The fact that you can name all the keys and literally reproduce the chorus is just amazing. One of the reasons I always come to you for the reacts and for the knowledge that you bring out about music.
Yeah, it's amazing how quickly he zeroed in on the entire structure -- and how easily he explained it. Just subscribed because he obviously can teach. . .
Agreed. Love spiritbox and I love watching professional musicians reacting to what I’m floored with. But dang, the way he just hears it and plays it is just plain fascinating to me. Definitely earned a sub.
Spiritbox surprise me every time! I absolutely love this!!!! Courtney has such an amazing voice. The guitars sound incredible! The bass is pretty nice and the drumming feels really great! That piano (?) part is so good as well! The production is incredible. They haven't disappointed me and I don't see them doing it anytime soon or ever! They are absolutely great!
My new favorite reaction channel. Love how open minded you are to a lot of the newer metal/rock bands and give an in depth review of your opinions as well as your charisma to match. Well done.
Video was filmed in Cali after they tracked the new record (coming out in September). This one has a very “Animals As Leaders” kind of guitar riff, and I love it. I’ve maintained that Mike is one of, if not the, smartest people in music. He hears stuff most people don’t, and rather than taking over, allows Courtney to do her thing, and creates the secondary line underneath.
So awesome you can play the piano to the songs you react pretty much instantly, can listen to you play all day! So soothing your very talented! Great reaction 🤟
I love Spiritbox and Courtney and this song to DEATH, but at this point I feel like Howie has it out for me and my incessant requests for August Burns Red.
I love spiritbox and their music, but I always have way more appreciation for their technical creativity after watching your reactions to breakdown alot of the music theory
Re: 10:49 and where the video was shot - it was shot in Calabasas, California, northwest of Los Angeles in the Santa Monica mountains. They also recorded the album in California (though much further southeast, in the Yucca Valley/Palm Springs area - close to Coachella).
Like I said the other day...At any given time, if executed properly, a moment of silence can be just as important sometimes more than a moment of sound.
I am so excited for this album! Great video, I am always impressed how quickly you are able to pick up the keys and start playing something beautiful :)
I just love whenever you bring the whole song to the keyboard/piano. It just makes it more meaningful to me. I don’t care how many times I comment, you deserve attention because of the attention you give!
Great studio :) I love those lava lamps and the purple glow. I've just recently fallen in love with Spiritbox. Good reaction video. You obviously know your music really well. I'm with you. I'd like to hear her voice a bit more clearly. On one of their songs I noticed the higher frequencies really pronounced on her t and s sounds. It seemed to blur things a bit to my ear. But I'm really sensitive to that.
This song is like goosebumps in musical form. Courtney's voice is just other-worldly, and Mike's riffs are the perfect compliment. These two are just perfection.
8:17 - it's interesting you say that, because it's very true with the "djent" side of progressive metal. This even goes down to mixing, because you try and get it to be where the kick drum, the guitars, and the bass are all mixed to sound like one single big instrument, rather than three different instruments.
I knew your piano playing was gonna be amaizing doing this one! As you said, really complex music, which is good to open more doors into music, great video as always!
It took me less than 2 seconds to fall in love with that chorus and put a sad face. I have a weakness and it is that iv-VI proggression. Any song with that gets to my heart.
I would absolutely LOVE if you reacted to Vanish Cavas by ERRA. I promise on my mind body and soul, you will be blown away. One of the best metalcore(ish) songs written in the last 20 years.
Spiritbox generally tune to drop F#1 ( F# C# F# B E G# C# ) on a 7 string guitar. And yes I do mean one half step higher than Bass E1. The Bass is tuned down to F#0 on a 5 string. This would make the key they're playing the reletive F# / Gb major and not E flat minor but thats just my opinion :P
I've never listened to this band! Which is really sad, because my DGD group talks about them often. But wow heres my first and I love it! Her voice is so beautifully haunting. I think I'm a fan. :b thanks david.
Really love how you break down songs and geek out to every single part of it! Would love to see you react to Skyharbor, sounds like something you might enjoy. Definitely something I’d love watching you break down. Cheers!
In the description of the music video the girls are actually credited as “Young Courtney” and “Teenage Courtney”. So your assumption was correct. Love this song, video, and band. So good. I’m predicting album of the year for me.
Love me some Spiritbox, they're also the type of band that put lyrics in the description. So no matter the vocal vs music mix you can generally follow along. (Helps a lot for folks who can't understand the screams a lot too). Spiritbox lyrics can sometimes be a bit cryptic as well, which personally is a plus.
