    Ah thank you for clearing up the pallet query, I was hoping you'd say something like that. Now I'll get stuck into more practice. Many, many thanks

    I love your laughter. It's that little kid spirit in all of us that loves to have fun and be creative. Do you have a start to finish on painting horses? I've just recently started with Oil painting and I have major issues with the wet on wet technique. But also, I'm confused with the linseed oil, paint thinner etc...When to use it and drying times before adding more paint to not make mud or not be able to blend the paint smoothly. Thanks for posting your beautiful art and sharing your tips.

      Thank you Teresa! I will be doing more videos on painting horses, equine anatomy and more on that in the future as we get our Online Art Academy up and running. I will also be addressing more info on art materials and the use of mediums and such. Thanks for your questions! Here is our web site to see more of what is going on with Renaissance Creative Arts! www.renaissancecreativearts.com

    Hello Jessica. I like to make my own canvases but use cotton. How do I prepare a linen canvas and what threads per inch, do I need for linen. Can I use linen from the fabric store?

    • @JessicaHenry
      @JessicaHenry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Renee, I wouldnt get linen from the fabric store, It could be treated. Threads per inch can vary, depending on what kind of linen you buy. Rough or coarse, will have chunkier and fewer TPI than portrait linen which is very fine. I prefer to paint on fine to medium weight linen. Sometimes I buy prepared linen and othertimes I buy it raw. I first apply a coat of PVA sizing (from Gamblin) then when thats dry, I apply 3 coats of oil ground, over the next few weeks. Check label for instructions. All Gamblin products.

    Jessica you've answered lots of my queries in this video, thank you indeed. I have a question if you have time to answer. As I don't paint every day I have been cleaning my glass pallet & brushes after each session. I notice that you have your paints arranged on the top edge of your pallet. Do you lose much paint by it drying out ? I'm guessing you just add more colour over the dryer layer ? I expect you're going to tell me to get busy & paint every day ....... discipline ay !

      Haha! Painting every day is easier said than done! I would love to be able to, but the life of an artist seems to be pulled in every different direction. As far as the paint goes- For videos, I squeeze out more than I need because I don't want to stop during the filming to put out more. With the extra, I do leave it on my palette, and kinda peel back the "skin" next time I paint, with an occasional entire palette scraping. If I was a really good and diligent person, I'd put the extra paint in a sealable container, and put it in the freezer, which it will then keep fresh, almost indefinitely. :)

    How long does it take for oil paints to dry? I’ve just recently discovered you. I love your style. I’ve been painting with acrylics, but would like to try oils. I really don’t know much about them, but I’m learning little by little from you. Thank you!

    • @JessicaHenry

      Thanks so much for your support! I personally find acrylics very unforgiving and difficult to handle. I like the slower drying time of oils as it allows me to work the edges into the background more giving more atmosphere and reality to the image. I know you can do that with acrylics with drying retardant, but I’d rather not bother. Drying time with oils is contingent on a few variables. Darks dry faster, whites are much slower, and depending on how thick or thin you apply paint will alter the drying time, too. My first pass with odorless mineral spirits and a little color is almost dry to the touch in an hour. And then the first pass of values and sketching is thin and dark and pretty dry within a day. Then when the painting is as finished as I typically want it, I allow a week or so. They say in order to varnish it needs 6 months to cure, so the varnish won’t crack and ruin it. I will apply a workable varnish to it when it’s really dry to the touch.

    Missed the live demo🙁 Do you have a certain time and or day of the week you have your video live??? I have been trying to watch each and everyone of your painting videos. You are so amazing! You give the impression of being so at ease, while you paint, even though you are recording live!
    Question? Do you always paint on linen? It is quite expensive! I also would have to order it. When you are painting, on what looks like a panel, do you have linen panels or do you cover panels with linen canvas? Do you prepare these yourself? How does this work for you? If I do not have linen covered canvas or panels, what is the next best thing? What I have on hand are regular acrylic gessoed canvas or the same panels! Very frustrating!
    And one more thing.....after you are finished painting for the day, what do you do with the paint left on your palette?
    Do you clean your palette off?
    Thank you😊
