- Excellent recording of perhaps the longest version of "Cortez the Killer" ever - 22 minutes!
From Neil Young & Crazy Horse, summer 2001 European Tour. June 21, 2001, Sportpaleis Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Cortez was the encore.

My last concert in the Netherlands before emigrating to Spain. He is my musical hero since I was 19 years in 1970. This guy isn't about elaborate chord progressions, unconventional time signatures or complex melodies. He hits the RIGHT notes that resonate in your soul.
He is, in the absolute technical definition, a genius. And a shaman.
@@erikmorse5089 fuckin´ right bro
All I have to say is oh my God I’ve been listening to him ever since my brother we were not allowed to listen to rock ‘n’ roll but my brother has the album for Waze treats his name is David Ettleman he lives in Pahrump I love you
I truly was taken captive I need help meet there for I don’t know how nobody believe me but it really happened and I love you David
Neil Young this is not a joke David and myself we have no idea I always very bad things happen I know they happen to a lot of people are you know your music helps us get through every day even though I’m not gonna touch with him I know he listens to you anyway
I was there. It's still the best ever. The sublime. Midsummer night in Rotterdam. You cannot come closer to the perfection of interpret a song of grief, pain and pure beauty in twenty-two minutes and seconds, except Neil. No Mercy. He burnt down Ahoy, slowly and with passion. Thank you, Neil Young and Crazy Horse!
Mooi gezegd
This song found me during 2021 -- after some time that I probably needed it most. At least I'm here.
It's never too late. Glad you found him. NOW, ENJOY.
I had the utmost luck of being there and witness the most mindblowing performance of a Neil-song ever. He just kept going on and on and on. the other bandmembers were looking at each other in disbelief but kept supporting him. Neil was totaly in another place. A good one mind you. It was an unbelievable experience.
I think they knew exactly what he was doing. And joyously went along for the ride.

