music. It’s a confession of what music means for them as artists.
He's a white swan fighting off the other black swan! That's what i got🤷♀️ This is so art..👌 Oh n there's a 2nd version of this song! Love it!💜Love u BTS!💜 Amazing n so much growth n so much quality with everything they put out.
The dancer is the Black Swan, his movements are depicting those of a Swan. The song is talking about an artist's greatest fear, the loss of passion for their craft. The first half is about that fear and how it can happen at any moment. Thus in the first part of the dance, we see the dancer being one with the others, then comes a struggle where he tries to run from them. As he tries to run from his fears. In the second part of the song, BTS comes to realize that their art is in them, that they can't lose something they'll always have. They come to understand that they have the power to hold on to that passion as long or as short as they choose to. Once they accepted that there will be fears and they can't run from them, they were able to fly. Hence the dancer going back to his fold and ultimately leading them as they soar into the sky. (This is my take on it... it plays off of Yoongi's Shadow Interlude)
GahDAMN Kito! You up HELLA early!! But...so was I so I can't really talk. I know everyone has already laid out their explanations but being ARMY I can't help but toss mine out there too. A few years back there was an Oscar winning movie with the same title starring Natalie Portman. The story shows her as a young ballerina trying to get the starring role in which she had to dance two parts: one the innocent and pure white swan, which she was already well suited for, but the other role was the Black Swan. A dark version more suited to an edgy and borderline evil persona. The director of her company pushed her to her limits to try to bring out the dark swan side of herself to embody the role fully because she just wasn't reaching the level. She went so far into trying to fit the role that she went crazy, and when she finally snapped she had finally reached the part of herself that she needed to fully become the Black Swan. Her performance was PERFECT, but the price she paid was that it was both her BEST and her LAST performance. BTS is always putting layers of meaning into their art. So the title itself resonated with me by the way it connected with Suga's Shadow Interlude. They know the darkness (Shadow) is within them, they fear it, but they also need it. Because they will never be COMPLETE as people or as artists without it. So they are battling with the idea of "Do I embrace it and give in to darkness" or "Do I shun it and try to ascend without giving in". To me, and this is literally just me cuz I do the most when it comes to analyzing things, The Black Swan represents the fear that once they reach the pinnacle, once they have finally fully balanced their PERSONA with their SHADOW, that they have reached the pinnacle. Once they reach the very top, it's all over, and they'll have to fall just as far as they climbed. So when RM said "What if that moment is RIGHT NOW?" It hit me like a ton of bricks. It's like he's asking what else do I have to say? What else do I have to give? It's almost like a farewell. Then when JK sings the line "Film me now film me now" It's like he's asking everyone to please capture this moment and remember them. It's a wild contrast to the visuals in SHADOW where Suga feels so isolated and alienated because all anyone is doing is filming with their phones and not connecting but hiding behind screens. They are slowly but surely reaching their BALANCE and it is both exhilarating and terrifying. Anyway.....that's my 2 cents. LOVE your channel. You and Naomi feel like family for REAL! I got ppl in GA, I might to run up on you and hug your neck!
As the lyrics and the quote suggest it is a self reflection of them on their career and how they have at one point lost their love/passion for music and "only" did it for us (performance part on the first floor). But they end up realizing music is the only thing they have and that makes them happy so they get back in the studio and continue on. (Performance part after he walked down the stairs)
Thank you Kito. The great thing about art is that it can mean a different thing for every person....the important thing is did it make you feel something...did it stir you? did it excite you? did it repulse you? etc....what do you feel when you watch it...what emotions did you experience....there is no right or wrong answer....at times it feels to me that the dancers in black are the black swans wings/body....then at times I feel like they are ocean waves or perhaps waves of turbulent thoughts tossing the swan around....then at still other times i feel like they are park of a flock of swans and perhaps the main dancer it is leader of the flock....and i also feel like sometimes that they are the shadows that Suga spoke about that you can't get away from and have to make part of your conscience....the ending scene is like one of acceptance and emergence and rising above.....anyway....those were just some thoughts I had while watching...much love (ps. i have been up since 11am yesterday :( ) here is a twitter thread I found very interesting... twitter.com/tybutdisagree/status/1218129162294190082?s=20
The art film was amazing!!! Loved the use of strings to create the mood to go with the dancing! But...YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE LYRIC VIDEO or listen to it on a streaming app (Spotify, iTunes, etc.) because it has a beat without the strings and it sounds SO GOOD FAM!!!
I was a dancer for just 10 years... not professionally, but as a personal passion. Dance is not easy. It requires focus, hard work, hours of practice, soreness, bruises... but the thing it takes the most is emotional energy to express your deepest spirit as movement. I thought quitting dance was the "right thing to do" for my life at the time, but as soon as I quit dancing, my health deteriorated. Now, my health is at a point when I can no longer dance. Along with the Martha Graham quote, as I watched Black Swan, I realized what was happening, "His wings are his dance..." and I began to sob. Art is not just a creative hobby. It is a laborious gestation and birthing. I can only imagine the pain each of our 7 has experienced, realizing that what gave them wings-the beautiful black wings they once longed for as ducklings-would become a burden they wanted to cut off. To me, the film expresses the torture of the craft, and the realization that an artist must learn to fly without their wings. P.S. Kito, keepin it 1000, I wish you would have reacted when you had more sleep 💜
Contemporary dancing as far as I understand is all about expressing emotions through your body anyone can interpret it their own way but I see the main dancer as a fragile figure,he's suffocated, scared trying to escape from the other dancers that are all dressed in black (shadows). The "contorsion" that you mentioned gave me goosebumps because he looks in pain.