It’s funny that you bring up Amy Lee because Courtney did an interview with her and talked about how much she admires her. You can find it on TH-cam. It was a great conversation. Highly encourage you to listen to that.
I figured these guys were in Drop A from B standard...but their guitars seem to actually be in C# standard all the time. Including bass. One of my favorite tunings! APC is another band always in C# (AKA Db).
You should check out an Australian band called Ne Obliviscaris. There's a couple of songs in particular, Intra Venus, Devour Me Colossus. A song of theirs called And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope was used by the Australian Conservatorium of Music to teach students music composition. Check the live in Denver version of that song. Really enjoy your reviews of music!
awesome video man. If you get the chance I highly recommend you listen to Perennial. There is a music video aswell. It has all the choppyness but melody driven greatness signature of Spiritbox all while being heartfelt and deep.
It's awesome you've found & are enjoying the hell out of Spiritbox. They're my favorite metal band. Now that you've reacted to their latest video if you want to react to more you should check out their song Belcarra which is my favorite song by them. Another group you may be interested in is Infected Rain. Their vocalist is Lena Scissorhands and she's pretty amazing also. Not Courtney level amazing, but damn close.
I wonder why nobody can hear, that it's not a bass line, it's a 7 string low-drop guitar playing that part, and you may clearly hear the bass at the same time behind..
That clean guitar part in the verse, so Animals as Leaders inspired. Mike is a monster guitar player and composer. That prog verse going into that Pop-heavy chorus. They should name their album not "Eternal blue" but "Hooks for days"
All art should be open to your own Interpretation. It can hit us all differently in our own unique place in life. That's one of the reasons art is powerful.
Well, what if while we wait for a new Spiritbox song you react to some of their older songs, cause I really want to see Blessed Be, cause I just love it whenever you talk about Spiritbox and that’s my favorite from them.
Spiritbox tune to Drop F# on 7 string guitars (F#C#F#BEG#C#) on most of the newer material, though many of their songs will pitch the guitars down with whammy effects. Their older material is usually in Drop B on a 6 string (BF#BEG#C#).
Holy shit. Just came here from the animals by architects video, are you trying to cover all my favourite songs or is it a coincident? PLEASE do While She Sleeps! it's my favourite band - they're super melodic with great instrumentals, and great songwriting and emotion, there's nothing quite like their stuff!
Spiritbox really do not put out a bad song at all! Absolutely loved this track HOWIE - Please please please get David to react to Outliers by Aviations - I can promise you that this song is a MUST to listen to and is heavily underrated.
First time hearing them. I have to agree, I definitely hear an evanescence influence as well as maybe a Lacuna Coil influence. If you haven't checked then out I highly recommend it.
Honestly, what you said about her voice being a part of the track and wishing it was a little louder, is my only gripe with some of their songs. They're my favorite band right now, but sometimes I need to read the lyrics before I can actually sing along to some of their stuff.
Way different genre. But it would be cool to see you react to sturgill simpson “you can have the crown/ some days” live at sun king brewery. Its interesting because the guitar player in that performance was a sit in for the one in Sturgill’s band (not sure why) and the guy absolutely shreds. Cheers!!
The fact that you can name all the keys and literally reproduce the chorus is just amazing. One of the reasons I always come to you for the reacts and for the knowledge that you bring out about music.
Yeah, it's amazing how quickly he zeroed in on the entire structure -- and how easily he explained it. Just subscribed because he obviously can teach. . .
Same.
Yeah as soon as he started doing that it was pretty much an instant sub from me 😂
Came here to comment the same! He nails it on the fly and I would totally buy a spiritbox covered on the keys album in a heartbeat
Agreed. Love spiritbox and I love watching professional musicians reacting to what I’m floored with. But dang, the way he just hears it and plays it is just plain fascinating to me. Definitely earned a sub.
I’m thinking Spiritbox is bringing out the album of the year 🙌
I hope so!!!!
Depends if Slipknot drops one this year but I might agree. Architects was too overhyped and ADTR had way underdelivered
Agreed! Also, 69th like ayyyeeee
@@mprior93 it's been over a decade since a 'good' slipknot album
@@guitar864 very subjective opinion but it is your opinion so that’s fair.
surely im not the only one who wants to hear his full piano cover of this song. so pretty!
You know... you kinda remind me of Mr. Rogers if he was a music teacher with a TH-cam channel. That's a compliment.
I take it as one, thank you
I drew the same comparison. Such wholesome energy
I love it.
100%, David is the best.
He’s so wholesome and have such a calm voice. And his knowledge..it’s informational and fun. PBS might have to give this man a TV show 😅
Seeing David play that on the keys makes me want an acoustic version of Secret Garden. It sounds so emotional 😭
Same! I almost cried and can't stop smiling at the same time 😭
There is a acoustic Version of Constance Out now
@@airyelllllll I wish Nikola would do it.

