Hmmm... interesting. I am going to look into that. Wouldn't surprise me - don't we always go thousands of miles to see something that is literally on our doorstep!!??
Vanishing lakes are quite common in the West of Ireland where they are called Turloughs. They are a seasonal phenomenon, observable in Winter and draining in the Summer. They are not common in the North, East or South of Ireland and only one is known in the UK (in Wales). Check out this youtube video of Rahasane Turlough in County Galway (West of Ireland) showing the lake both full and empty: Rahasane Turlough - Disappearing Seasonal Lake
Loved driving past this a kid. It's not seasonal (we don't have seasonal. WE joke we don't have seasons in NI) it's because of the lake bed. "The secret behind Loughareema’s vanishing act is the fact that it sits on a leaky chalk-bed, a topographical feature called the ‘chalk ‘plug hole’. The hole sometimes gets jammed with peat, causing the depression to fill with water, which is when the lake is visible to all. When the plug clears, all the water in the lake drains underground at a rapid rate, so no one could ever know about its existence if they hadn’t seen it before." www.odditycentral.com/pics/loughareema-the-vanishing-lake-of-northern-ireland.html
Very interesting. I think I remember my grade 10 geography teacher talk about a similar phenomenon in Ontario, it was on a field trip.
Now I know where the set dance came from.
Victoria Elisha lmao that’s why i’m here
There is an Irish contemporary set dance about this lake entitled, "The Vanishing Lake."

Very cool; thanks for sharing. This particular lake is actually in the North of Ireland, though.
This lake is in Co.Antrim therefore that makes 2 in the UK....this one and the one in Wales.