Proof God exists and has blessed this man with unbelievable talent, which we all get to enjoy. A true masterpiece created by Mr. Young.
That's not Talent! It is practicing every f*ucking day!
MASTERPIECE...YOU NAILED IT MY FRIEND ❤
@@CarstenFpunkt Mr.Neil is a gift from GOD...practice makes perfect..however..its so UNBELIEVABLE the talents this GENTLEMAN shared with us all .Takes ya back to the GOOD old day's ❤
@@CarstenFpunkt youre incorrect. Many practice every fucking day, become technical wizards and craftsmen but only the really inspired are touched with the ability to touch their souls and express it as this man does.
He has a virtual library of hundreds of original songs in so many genres.
Amen😍😎👍
The greatest song ever written in my humble opinion. Neil has an amazing gift of being able to say more with a guitar than he ever could with words.
universal song with everlasting subtile lyrics about oppression of less developed. But were they really less developed than us in this cruel predatory capitalism? Well they question we want to ask are we really happy ?
and yes i consider it one of greatest of all, 10 years and i still find it very inspiring
3 simple chords.... nothing else required.... 1 of the greatest songs ever written for sure.... And the lyrics.... Amazing....
YES! Thats true!
Tout à fait de ton avis un trés grand !!!!!!!
I really appreciate you guys who were there or who share your early experience with the Zuma album. I came to love Neil's work 20 years or so ago and this is the absolute best song written and performed by arguably the best singer songwriter of the 20th century also happens to be one of the best rock guitarists if the 20th century.
The interpretations in the performance of this song were built in from the beginning and I will agree that this is the best interpretation of the song of his own creation. I'm a sculptor and as I see it the absence of or negative space of a thing nay be more important than the space anything fills. That's why 22 minutes feels too short when 7 or 11 was too short but was perfect as well.
The 7 people who thumbs downed this are beyond help. Feel sorry for them. They lack a soul.
+Charles Kidder Oh well for them Cortez was still a Killer!!!!!!!!
+Charles Kidder either that Charles , or they still have all their own hair
SOME people.. ( sometimes myself) should Google what the song stands for...maybe they would understand better.Neil is undeniably a heart felt, passionate artist/musician.❤
Heh - even Richard Nixon...
Apparently they cannot be a fan of NEIL. Somebody's always trying to start crap & see if they can get a rise out of anyone. Too much time on their hands that they need to spend elsewhere.... 🪶🪶🪶🪶🪶
Transcendental Neil at his best. I love how every song Neil and Crazy Horse play, they play it as if it is the last time they are ever going to do it. It's as if they don't want that song to stop, or not until they've given their all to every possible component to exploring and uncovering the fullness of the song and it's absolute integrity...... and the precision of their sound as they weave and build and explore....... and the emotive power of the notes and lyrics; just mindbendingly awesome.
It's a travesty that this sublime performance of Cortez is only 22 minutes.......
i see some unrelentless energy in this version previously mentioned, It is remarkable how Neils signature voice stays the same despite the age. Respect!
Well said.
You spoke it.
some would say 'only 22 minutes'. i am oneof those but i will certainly take this breezy fast version for all its timelessness and sense of pace and careful thoughtful exploration plumbing the heights and depths of it for our contemplation and appreciation. Long may it play.
Amen❣️ Well written!
As a singer songwriter,
you seem to be…🎸🙏🏻✍🏻
Christ almighty! 9 mins and 24 seconds before Neil cuts into the lyrics. Love this version!!! I believe it was 1996 when I saw Neil and Crazy Horse, and he played Cortez, very close to this lengthy version. That show I saw, Neil wore his boxer shorts with a t-shirt ( underwear). I still have a laugh looking back on that evening, but what a show it was. It was so perfect! To see Neil with Crazy Horse is an amazing feeling I'll never forget. They're so in sync with eachother, it nearly made me cry from disbelief. I was right in front.
Love this story. I've been lucky enough 3 times, in 3 decades. True shamans, literally. I've journeyed with Shamans of many stripes and traditions, and Crazy Horse are among the masters.
I'll say it again, this version is just sublime; totally mesmerising, absorbing and transcendental.
I defy you to find a better version of this song, epic 22 minutes. Just perfection. Could listen to this every day
i 'v been looking for the longest-version for a long time now my thanks goes the uploader and neil and crazy horse i can now sit back take sip of fire-water and enjoy the magic of a true lengend.....from a native american indian.mondo-video
Crazy to think Neil wrote this song at 15 years of age after hearing the story in history class. 15 yo and writing tunes like this. A legend
Nobody , I mean nobody plays a song for 20+ minutes and you think, this could keep going and id enjoy it . This is a masterpiece and could play the rhythm, the riff, the song an hour and it would be great
Very great version. Thanks. I think, it's the longest version, I've ever heard, too. Beautiful !
Beautiful opening. Wonderful song... thanks for posting.
Best 22 mins I have ever had. wow What a show this must have been...
He need to write part 2 of this song, thank you Neil Young.
Neil is begetter than ALL!! Could listen to this over and over !!
This is so awesomely beautiful!
I was one of the lucky witnesses that night.
fantastic - many many thanx for sharing this
Absolument incroyable ... Il n'y a pas de mot pour qualifier ça.
Thankxx Christopher,..22'min ;-) cool!
Went to a Neil Young concert. He didn't play Cortez the Killer. This means I have to go to another concert.
yes have u beeen yet ts 5 years later!
I would like to know the meaning of the song.I am a little slow however I pay attention to the lyrics. Thank you.❤
It takes a long time to be shure.
@@margaretstoner4701Damn, it's part of HISTORY. Google CORTEZ & see what you get. Back in my day, we had encyclopedias. Once you have learned about Cortez, you will totally understand & the SONG & LYRICS will become so much more to you. It took place in South America. On the shore named MONTEZUMA. I'm way late on this post so hopefully, you already know by now. Please give a shout-out & let me know.
Been to maybe ten, including Bridge shows. Still haven't heard it. Got to go to a few more.
Thanks for posting - enthralled from the beginning.
I can live day and night within this song, and it will be more exciting than a mundane real life.
I can just imagine Carlos Santana and Neil Young jamming Cortez together for many hours...
that would be epic music, both are great guitar players
Perhaps one of the most epic songs ever, reaches your soul! Grabs it, and pulls it out of you!
I went to the moon, and back. Thank You Neil. Those bars in Rotterdam are pretty good. I could hear, one hour of it.
This body of work got Neil into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. There may be better ax players, but none more passionate.
BEAUTYFUL SONG
Beautiful Ballad about a sad time for the Native Americans...it is said they greeted the Europeans with open hearts....

