I just want to point out I this was a bad explanation of CCV function. The purpose of CCV is to collect unwanted combustion gasses that leak past the piston rings into the crankcase (including the oil pan, the valve covers and front and rear gear cases) This is NOT harmful to a modern diesel engine and no modification is needed. Mild buildup of grease will happen in the intercooler (not an issue) and soot buildup in the intake is unavoidable due to EGR. Messing with the CCV is a waste of time and money.
Secondly, For someone wanting to ad power to an ecodiesel ram or jeep, the legal way is to look for an emmisions friendly tuner, or the way most will go is to remove the DPF, SCR, and EGR. (I would if I had one. Lastly, in America and Canada the oil certification for diesels with DPF's is CJ4 or higher, rated by the API (American petroleum institute) and The viscosity rating varies. (Probably using a 5w40 full synthetic with CJ4 any brand is fine)
75$ for an oil filter is robbery.

I love the new Ram diesel, except to pay for the option in fuel mileage/def fluid/serivce savings over gas, you need to drive it for like 15 years. So really, unless it becomes more affordable, or price of diesel drops the same as gasoline the only benefit is towing which the hemi can do quite capably. If ecodiesel was a $1000-1500 option, it would be a no-brainer.

Oil filters can be purchased for about $30 US now. I use Kendall Gt-1 synthetic Euro (case of 12) that I buy from Amazon for about $80 shipped. So about $110 for parts... pretty reasonable for a diesel engine.

Great video! Nice to have an honest, real world review of the truck, by someone who actually knows something about it and can articulate it. Dodge is moving forward and making the trucks that we want, but they just have too many small annoying issues for me to buy one yet. Hopefully they can improve their build quality over the next few years.

I expected this. A bunch of first time diesel buyers who don't know anything with "complaints". Funny how the long term reports on these in the magazines haven't had an issue. And they love to bash Chrysler products. My neighbor has 2014 Ecodiesel, his daily driver and tows his 1/4mi car during the season. 19,xxx miles already and not a single issue. It's a non story. I just left a CJDR dealer as a parts guy, they haven't had any blow by issues on these.

I would suggest that you will give Chrysler a reason to op-out of any engine warranty if you use Rotella T6. I spoke with the engineers at Shell and they indicated that Rotella T6 is not a replace for ACEA -C3 or the Spec fro Chrysler MS-11106 but that Pennzoil has an oil that is a replacement it is named Pennzoil PlatinumEuro-L.

Hey pal, like your video - it's different and seems genuine -here's my experience: my BMW 2017 X5 Diesel costs $250 CAD for oil change and so does my 2018 Ecodiesel Outdoorsman (BMW covers the first 3 but RAM doesn't) but cost is pretty much standard with diesel engines - Your DEF consumption at the end is close to normal but it varies not only with breakin but also with your driving habits and how hard you run it (both my BMW diesel and Dodge act the same) - PCV and Catch can points you mentioned though could be secondary to something else - either mine doesn't have it (yet) or you are an unlucky one or you played around too much ... Overall though this engine is worth the money I'd say especially if you're hauling - I opted for the 3.92 ratio and 44-45 box that's in Outdoorsman trim, so that the engine isn't stressed as much when I tow or put load on it - I know Limited and Big Horn's usually come with 3.55 and always with 44-44 box that could stress your engine more under high load....

No other 1/2 ton has such an efficient diesel. Here in Canada diesel is about 15% cheaper than gas and if drive 20000kms plus a year diesel makes a lot of sense. I'm thinking of getting one myself, sure a Tundra holds value better but you are spending 17000$ every 100k kms while you spend about 8000$ every 100k on a Ram Ecodiesel. Plus its a lot cheaper with them offering 10grand discounts these days.

Don't decide to buy a truck until you go and drive any of the diesels. Diesel engines are 40% more fuel efficient, huge torque compared to gas, they heat less since more of the fuel is transformed into power rather than heat, more efficient more durable when it comes to towing, who tells you otherwise hasn't had a modern diesel. Big trucks are diesels and will never be gas again. A nissan titan 5.0 Diesel is another option if you feel the ram 3.0Diesel is underpowerd for your intents.

I have to say, I’ve been thinking about an eco diesel, but after hearing all this bs, I feel a great Hemi engine sound better all the time! If you really need to save gas get a very good Pentastar if your not towing more than 3k or so. But if you need to tow get a Hemi! Or a Chevy! With the Max Tow Package 5.3, 4x4AWD, that comes with 3:73 gearing. Oh wait a minute! The hill assist mode only helps keeping you from rolling back in a hill for s few seconds as you take your foot off the brakes to hit the fuel pedal!

Do you homework people and stay away from the ecodiesel. They don't
take the little added cost to key the cam gears, but instead just
tighten them down with a bolt that will eventually allow the valve gear
to slip and thus the motor blows.

