Once you go international stock you don't go back, you could say (specifically US). It's unfortunate to say as well, because New Zealand has a lot of untapped potential.
I really want to invest locally but it's hard to do that when you are sorely disappointed by the returns and immediately go back to the US or Western/Central Europe because of it.
It's unfortunate too because investing in NZ companies as a local provides you a lot of benefits, namely almost non-existent tax on capital gains. It just seems like we are too focused on real estate here, when we should be focused on more productive assets like company stocks.

I have been discouraged by the lacklustre performance of the NZ, Aus and Chinese markets. I'm using Sharesies to experiment with US investments, but timidly, on a very small scale.

You just can’t beat the S&P 500 returns, the market goes up and down the best time to buy is when it is down because it’s always going to go up while the US $$ is the reserve currency of the world, and the biggest economy of the world.
