      @Intruder What he’s basically saying When they shot the Lithium battery it makes an electric fire and when you douse it with water it increases the flame. A regular fire is like putting a match on paper, you can drown that with water but in an electric fire you can’t

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Dank Tank Technically they're the exact same. LiPo, known fully as Lithium Polymer, is literally just the lithium ion cells that are folded and then wrapped in a _polymer_, aka flexible plastic, compartment. In traditional lithium ion batteries, the cells are wrapped up like a fruit roll-up, and then inserted into a metal cylinder. It's super fascinating but chemically speaking there is zero difference between LiPo and Li-Ion.

    This phenomenon has never been seen before, and man does not know what to do.
    The fire is amazing beyond their imagination.

    As soon as I saw that design I knew it was gonna have issues. Tried to design one of those tensioned wire dollys a few years back, not easy. Think you will need a larger diameter wire for the two longitudinal tracks if it's gonna work.

      By the way, that design is horrible, too much cable tension everywhere, the dolly will be super hard to move, better switch to pipes or bars instead of wires.

    • @djbro808
      @djbro808 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why don't they have some support (tubing, wood, etc.) on the second axis (the one where the camera sits on) between the two blocks of wood that move along the first to keep it at the correct tension, therefore the tension isn't on the cables. You'd have yo have the peice be the right size to keep the tension, but that wouldn't be very hard. It should be able to keep the tension without putting any tension on the cables that are coming from the wall. Pipes or Bars would've been the best initial system though.

    • @Emilyogel1
      @Emilyogel1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I personally would have used some 8020 extrusion that was bolted to the wall to the only thing actually suspended would have been the cross rig, also doing it this way would have allowed for a much more weight capable system.

    I vote for a GIF making tutorial. Or ANY tutorial from Corridor really.
    Also, Wren in a Waldo costume? Halloween, 2nd Waldo video, or really really old footage during the first 360 Where's Waldo video era? Third possibility seems extremely unlikely given the post-insulation office layout (and old BTS footage being deleted). So that leaves the other two. Or Wren just wants to look like Waldo for fun on Halloween week. Probably that one. Good cosplaying though.
    And as always, happy to see more meta-BTS segments. Looking forward to seeing the conclusion and solution to the top-down camera rig.

    I would highly recommend going the rail route with the workshop top-down rig. Take the sag out of the cables, can be wood or steel angle with some sort of screw wedge system on one end of each rail so you'll be pushing out against the wall instead of hoping to see how much weight your wall hardware can hold under tension. If you're concerned with noise, foam between the rollers and the rails could help silence movement and smooth out the ride.

    You can use a James Cameron kind of 3D rig to shoot mix-reality without a green screen.
    Add a periscope to the camera. Add a thermal or inferred camera at one end of the periscope so the filmed shots to have the identical image. Then use the thermal or inferred data to mask out anything that isn't giving off a human level of heat signature. Apply the masking data to the normal footage and place the mix-reality stuff in the background.
    This is a lot of work, but you can shoot the VR player from any angle and without the need of a green screen.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I promise you that this wouldn't work as well as you think it would.

    • @ArchOfWinter
      @ArchOfWinter 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it because of the resolution differences between the thermal or regular camera or is it because of the inconsistency with back ground heat source?

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** This is the sort of thing that works in theory but it won't work either. With photogrametry you get baked in lighting, but while filming, every inch you move whatever surfaces the camera sees reflects a slightly different amount of light, so it won't match up perfectly. I've tried working with difference mattes a LOT over the years and they only every work good enough for quick shoddy jobs.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ArchOfWinter That's just not what a thermal camera should be used for. I see what you're getting at though, but things like clothes abscure the amount of infrared you emit, and things like your headset/straps/shoes/controllers won't emit anything usable. And this is assuming your lens pass-through system is flawless and that your thermal camera matches the framerate and resolution of the RGB camera, which can cost dozens of thousands of dollars and are not small.
      Besides, the mixed reality that James Cameron used _did_ involve green screens. The only times it didn't were when he was shooting actors doing motion capture. In theory you can create a depth matte from shooting in 3D with 2 cameras, but that's a length process too.
      All you need is depth information. If you were shooting this with a Kinect camera, then yeah that's quite feasable! But the Kinect camera is still kind of low quality and the depth matte you get from it will still require a LOT more work than just simply using a greenscreen.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** The pixels have to be identical for them to cancel out, and very close for you to fudge a difference matte into place. By the time you go through all the effort of creating a flawless photoscan of the room (something that is incredibly difficult) and somehow manage to replicate the lighting system perfectly (something that is practically impossible with current technology), you could've rotoscoped every shot for every video you'd want to do this with anyway haha.
      So yeah, in theory, if you tried really really hard, yeah you could maybe manage it.
      Now as far as comping in a photoscan AS the background, that could work! However, currently SteamVR only kicks out a background and foreground around where the headset is, so you'd get everything from the game behind the headset, including the game world. So that'd overlay on top of the photoscan anyway haha.

      @greyfireocelot6140 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep... Also, there is a reason huge lift cranes (like those on rails) use huge beams and motors that drive it across the rails mounted to or made into the beams.... Wire is just not rigid enough to support much of anything horizontally.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a science geek myself, I can assure you that this is totally fine. The amount of lithium in a LiPo battery is less than 2%. It's mostly just carbon and nickel. And low and behold, water put the fire out just fine.

    • @DasEtwas
      @DasEtwas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      wrenthereaper yeah i know its just a little lithium but still maybe they shouls have gotten an extinguisher

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps we should have. But it wasn't a big deal. We knew it'd burn itself out before any harm could be done. The water just doused the remaining burning items.

  • @Balomis
    @Balomis 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haha as soon as I saw your plans for the top-down rig I knew there would be problems with the tension on perpendicular axes. But still, it's cool you guys thought out a plan and tried it out, that's how we all learn!! Like Wren said, poles would work better, but you can keep the cable system for the one axis. That way you can have your X movement on the cables you have already setup and connect those carriages with rods for your Y movement; best of both worlds! Keep up the great content, love seeing what you're up to!

    There's a lot of cheap and lightweight piping that you guys could use for the rails: pvc pipe, vinyl or steel electrical conduit, copper piping (super lightweight but expensive), or even wooden dowels. Excited to see what you guys come up with!

    I also would've suggested the Pole system over the Wire System first.
