We talk about it all the time, how important it is to put the work in during the off-season. Whether that be property management or habitat improvement, Jeff has so much knowledge when it comes to killing mature whitetail bucks. A good friend of mine owned that first Iowa ground the Lindseys bought. He had it from 2017 to 2020. Him and i hunted it and had some great deer around. The biggest negative was the way the topography laid it was very hard to hunt without deer seeing you come to your spot unless you only hunted the edges

To Jeff’s point at the beginning about people being more closed minded in the turkey hunting realm, it’s because the resource is far more fragile than deer. The advancements in technology is making the wild turkey so easy for the average Joe to kill but, they don’t successfully replace themselves on the landscape like deer do. In our opinion, that’s why die/hard turkey hunters take such a strong stance against things like “reaping,” decoys, TSS, etc. And, rightfully so…
Yep that makes sense. Boy seems everything in hunting has been to make it easier 🤦♂️
Turkeys are a very fragile resource that we must protect every chance we get!

Ohio corn concern solved- Bait (defined as immediately consumable food after dispensed) shall not be furnished on the ground. IE- Gravity feeders legit, spin feeders no go. Think it through…everybody should be content despite having to give something up…and I 100% agree with you guys, but also know it wont go away per MR and others.
Jeremy, your comments on property management afar being challenging resonated big time. While my OH farm, at 6 hrs, adds so much more of a struggle logistically with lodging, provisions and the little setbacks carrying big impacts…my property 15min away isn’t much the better. It’s a labor of love where the journey is the greater victory but the most transparent of trophies.

Probably 10 years ago we had a doe only early ML season in Ohio. It was for 2 days I believe. I can't remember exact numbers but I don't believe a lot of does were taken.
Interesting they had a doe only season that early. Most states have theirs later
Indiana got better after we went to one buck, then they brought in crossbow and rifle it went down hill ever since! We got donate deer to feed the hungry and we don't have to pay for processing.
Good deal on no fee for donations. Wish more states would go to that!

The irony being, that by promoting the older age class buck, it also exacerbates the spread of cwd. So much for protecting the resource. I think that a strong argument can be made that it was hornlust that brought cwd east of the Mississippi in the first place.
Uh I don’t think this is valid at all. 1 1/2 year old buck prevalence is shown to be just as much in many areas and there are way more of them on the landscape, not too mention the natural dispersion of 1 1/2 year old bucks
I got to say these 2 guys really hit the nail on the with there podcast. 1 invite all the most successful hunters on there podcast pull all there secret tips and tricks for hunting get there foot into the industry and have a major following on TH-cam it’s literally genius. The only reason anyone watches this channel is because the guest they have on

Sw va turkey population is 100% significantly less then 20 yr ago! Atleast in my teens 22-28 yrs back it was nothing to see flocks of 60 or more in deer season all over my county. I havent seen a flock of 30 in a decade i dont think and if so barely and rarely! They still exist in easily killable numbers but the numbers have to be much less

Interesting you guys talking about staying off the land to be able to grow and harvest mature big deer. Not necessarily true. My farm is a very interesting story. I have a beef farm but I have a big chunk that's for deer habitat and hunting. The problem is the access, only way to get to it is from the west,southwest. The wind is almost always out of that direction. That's why my dad never hunted it. I had the idea that I could the deer used to my presence and scent. The first couple of years I thought I messed up and blew em completely out and they left. But by year three, started seeing em daylight and eventually it worked. Even during the season. I can walk thru the area and that afternoon or next morning they'll be in the plots. People will say I basically tamed them,nope. If they see me they're gone. If they get my scent while they're out feeding or roaming around they'll perk up and be aware. So there's still strategy there but it allowed to be on the property year round and not run the deer off. To me I treat em just like my livestock. I make sure they have year round food and water. And sometimes I don't harvest, sometimes I choose not to, whatever the herd needs. But it's possible to walk your land and not mess with the deer,it just takes times, in my case several years

2:21:27 i am 100% someone who thinks we need to do something about turkey populations. However the biggest issue in my opinion is the quality of eastern forests. 100 years ago (1920) eastern forests were either just freshly clearcut (90%+ of Pennsylvania by 1913) or a few decades into regrowth. By 1960-70. Those forests are all becoming prime middle aged forests. And by now, our woods are aging out of their prime years for turkeys. Turkeys LOVE disturbance in the woods, and NEED young forests for poult rearing. We have huge chunks of every state covered in dense full canopy mature woods. Thats not the absolute best environment for turkeys.
Add two decades of more wet springs than not, a general increase in turkey hunting everywhere. And a boom in coyotes, raccoons, and opossums. And we have a hugely freaking serious problem when it comes to turkey. We’ve been here before though, and brought turkey back from the brink, so we can absolutely do it again.
Ill also add, that what Pennsylvania has done (taking rifles out of fall turkey) is absolutely a good thing and needs to stay in place
The hush program does cost the hunter money. Here in Iowa you have to spend $30 for a doe tag just to donate it. If you decide to keep it a have it processed for your self at at meat locker, it cost an arm and a leg. I took 73lbs. Of meat off the buck I shot and it cost me almost $700. If your not just getting ground meat, you can't afford to take 5-6 doe's to a processor in iowa

1:54:45 have to disagree with you immensely here. Shifting to concurrent buck and doe for two week’s killed a LOT of doe for 5-10 years. We do now have more hunters passing them and the deer pop is on the rise in areas of the state again
