  • Kathina is an event of celebrating the Buddhist monks and nuns completing their rain retreat for the year. A rain retreat is when monks or nuns focus on their training at their monasteries and avoid non-monastic activities away from the monasteries.
The photos of Kathina celebration in 2016 were provided by the following Buddhist centers:
    1. Bodhinyana Monks Monastery at Serpentine
    2. Cambodian Buddhist Society of Western Australia at Kelmscott
    3. Dhammasara Nuns Monastery at Gidgegannup
    4. Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara at Kenwick
    5. Tisarana Buddhist Association of Australia at Forrestfield
The accompanying music is a rendition of a popular song. It starts with a non-distinct tune but slowly becomes a recognizable song at the end. It illustrates that simply looking at a small portion of a subject cannot be relied upon to represent the complete picture. One has to be patient in observation, be mindful and be analytical in order to confidently know the subject. This is like a reflection of the Buddhist practice.

    Namaskara,
Kathina กฐิน is known to be a very important merit making ceremony. Ata-pirikara is offered to the monks multiple times in a year, but seems to be less important than when it is offered during the Kathina. Would you please kindly explain.