Album of the year coming up! Eternal Blue is gonna be a classic
I love Jinjer, and I’m so stoked of all their success in the past recent years.
But look out here comes the SPIRITBOX TRAIN LETSGOOOOOO CHOOCHOOOO
This is my first time watching him and oh my gosh 🥺 He just made this song more magical when he started playing it 😭💕✨
Man, Im telling you, you gotta react to The Mara Effect live. It’s probably Spiritbox’s best work
YES PLEASE
X2
Yes! Not enough reactions to this masterpiece.
If the live 1, 2 and 3, make it x3
@@apfirdaus5065 it is the entire song with all 3 parts played as one
They’re going to have album of the year! Calling it now!
Easily a top contender.
I love waiting to hear your piano renditions of these songs. They’re so beautiful. Thank you
I probably don’t know you. But since you’re here I can tell by your taste in music that we’d be great friends and that we wish David was our dad
Lmao fair
David isn't old enough to be my dad, but I still wish I could jam with him, haha.
Pretty much 😂
My new favorite reaction channel. Love how open minded you are to a lot of the newer metal/rock bands and give an in depth review of your opinions as well as your charisma to match. Well done.
Even with strictly clean vocals, this song is so HEAVY. I'm definitely becoming a big Spiritbox fan.
I am pretty sure Mike also writes all the drums too, which David called out as well. This is Spiritbox's world now.
Best reaction as always & explanation of instrument. Especially the keyboard part from you, is awesome 🤩 👏
I'm new to the channel but I really appreciate you playing the piano and breaking down the song during the reaction.
Your reactions are such a source of positive energy for me. Thank you

YES, ABR!! One of the most talented & consistent bands in the scene

You're right. But then there are bands that do that but still leave room for solos like Arch Echo, almost like progressive metal "jazz".
My favorite vocalist at this time. Singing along with her is morphing my voice in a good way 🌬️🌊🌊🌊
love the piano cam!
This song is about her long battle against depression, hence the different stages in life shown in the video.
Woah you're talented as hell! Thanks TH-cam algorithm! Instant subscribe!

Good point about the "band sound" vs individual stand out moments.
It took me less than 2 seconds to fall in love with that chorus and put a sad face.
I have a weakness and it is that iv-VI proggression.

Me neither. I would have preferred the vocals up a smidge in the verses though.
