    As a Guyanese, Guyana needs to reduce corruption and strengthen it's institutions in order for us to prosper. Corruption needs to be eliminated, our police force, army, public services etc. are all weak and recieve extremely low salaries although we have been pumping oil for years. Imagine a police or teacher earning less than $500usd per month with rising prices..

    I lived in Guyana for a year when I was 10 years old in 1995. Guyana was so poor when I lived there and it was a perfect example of what happens when your infrastructure collapses and corruption takes over. I would love to see the region at least catch up with it’s neighbors. I really hope this works out, but with the levels of corruption in the government who knows what will happen.

      You know something I am tired of people saying that Guyana was so poor so poor. Well let me tell you something I could remember 1995 I was in primary school around that time. And I remember $ I remember playing $1 for a plate of food at my school canteen when I used to live on the Linden Highway kurukuru. Today a dollar we don't even spend that since you break a 5,000 dollar bill it's finish and you don't even see what you buy with it. Right now prices are escalating for everything especially fresh food like greens right now I live like a true Americana I eat everything out of a can it's cheaper for me.

    When its neighbor, Suriname, got independent in 1975, it was the richest country in South America.
    Hydro power for the aluminium industry, good roads, education and health care. Mismanagement and greed from corrupt government and military has brought the country down. Half its population now lives in the Netherlands and the country is poor. People from Guyana used to work in Suriname, that's going to change the other way around. As long as it lasts.

      Guyana used to be prosperous until gaining independence then went downhill after nationalizing foreign assets. The country may consider using some of their new financial windfall on developing an ecotourism industry to show off their natural wonders in the rain forests and mountainous regions. Those are far away from the farming and mining operations.

    • @Dark6997
      @Dark6997 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@winstonmaraj8029 first of all is Mongolian stock how you refer to east asians? Secondly there are countries that I do have hopes for example I have hope that Rwanda can continue its success and become a very successful country, Paraguay I believe may be able to better themselves, I think even India has a better hope of leveraging its large population and resources to turn itself into a succes. My doubts of Guyana come down primarily to the leadership, the culture rampant in the political class and the tribalism among the electorate giving me low hopes to a change in the political climate.
      Even then I don't doubt Guyana can become a wealthy country I just am not sure it won't fall into the traps that many countries that fall into sudden wealth do where either the wealth is squandered or it only benefits the politically connected. If becoming rich in 5 years is truly the idea of those in charge and not just a catchy title for this video that makes me worried about how much they'll be spending.
      Still there moves with the sovereign wealth fund and plans to invest in health and education give me hope that it will actually turn out well but until I see more I'm not holding my breath.

      Paraguay, as most other Latin countries has the ingrained Hidalgo Syndrome and most likely not make it.
      I wasn't being derogatory to East Asians-my great gran mum was actually if that ilk.
      But my greater point still stands-the almost genetic pessimism of the dark folks. A good friend of mine from the same stock like me bet that Fusion would take another 30 years for a breakthrough the week before there was that long hoped for ignition.
      Do a little research by ethnic groupings and see for yourself. The songs speak for themselves-a longing for heaven and leaving vs actions to better the world we live in. Another bet-none of the breakthroughs that matter will ever happen in LAC, Africa, South or South East Asia.

      @@winstonmaraj8029 you claim I have pessimism for dark folks when I literally pointed to some that I think have good chances. Also I never said anything about Rwanda's political freedoms or free speech but the government has made impressive moves economically. As for the rest of this there's too much to go over so I won't bother addressing it all. I don't know what fusion has to do with any of this that seems like the most irrelevant topic here. The only thing I can see based off your next comment is that you're trying to say most nuclear physicists are dark? Correct me if I'm wrong about what you're saying because that's not true and irrelevant to anything I'm talking about.
      Although to add to that you seem to think I don't have hope for Guyana because the people are dark. First I have hope they're just not high. Second that's not at all why it's from the political, social and developmental problems of the country and from the fact that often times when countries get rapidly wealthy due to natural resources it's often squandered. Even if the government ends up using the wealth for good they often initially squander it before the right people come along and changes the operations of things. When I say squander I don't even just mean stealing money or giving it to their friends but we've seen examples of well intentioned projects that lack the proper foundation that just end up wasting the money. Just look at Venezuela's previous infrastructure projects the right people understood how to improve the country weren't in charge and while there were some benefits to the infrastructure projects it over all was a waist of money.

    I’ve been to Guyana a few times and lived for 15 years close to its border with Brazil. Unfortunately, I must say that I doubt Guyana will become a developed country anytime soon. If that is to happen, they must learn from Venezuela, which had great infrastructure but never solved social problems such as income inequality and the lack of economic diversification.
    If the Guyanese use the oil wealth to fund economic diversification, and manage to radically decrease crime and corruption, maybe they have a shot at becoming rich.

      Seeing as less than 7% of the country are even old enough to remember colonialism and around a quarter of the country is under the age of 18 they dont have any excuses for shaking off the colonial mentality. It's less a mentality and more about corruption in the government.
      For a comparison 60 years after the end of colonial rule the US had reached the Pacific coast and was becoming one of the worlds most powerful countries, South Korea was the worlds 16th largest economy and rapidly growing, Taiwan was experiencing a similar rise (GDP roughly doubled from 1995-2005 for example), India became one of the worlds greatest powers within 60 years even leading the non alignment movement of the Cold War, and just 30 years after independence most of the Warsaw pact and former Soviet states are wealthy and successful, and even Poland who spent most of the last 300 years split apart and experienced one of the worst genocides of the last century.

