Junior….they are original only once, it think it would be a shame to blow this car apart, however, it’s not my car, the owner can do whatever he, or she wants to with it. I know you said you searched for months for this car, but perhaps there would be a better candidate that’s still out there, waiting for your magic touch rather than messing with this one, just my opinion

I’m sure that you’ve heard it said, “it’s only original once.” The purist motto.

  • @kdsdar

First it’s the owner’s car. They can do what they want with it. Second, NCRS is not “telling” you what to do - recommending, yes, telling you, no. No one from NCRS is going to bring charges against you. I think you’re missing the intent of maintaining an “original” car. The car can be used as a benchmark for future reference. It’s only original once. Some folks value this type and condition car more than one that’s been over restored. These condition cars can also be an excellent platform for restorations back to showroom new. Again, it’s the owner’s car. They can do what they want with the car, just document the hell out of it before disassembly!😎

I agree with you. There were 27000 plus Corvettes built in 1966. What the Bloomington awards do is make this Vette a no drive vehicle. When this Vette was built & sold it was a sports car to be driven. Have you ever seen 27000 autos together in one place? That’s a lot of cars.

I agree with you Junior the car will good for at least 60 to 70 years more after you restore it. The way it is it wont last more than 10 years. With a C2 you want it to be at its best always.

Restored Corvettes are a dime a dozen. I am confident that this Bloomington Gold, Benchmark and an NCRS Top Flight Corvette will command a higher value, than a restored version of it. The owner should look for another Corvette if they wants perfection. If the owner does not care about originality, then why is it so important to find an original trophy blue Corvette. Your shop can make a show 66 trophy blue Corvette from another Corvette that would not be of this status. Sorry, many restoration shops would turn down this work, and suggest finding another example to restore. Awards or not, there are original cars that should be appreciated for what they are and left alone.

It takes a long time to understand and mature to the mindset of appreciating the awards that only original cars can achieve. You can restore it a hundred times, its only original once. You want chrome plated restoration that people at a parts store parking lot show will give you a $2 dollar purple plastic trophy? Or do you want a car that is recognized and validated by some of the most knowledgeable Corvette people in the world as a car that sets the standards of originality? Theres a million restored Corvettes, only a handful of originals.

      @HorsepowerWarehouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well said Mr. Genius, although I believe "benchmark" and "survivor" status should be reserved for only a few cars. If you are going to recommend a car be not touched, it had better be like the one in this link: www.goodingco.com/lot/1966-chevrolet-corvette-427-390-coupe/

“It’s only original once…” motto of the NCRS gang. These guys are well intentioned, but they speak of “investment values” and their cars are essentially ornamental and rarely driven.
The truth is, these C2s are 1960’s tech GM cars. They have a beautiful (in my opinion) shape, but there are many things that can be done using modern tech to improve these cars both mechanically, safety and beauty-wise.
Make them look better with modern paint. Make them drive better and more safely with modern mechanicals. Then DRIVE them, they are cars to be enjoyed! Then restore/refresh them again in a few years when they begin to look worn and run rough.
A C2 that is rarely driven is a sad Corvette.

I think maybe you are taking this message out a contact and reason why Ncrs are not telling you not to restore it in the best interest of Corvette purist they’re only original once Junior you do one heck of a job on the restoration not taken any credit away from you I love the channel but for younger generations that are wanting to know the originality how it come off the factory Assembly line if you restore one you can’t duplicate the exact way it come off the assembly line that would be like taking a Picasso painting and just using regular paint and duplicating it obviously it’s up to the owner it’s his car his decision

Kinda hard argument... A car is original once. as a time piece the car is extremely unique and its paint code matches its production. . If changing original factory to upgrading chassis, new engine parts, better re- paint.. why does it matter at that point that it matches it paint code on trim tags...If everything is taken apart to put back together, then why not rebuild a less valuable by a White '66 and just paint it trophy blue? thoughts