Ahhhhhh kito! You eaaaarly 🤧🤧 the mv is soooo artistically pleasing so beautiful and the fluidity of the movements YES 🤧 you gotta listen to the spotify or apmu version it sounds diff and is great! Thanks for the reaction fam! Bless up 💜
Thank you so much for becoming part of the army I love your channel so much you are always the first person I go to if you post before anybody this is a wonderful video I love seeing you up this early doing this
Kito needing to watch some Animal Planet. I feel ya fam. seriously. LOL.... especially at that time of morning. LOVE this video, the performance and the song. Thanks for reacting.... PEACE
Fam!!! I’m happy you dropped this. Performing arts at its max. Kito you have to check out a lyrics video. The sound track version is different like on Spotify etc. Rap line owns this song. Period. You’ll know once you hear it
Awe Kito don’t feel bad everyone will get to the other video it’s just this is comeback season and Army are focused on charting and promoting. It our other job. 💋💋💜
I did watch and like the vid Kito! The man is contorting his body to mimic a swan. Stream smart Army, only watch reaction vids in between. Remember to stream the video and not the lyrics one, there's subtitles anyway on the original.
Damn I clicked so damn fast....🤯 I’m in same time zone....😴 FYI the audio/streaming version is audibly different! You should react to that one with Naomi and friends and pay attention to lyrics cause it’s deep!
the guy is supposed to be a swan and the others are his wings. I love when he's in the cage trying to escape but his wings are getting stuck and not letting him out
Real reaction, I was the exact same and asked the same questions 😆 I love the concept and representation but was a little disturbed by his flexibility hehe I can’t relate. Raw.
all other artists are scared of losing their fame, relevancy, fans and spot on the charts, MEANWHILE this 7 amazing men from south korea, bts, are scared of losing their passion n love for music. If that doesn’t speak volumes about the type of artists we’re stanning then idk what will. Army, buy stream shazam share ! Kito, fyi armys WILL go hard on the title track ‘s MV, we always do that for the title track mv,we’re only 1/4 speed on the intro n interlude, be ready for Feb 28th where yt will crash

There's also the audio version available on Spotify etc which is different 😍❤
It is so addicting the melody and music!!!! I love the lyrics. I especially love ur reaction when he slapped his own back. That was my reaction too.
Kito please listen to the spotify version its really different with more trap and less violin 😁 the beat goes crazy
Kito we have experienced our first BTS comeback and I am here for it. So glad to have found your channel💜
For me he’s a swan the whole time. Learning to fly. 💜💜🔥🌎
I saw your video and you with TI... looks like you had a great time!
Probably you already know this, but in Spotify you can listen to the album/single version
Thanks Kito for always supporting BTS ❤️😍💜
The art film was amazing!!! Loved the use of strings to create the mood to go with the dancing! But...YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE LYRIC VIDEO or listen to it on a streaming app (Spotify, iTunes, etc.) because it has a beat without the strings and it sounds SO GOOD FAM!!!
Jessica!!! Hey famo!!
He works so hard. He is reacting to this at this late time. So intimidating
As always the best reaction!! Loved it! Thanks Kito, and I’m off to watch all of your other vids that I haven’t watched 🙈
That was awesome 😆 the video is beautiful. The random things that jumped out of your mouth omg too funny
Bless up 💜

I did watch and like the vid Kito!
The man is contorting his body to mimic a swan.
Stream smart Army, only watch reaction vids in between. Remember to stream the video and not the lyrics one, there's subtitles anyway on the original.
Kito we appreciate you. Well done.
Now listen to the studio version! It's a banger!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Damn I clicked so damn fast....🤯 I’m in same time zone....😴
FYI the audio/streaming version is audibly different! You should react to that one with Naomi and friends and pay attention to lyrics cause it’s deep!
In spotify the melody is different, but great on both platforms. thanks for your reaction!
the guy is supposed to be a swan and the others are his wings. I love when he's in the cage trying to escape but his wings are getting stuck and not letting him out
The Lyrics.. :(
express the feelings of loss and fear of falling out of love with music. OMG!
I watched the video Kito! Y’all were having a great time in Atlanta!
Real reaction, I was the exact same and asked the same questions 😆 I love the concept and representation but was a little disturbed by his flexibility hehe I can’t relate. Raw.
Kito... there’s another version to this song this is for the Art. Can’t wait for it 💜🤘
all other artists are scared of losing their fame, relevancy, fans and spot on the charts, MEANWHILE this 7 amazing men from south korea, bts, are scared of losing their passion n love for music.
