    I'm a Geordie and it's very much a part of my character. I love being from Newcastle. However as someone who has lived in London I do find that some people have told me I don't speak 'properly' and it can be a bit of a blow as I'm proud of my accent and where I'm from. On the flip side the Geordie accent is said to be the most friendly accent in the UK and it can be an excellent talking point when in a new place. We have so many accents and dialects in this country that really it depends on what you mean by 'properly'? As a country we have a range of accents and I think that's a great thing to have.

    • @benbrown
      @benbrown  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I love the Geordie accent too! I was referring more to pronunciation and correct use of words, but I love a good accent!

    • @MrAnthWard

      Yeah I know what you mean, I just wanted to put that out there to see what you thought. Love your videos.

      As a spaniard I'm really attracted to british accents, the stronger the accent is, the better; that's why I prefer mancunian, scottish or geordie! haha

    The whole pronunciation thing really just depends on where you live and where you are from. "Mispronunciation" in one person's opinion, could be common dialogue in another's. However, I would agree that attraction depends on how someone expresses themselves and what language they choose to do so.

    • @benbrown
      @benbrown  10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think people are attracted to familiarity too, I agree that it's opinion!

  • @Brandon-Sharp
    @Brandon-Sharp 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Yes, Ben, I totally agree. Speaking well and presenting yourself in a "classy" manner generally attracts more positive attention. I believe it's true that those who swear often, lack a basic vocabulary and use the swear words to fill in what they are trying to express.. Which tends to come off as uneducated and sloppy.

    • @benbrown
      @benbrown  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, but maybe it's discriminatory? Maybe it's just society that causes us to be more attracted to intelligent/educated people because they are generally from a higher class? I like this discussion!

    I'm from north east England and have quite a strong Geordie accent. Some people like it but others hate it. I like an accent on a person as long as you can understand it as it gives them an identity of where they're from. It also makes them more relatable to speak to. :)

Looking forward to getting some feel good vibes from you in the near future, stay awesome!

  • @a333aaa

    I think what you said is correct but we mustn't extend it to accents and such because if someone's from a certain area they might not be able to help it, especially if English isn't their first language. And some people struggle with annunciating their words - to me it sounds like I'm annunciating perfectly but when I hear my voice on recording I realise I'm kind of droning/slurring and it kind of sucks but I can't change it.

    I think you're totally right at 4.22. I do agree, people who swear too much and are rude most of the times feel repellent to me, whether they're of the other sex or not. I gotta admit sometimes I swear a little bit more than what's considered appropriate, definitely gonna change that.

  • @SuperHarhoura

    I do agree that speaking eloquently and properly is a major turn on mainly because that person instantly gains my attention. However, I've come to realise that intelligence does not always correlate to how articulate or well spoken a person is. I've encountered some people whom despite the way they communicate happen to be very astute and intelligent. Whilst on the other hand I've come across some people who sound smart but behind that facade turn out to be not very sharp individuals.

    I completely agree that speaking well is attractive- its a sign of intelligence which we're hardwired to look for in another person! That being said of course accents are attractive (yours in particular) and and an fyi for good speaking to you and all fellow brownies... if someone asks you how you are or how you're doing say "I'm well" instead of "I'm good" proper english! :D
    Great vlog btw!

    I'm from Holland and I do notice a lot of 'Dunglish' (Dutch words literally translated into English). I work in a restaurant and my colleague updated the menu last week because she said she is excellent in a few languages. She did however translated 'oxtail' from the Dutch menu to 'beef penis' in German.
    I have a dyslexia, Dutch isn't even my first native language because I was raised with a dialect. But I still try very hard to write and speak properly.
    I have a love for words that can't be translated into any other language. Saudade - cafuné - dépaysement.