Ecodiesel not worth the extra money. My 2013 Ram 1500 Crew Sport 4WD Hemi is averaging 10.2L/100 and thats since new. Only way the Hemi makes 10L/100 is driving flat highway at 90km/hr
No way can you run 25,000 miles on an oil change, especially on a gasser, the combustion gasses make the oil too acidic, and will cause premature failure, plus I dont trust a company that Chrysler doesnt allow to make ATF4, that just tells me their processes are inferior.

Your never going to get rid of that blow by. Check any benz 3.0L same exact issues, combine this with EGR emissions systems on these small diesels along with dime size intake ports, you will have switch over faults which will occur from vario flaps in the manifold hanging up on carbon build up (best part itll happen after warranty CHACHING). Its going to have oil cooler problems/leaks. Exhaust temp sensor failures will happen as there are more than likely 7 sensors. I like the idea but the technology isn't there for small displacement diesels with the current emissions on them vw, benz along with bmw have already proved this. Ram for your sake I hope Fiat worked the kinks outta that motor that was designed for GM by VM Motori. Its just simply too similar to the OM642 benz motor. God bless and good luck Dodge with VM Motori, as Nissan pulled a fast one on cummins should have never let that happen! All those Dodge fans that bought just for the cummins well the door has just been opened! That 5.0L that's going to be in that Nissan will be 5 times more reliable than this VM Motori for 1 simple fact it wont have small intake ports that clog up every 40K.

That's why Benz is extending the warranty on the Add blue systems in the sprinters along with the intakes and oil cooler leaks due to lawsuits! Is yours a OM642 E28 or E32? Good luck with the Ram hope it works out for them and you!

      AJ Spang
AJ you might look into an AirSep by Walker Engineering to reduce the amount of oil going back into the intake. They were originally developed for older diesels, especially two stroke Detroit Diesels, to separate the oil from the air coming out of the crankcase vent, returning the oil to the crankcase and the air out the blowby tube. Detroits were notorious for slobbering oil because of the two stroke design. I don't know whether it would effect your warranty but I sure think it would eliminate the oil going into your intake. My biggest worry would be the oil getting into the intercooler.

That's exactly what I am worried about. Thanks for the info. I'll be checking into that alternative. I definitely need something to capture and the oil and diesel passing through that line.

italians can't design good diesel motors and now chrysler/ram are destroying their reputation because of this specific diesel engines.

16 bucks for 1 liter of oil? What a bargain, 1 liter of oil for my 1,6 TDI Golf costs 32 Eur at dealership - that's 40 dollars mate (of course I don't buy it there...). Anyway, i really like your video, also like the truck but I prefer gasoline engines - V6 or Hemi. They're maybe less fuel efficient but absolutely more reliable and much more "issue proof".

Wow when you put it in that perspective we are getting a bargain. Thank you for the info. What country are you in?

Hi AJ, I'm in Slovakia but it's almost the same in the whole Western & Central Europe - car makers are making biggest profits on servicing, not on car sales. Btw. how's your RAM going?

Why do you always use the word "issues" instead of "problems"? An issue can be a positive or a negative item, but you always use it in a negative way. Just say "problem" and everyone will know it is a negative.

euro diesels will never be reliable in the new world because of the greater distances a vehicles travels on a daily basis and on trips. in europe everything is near by because of the small physical geographical areas.

Typical new North American product, don't buy it for at least the first few years, for the most part they should have most of the problems addressed.
For the big difference in Canada on the price to a Hemi, diesel costing more per litre, and extra cost on the maintenance.
Your wasting your money buying this truck, better off with the Cummins for towing needs and reliability.
I have a 2013 Tacoma, I know the only complaint about the Toyota Tacoma is it is dated, doesn't have the frills and extras that Ram has, but I have no issues with 20, 000 kms on my 2013 Taco.

***** I was with understanding the engine is from Fiat, I'll do more research, but if that is the case it is from Mercedes. Sounds like Mercedes unloaded the diesel engines just to get rid of them?

***** However, over all it is a Chrysler product and they can be a hit and miss when it comes to quality.

LOL, PCV valve on most diesel trucks?? I hope no one takes this guy as a mechanic, and listens to what he says. EVERY vehicle has a PCV valve. My 05 v8 Hemi does, my 95 Dodge did.

    • @ajspang4291
      @ajspang4291 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Your right I am not a mechanic but I do know that all diesel diesel engines are not equipped with a PCV system. Saying that in the video would just be wrong since big rigs use a draft tube design and diesel engines before 2004 weren't required to have a PCV system. Check the history of the system and you'll see that there are many different set ups to the design and do not use a valve.

LOL, NO diesel engine has a PCV system, gas engines are different from diesel engines. Gas engines produce vacuum, diesel engines do not, therefore a pcv system does not work. It dosnt take a mechanic to know that. diesel engines have either a CCV or OCV system. closed crankcase ventilation or open crankcase ventilation.

i've seen the junk Chrysler made in the past.