The best guitarists in the world- clapton, page, gilmor even hendrix can't do what NEIL YOUNG doing with he's guitar!
The guitar is just another limb for this man.
Most greatest musician in the whole world.
P.S- mind that he was 56 years old & after he's stroke, when he did that thing on stage!!!

Clap-ton? In that company? Urgh....
yap, clapton & duane allman also.
+נמרוד ייבין, אבנון Comparing apples to grapes to cars to potatoes to chihuaha's. Utterly stupid to do so.
The 1 that don't have some personal taste, is the stupid
In your opinion . . . Cheers!
I saw just Neil and some guitars at Red Rocks in the late 90eez and I still haven't recovered.....I don't think I ever will.
I love how Neil seems to be working-out some alternative themes and rhythms in a bunch of favs.
Absolute masterpiece of rock music
Know matter how bad a day u had just listing to this makes u forget thanks NEIL.
Bought "Zuma" in '76, wore it out playing this track. His discriptive lyrics of Central American Indians have echoed for decades within my mind...eerily floating along on those melodies...cutting to the bone just as Cortez did. My impression of the song's ending verse has been Neil penned the lyrics to suggest he "lost his way" as in he was killed by Cortez and has been viewing his love from beyond...knowing she's still waiting there. Anyone else interpret it similarly.
Bill Henry funny u should say..i think he is in touch with his previous lives..hard to explain but he comes off very tribal very primitive at times native after all this IS CRAZY HORSE
I know all of us feel empathy for our Central and South American brothers at some level ... for the conquest. I have travelled there and I understand how deep this is ... Neil may very well been a native in a past life ... it feels like Old Souls influencing the song.
Ok.Please no bad messages. I read Neil is a Canadian musician. I was thinking like you though my friend ❤
@@margaretstoner4701 Neil is a Canadian musician. I used to hang out with him and band in 1966. I was 10 yrs yonger than the band guys but they adopted me whenever they practiced. I was so proud. Nobody knew them at that time.
Mynah Birds.
I used to keep watch for the cops coming as neighbours literally a mile away would call the cops because their music was so loud. Id warn them when i saw the cop car on the long laneway and they would turn down their amps.
Sweet memory.

beautiful !!!! my pref Neil's song
WOW!!! That's all I can say.
IT'S all about the intro ☆☆☆♡¥✌Neil Young!,on the shore lay Montezuma ..
BRILLIANT
Cortez the Killer is an astounding piece of modern art. Even Hernan Cortez would approve
The sheer weight of it. But it's bare bones already. The better to discover the empty fullness, and so at 09:09 Neil Young decided to do it anyway and the story proceeds across a desert of oases to where at 13:20 the chords lead to an outpost where I can remember where I both lost and found my way. One of the many things I like about Neil Young's work is that it reflects an experience that we all have at certain points and so the representation that is presented serves to unify a multiplicity.
Immense! other posters talk about technique, just sit back and enjoy the music
"Notes? Anyone can play notes. Music is 10% notes and 90% the attitude of the motherfu@%er playin em." -- Miles Davis.
Wonderful !!!!
i was there !!! flipped my brains out.
Too short!!
This really is on an another level completely. As close to the meaning of the term SUBLIME as possible ....
Holy Fuck , this is Great Music

What a song....Epic Shit Right Here

You still can't beat the studio version off of Zuma which was essentially a live recording. Sometimes a song is like a snapshot frozen in time which can never be duplicated. Just as DangerBird was. That song was pure magic which has never come close to being performed as well live anywhere even though it was also recorded live in the living room of a rented house on Zuma Beach.
Well he's got the right folks attention he wins in this game of live knowledge that only comes from God himself most people never get it❤