    Okay. I normally don't get into debates online but I wanted to give my two cents since this is a very interesting topic to me (I'm a sociolinguist) and you have touched on this previously when you tweeted about ignoring emails where people write "your" meaning "you're". From a linguist's perspective I have to disagree with your statement because what is considered proper pronunciation and proper speech in general is a social convention that is established by those who are in power, and thus, have prestige. What I'm trying to say is that what is considered proper is somewhat arbitrary. Here in the U.S., certain varieties of English are stigmatized simply because the people who speak them are from lower social classes. This situation is the same in the U.K. (and anywhere else for that matter). Received Pronunciation (RP) or BBC English is considered proper English in the U.K. because the people who speak it have a high status in society. If the people who spoke the cockney variety of English had a high status in society, the cockney variety would be the most prestigious dialect in the U.K. and that would be what we would hear on BBC. This is called overt prestige. There are also instances of covert prestige where people hold on to nonstandard speech in order to identify themselves with certain characteristics, e.g., being manly, being cool, being black, etc. So as you can see, these are all social issues. When we discriminate based on the way people speak, it actually has nothing to do with the language system itself, but rather on our perception of the people who use that system to communicate. Unfortunately, this type of discrimination is accepted throughout the world because it is a lot more indirect than saying I don't like you because of your culture. It's more accepted to say "I don't like you because of the way you speak", or "you can't work here because no one will understand your accent". So, I'm saying all of this to say that you should be careful with these types of comments because you have a lot of followers that admire you (including myself) and will hang on your every word. You are obviously entitled to your opinions and have the freedom to express yourself, but there is a thin line between language discrimination and racial/cultural/group discrimination. You are not racist. I know this. However, your comments on language can be taken that way. Many of us discriminate based on language without noticing it because it's deeply rooted in our social behavior. Since I'm a linguist, I pay very close attention to how you speak, and you often slip into nonstandard speech, which is normal. No one naturally speaks a standard language. I would suggest some readings on sociolinguistics if you would like or you could look it up in Wikipedia. Also, maybe this book would interest you: Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue: The Untold History of English by John McWhorter. Sorry for such a long message.

      @benbrown  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Super interesting thank you!! :) This subject is really interesting to me, because I pick up sayings/accents/alternative language very easily from people I like/get along well with. Perception of culture though language, some people I know speak very differently from their parents to be 'cool' or accepted, so it got me thinking about why they do it? I guess we are also attracted to cultures we are familiar with. I'll be sure to check out that book. Cheers

    • @starbers
      @starbers 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hm... - I follow several vlogging channels on youtube and am usually really hesitant placing any comments - but in Ben's channel it somehow works differently for me.... As someone else mentioned earlier, this kind of reaction the brownies show to a remark of Ben points out the interesting quality of this channel... so now parts of the „community“ plunged into a discussion about the quality of language! My first thought was that you, Ben gave the impulse to discuss quite different topics: accent, swearing, correct pronouncement and one more which is a bit difficult to catch: to speak well or talk nicely....
      DelaSyd wrote absolute interesting and clarifying things about the social background of language, the use of language as an instrument of prevalence and the danger of judging a person by the level of correct pronouncement and eloquence. The aspect of accent is in my oppinion on the one hand something different because the accent reflects the local origin of the speaking person - but on the other hand also contains the risk of creating a negative correlation between the accent (in terms of idiom) and character/intellect... I do not really have an idea about the situation in Great Britain but here in Germany a lot of (nonbavarian) people see inhabitants of Bavaria who talk with that particular kind of accent as especially rooted to the soil or in close touch to nature - and that’s of course not always true... but beyond that there’s a tendency to make fun of inhabitants of the south-east part of Germany, Saxony, because of their idiom. For example a quite wellknown entertainer created a song about that idiom wich showed those local people as a little bit narrow minded or a radio commercial presents a fictious NSA agent as totally unable to cope with a recorded telephone conversation in saxonian idiom which he takes for an absolutely undecodeable new code... which is quite funny concerning that NSA agent and his capabilities... but problematic in terms of reinforcing prejudices. Alltogether in my view this has something to do with our perception (or maybe fear) of the strange in others which unfortunately sometimes leads us to close our minds to that instead of trying to be open minded and curious.
      One more issue is how to deal with swearing - but it’s too late to get worked up over that (in German „zu spät, dieses Fass aufzumachen“, in one-on-one translation: „too late to open that vat“ :) ) .
      Hope for more interesting thoughts about the language issue....
      oops - this is a quite long message, too....

    Dude, yes. Sometimes it could be difficult understanding someone if they don't know how to speak properly/form sentences but I also try to keep in mind where they're from and if they're trying to learn a new language or assimilate into a certain culture :)

    Accents don't matter but always good to be polite.. Enjoying your vlogs as always.. I know this situation you are going through is tough but at the end you will feel more yourself and be able to get on with life.. Hope this helped keeping making good content and come down to Devon soon :)

    Maybe how attractive you find well spoken people probably depends on how well spoken you are or like to think you are. And you can have an accent and still speak well.

    I completely agree- personally I think speaking well and watching your language is all part of how people of whatever gender will perceive you, although I guess it does depend on accents you are used to hearing. Your words tell a lot about you- what your outlook is on life and the respect you have for yourself :)
