  • Ah yes, Blue Bossa by Kenny Dorham is one of the best songs for aspiring jazz musicians to start with. It has a short 16 bar form but also contains some moving functional harmony, which provides a great vehicle for practicing important basic concepts of jazz improvisation.
    Of course, it's also a tune that is fun to play!
    In this video I've broken it down into four levels for beginning improvisors to work with. As always I start with the least amount of thinking first - I believe that great improvisors always start out with very little material. The less note choices you have, the less you have to worry about whether they will sound good. They will! Just play.
