    Wait - what?!? That video didn't blow up yet? - you only have 25 Subscribers - now 26. Thats crazy low for this quality. Keep it up! Please.
    What do you use to animate this? Could you make a tutorial to make awesome video essay Videos?
    What do you do/study? What problem do you want to solve?

    I used this concept quite a lot the last few days. This is not there to actually solve problems. Its about a better way of argumenting in your head and to others what the solution is. And if you can make an argument, based on things that are just fundamentally true - then one can't argue against it.
    Like we could argue - we should use first principle thinking, to argument an innovation - BECAUSE Elon Musk does it.
    Or
    BECAUSE you can argue for ideasthat noone else beliefs, or has ever done(because its not based on others, but on things we can be certain of).
    I belive nothing we know is a fundamental truth though. because everything, is only as long true, as we haven't disproven it. Thats why he said - or as close as we can get to it.
    So - the point I was trying to make is basically: First principle thinking seems to be more a reasoning process, than a problem solving/solution upcoming process. That part still has to come through a process of having creative ideas. And then once you had a possible solution, you could reason it either by analogy, or by first principles. And there - first principles shine. :)

    He solves problems by being dedicated to work as hard as hell and never give up trying while enjoying it!!!!
    Solving problems to you has to be something you enjoy doing so much that you never feel bored while doing it and as long as a problem takes

  • @MrSaemichlaus
    @MrSaemichlaus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    First step to solving a problem is to realize that it's nothing negative. It's rather a challenge that you can either fail or win at. If you win at any rate, it will have taught you something, so it's always worth it. A Problem is like a ladder between your floor and the next higher floor. The ladder will cost you energy, but spending that energy will bring you on the next floor - if you are consistent and stay at it. Concentrate on the next floor, not on the ladder.

    • @agentsmith9553
      @agentsmith9553 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrSaemichlaus You said the problem is a ladder, so how the fuk can we solve it if we don't concentrate on the ladder (problem)? ;)

    • @ramondjurdjevic5079
      @ramondjurdjevic5079 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On both at the same time: focus on the problem at hand while keeping in mind what you will be rewarded with by simply working on it (whether you win or lose, you gain important experience) and at the same time not being intimidated by the problem's complexity or possible consequences of (not) solving the problem itself. One step at a time :)

    • @ManifestingExcellence
      @ManifestingExcellence 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agent Smith We should concentrate on the 'next floor' which is the result we are after. The problem is something we must get past to achieve our end result. For example: people were and with Elon Musk are still improving the way of transportation of men and goods so it's faster and more accessible. The same reason Romans have build roads, to transport men and goods more effectively. As for technology these days - instant gratification. It must be accessible in an instant.

      One person at random I think that's a bit unfair to say he is ripping off nerdwriter1 considering that this is not the type of content he covers. When I say not a copy paste, I meant on the content around Elon Musk. Most just upload interviews, they don't necessarily present a descriptive analysis.

    Quality vid. I think how you addressed the first principle of physics was valuable, b/c a lot of people have heard that he follows that principle without any explanation of what it actually was (from other youtube vids about musk). If you could do a follow up vid about something like "how Elon musk problem solves using first principle of physics" and put some more examples from his business ventures that'd be really good stuff too. The explanation of the first principle here was good and accurate, but personally I'd love to know of a specific time he applied it to overcome some of his most difficult problems. Like did he think of paypal using the first principles, or did it just help him figure out how to make paypal work as a web service

    Nice video! And I know it takes work to edit and make a video like this. However this doesn't really distinguish what the difference is between "first principles", and thinking by analogy...which was Musks point. Maybe more contemplation about the main message before moving into the video making process.

      How about a simple one? How can I motivate myself to start a huge project? Say I am to write a book (just writing not publishing) in 3 months, and I am very self-conscious of my writing, and as a result, I hardly make any real progress day after day. How do you suggest I go about addressing this problem with first principle mental model?

    • @Venzera
      @Venzera 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We know that nothing will get done if you maintain your current approach. That is one of your first principles or fundamentals. Being self-conscious is an impediment to progress so you can solve that problem by not committing to a single version of your book. Write multiple versions of your book and later on you can edit them and commit to a single version.

    Keep on going !
    You may want to think more about the losing weight analogy applied to first principles.
    I recently watched a Ted Talk by Rueben Meeman "The Mathematics of losing weight". He points out that you don't actually "burn" fat and the idea of applying the unit of a calorie is the wrong metric. Losing weight involves transforming a fat molecule C55H104O6 into CO2 and H2O. To do this you must reduce your intake of food while exercising more. Hence the body will convert that fat molecule back to CO2 and H2O (a by product of exercise).
    In a way this is a superb example of throwing out the old analogy of "burning" fat and applying first principles of transforming a molecule of human fat to something the body can easily dispose of (carbon dioxide and water).
    All my best Cheers mate !

    I've already been using this method subconsciously but if the answer is one which you don't already happen to know, you'll just turn your whole life into an experiment with the goal of finding out if the answer is boolean.
    For example:
    "Can I become [var 1]?
    Yes.
    How do I become [var 1]?
    Not sure, maybe by doing [var 2]."
    See, you don't know if [var 2] is going to work for you unless you try it. That variable could be wasted time of your life.

    We are actually not sure about the statement "To lose weight you have to burn more calories than you eat". The actual thing is that to lose weight "You have to burn more calories while you eat, and ALSO be getting all the nutrition your body needs, otherwise your body will start burning things other than fat to make up the difference."
    Also "Burn" is subjective. We burn many more calories sleeping and doing daily routines than we do running or exercising for short periods. The goal of exercise is to RAISE your baseline metabolic rate, and not, in and of itself, to burn calories, although it does do that as well. What exercise REALLY does is activate genetic pathways in our bodies that make it more likely the body will not hold on to fat, as long as you are getting the general nutrition needs your body requires.
    So, at the end of the day, "To lose weight, we have to exercise for 30 minutes to an hour daily in order to raise baseline metabolism and increase general health, and also eat nutrient dense foods." If you do that, your body will naturally keep off the weight, as long as you are not eating lots and lots of junk (like simple carbs and sugar).
    Calories are not all created equally!! Just like energy from oil is different than energy from sunlight, in terms of its follow on effects after extraction.
    That is first principles thinking.

    Good vid but by "internet", musk wasn't talking about PayPal. He was talking about getting internet access to those who don't have access with something like Starlink