    They should spend their oil earnings on more things they can export, such as making aluminium from the bauxite, rather than selling the raw material, and then building up their manufacturing. If they have water they have hydroelectricity, which is what is needed to cheaply turn bauxite into aluminium. Where there is bauxite there is often tungsten and gallium. They could also turn cane sugar into ethanol, which can then be turned into biofuel and alcoholic drinks using their abundant water source.

    As someone who lived in Guyana for a number of years, I can tell you every time the country has gotten an influx of wealth it has been pocketed by those in power who then use it to flee the country and live prosperously elsewhere. They do not invest it within their own country, and seeing as most of the same political figures who were there when I lived there are STILL there, I don't see why this will be any different. More Guyanese live outside Guyana than live in it. Anyone who can afford to gets the hell out.

    The key to making this work is to NOT just give money to the people, or subsidize low food or energy po rices. That will just create a class of rich lazy people like in Saudi Arabia, who view those benefits as entitlements, and will riot when the "goodies" are discontinued (when the price of oil goes through a down cycle). State oil revenues need to be used to 1) fund infrastrastructure (roads, schools, hospitals, telecommunications), with strong ROIs at a sustainable level, and with almost all of the manual labor done by Guyanese at a living wage, 2) create a sovereign wealth fund for a rainy day, 3) provide tax benefits and subsidies for foreign investments in the types of industries that employ Guyanese, preferably not resource extraction. The jobs created must be overwhelmingly for Guyanese people, and foreign investors should be forced to train Guyanese up the technical ladder. Allowances can be made for skilled foreigners in the beginning, but the pathway should be for them to be eventually replaced by Guyanese, as the Guyanese are trained and educated. Don't invest too much money directly into the country too fast, because it will only be wasted, and funnelled into corruption. What's not invested directly into the country can be invested into the sovereign wealth fund.

Trinidad and Tobago Govt gave the Guyanese govt. $500 Million USD from the oil revenue, during the eighties. Lots of Guyanese came to T&T looking for a better life.

    Another way for Guyana to generate lots of revenue: incentivize construction of aluminum smelters that use the bauxite you mentioned at 5:18 (Guyana is still a significant producer, exporting mostly to the US) with the hydroelectric power you mentioned at 17:05 as the energy source. Aluminum production is incredibly energy intensive, accounting for around 2% of global emissions. Some major producers have recently moved to powering their smelters with renewables, cutting three-quarters of emissions and allowing them to charge a premium for "green aluminum". No reason Guyana can't achieve the same with a bit of forward planning and the appropriate incentives to investors. It would be a natural supplier to its South American neighbors too.

      Another words Guyana still has a lot of her green spaces in tact and hasn't been screwed up, let's say, like Ethiopia so put all that ugly stuff like aluminum, power lines and pipes, smelters, you know the really ugly destroying mess so I don't feel like I screwed her over so when I really go in their to screw her over I won't feel like I've done something bad. Did I pretty well tell you what you are trying to say. After looking at time 17:05 that's all you saying.

      @@valeriewickerson-august7474 That's not what I was saying at all. I was replying to a video entitled "How Guyana plans to get insanely rich..." by pointing to another obvious way in which Guyana could generate revenue and employment if it wished to go that way. Guyana is a sovereign country, if it doesn't want aluminum production on its territory, that's its right.

    Most oil rich countries have squandered the wealth, neither investing in technological upgrades nor helping the population. The government needs to make low interest loans to many large and small businesses in varied sectors. If they aren't careful, the skilled, educated people will be concentrated in energy and government. Making farms more productive and sustainable, protecting small businesses manufacturing items for local consumption will keep the less educated gainfully employed. Allowing cheap imports from Asia will ruin local businesses.

    Hi im Trinidadian. Guyana is a nation linguistically, culturally and demographically very similar to our island. I've been there many times and I also have distant relatives on the beautiful nation. Trinidad is also extremely close and was once connected with land between Venezuela, with a lot of Venezuelans flocking to our small island to find a better life from their government, and this is responsible for causing a lot of controversy in recent years. Its so outrageous how the Venezuelan government want to occupy the protected land of Essequibo to exploit it of oil and minerals despite it having no historical ties to the people here.I pray for peace in the region.

    • @ubaldogandica8654
      @ubaldogandica8654 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Trinidad and Tobago once was a part of the General Captancy of Venezuela during the Spanish Empire. Later the British occupied the island.
      Also part of the information you are providing is not correct. It may be certain if you talk about the territory from/beyond the eastern coast of the Essequibo River. In fact, It is not called Essequibo. No, It is just Guyana, and the rest of the Guyanas at the east, including Surinam.
      On the other hand, if we talk about the western coast of Essequibo River, namely the lands taken by the Spaniards from the river to the west is called Essequibo territory only or "Guayana Esequiba" as we know it in Spanish, and not the territory beyond the eastern coast. The Essequibo territory is a very old Venezuelan claim, and it is time that justice takes place.
      It is necessary to precise this in order to avoid important mistakes. Regards.

      @@pedrovlogsviajeros5521so many… you have to google General Captancy of Venezuela or “Kingdom of Venezuela” and look at the map back 1777, when Spain delimited the borders to have a better administration. Trinidad was part of Venezuela but in 1797, the British invade and conquered the island. Meanwhile in this Guyana situation, was diferent because Venezuela declared their independence in 1811 when the territory of venezuela include the land up to Essequibo River.

We dont have historical ties with the people in the Essequibo is fault of United Kingdom UK they fraudulent apart us from our territory by a fraudulent arbitration because they invade a make a map when was very clear that Spain delimited those borders in 1777. UK like always stole the territory