    Hey there Junior,
I think the rarity of the model would factor in the decision. I personally would think twice about messing with 427/435 or such. As far as I can see, there's nothing particularly rare or uber special about this one.
That being said, I'm on the fence about tossing an original chevy part in favor of a repro part.
But I don't own one yet, so it's hard to say.
    Take care,
    Dan

NCRS should develop a separate, but equal, category for C2/C3 cars that are judged in the same manner the existing Top Flight requirements stipulate, except relaxed regarding exact dating of factory and NOS parts/components. In addition, the new category would allow any factory option that 'could have' been ordered from the factory to be on the car. For example, a C2 with a 427/435 HP engine could not be equipped with AC as that was not a factory allowed configuration.
I believe this would encourage increased participation in NCRS Flight judging and other activities. I'm not suggesting any changes to the existing NCRS rules for those who want to have their C2/C3 cars judged against the strict, as built at the factory rules. But with no existing factory, 'as built' records for C2/C3 cars, unless an owner has the original documents (which is in a very low percentage of cases...and tank stickers are typically partially or non-legible or non-existent), it is commonly thought that many C2/C3 cars are being represented as 'as built' at the factory cars, when they are not/likely are not.
So why not take away the incentive to cheat and replace it with a judging category that encourages participation but also rewards restoration to the same factory configuration we 'could have' ordered? NCRS should add a Top Flight category for such C2/C3 cars and perhaps title it "Factory Configured". If any NCRS higher up would like some additional thoughts I have on this idea, please reach out. wayne.mackie@comcast.net

The car interior has been touched so the benchmark is out the window. But have to blame the owner. There is a place for benchmark cars-museum pieces. If the owner wanted a driver; whether numbers matching or not, he should have purchased one instead of a benchmark. Pass on the benchmark car and leave if for someone else to preserve it. Buy a driver in less than ideal condition, save some money and have Horsepower Warehouse go to town on it.

In 1980 I bought a 1970 442 Convertible in Matador Red and 110K original miles! It had been hot rodded a bit but paint was decent, interior very nice and when you stomped on the gas it smoked a bit. Anyhow for the first two years I just drove it and enjoyed it. I did some smoky burnouts on occasion and was the typical young man with a cool car. So to make a long story short it got some quarter panel damage in a small accident so I decided to blow the car apart and not only make it like new but better than new. It was apart for 2 years because that's how long it took for me to do it in my spare time and as the money came in. The engine was built to get more horsepower than original! The Matador Red seemed like an old dated color so I went with a Chrysler Garnet Red two stage Miracril paint. I added a W30 wing. When it was done it looked better than original and ran better too so I was very happy with the results. Back then basically all my friends were trying to make their muscle cars cooler than they were before so a lot of mods were done. So if that is what you want or in this case the customer I would say no harm no foul!

At the time they were built, gm didn't do anything extra as is being done now to preserve them. No powder coating, etc. They were everyday cars to drive, often a person's only car, and GM only wanted them to last 6 or 8 years so you could buy another one. Make them cheap and reap the profits. 75 to 80 year olds know what I mean. They depreciated so fast, people had 24 month loans so they didn't owe more than it was worth. Years later, people began to save them, but they're 65 years old now. Remember when 78 pacecars came out and dealers charging 50k? Now theyre everywhere with factory wrappers with low prices. Old guys, like me, like to see them saved, but people that weren't born yet are ok with mods or restoration. If the owner doesn't get it upgraded by you, he will pull it and take it where he can get what he wants, so you might as well do it. Judged cars are judged by people that were conceived in them and don't always agree how they should be. A 65 factory tour by my brother discovered that if they ran out of bolts, there was a hardware store across the street and they would buy them there. Then judges look at untouched cars and say things have been changed! Sorry it's so long, I'm 71 and now have the '65 my 81 year old brother ordered. So I have seen the days when most were driven, some saved, and a lot of them wrecked because you really could buy C2's for 500-700 bucks at one time. No disrespect Intended and hope none taken. Just reviewing my experience. Remember "save the wave" and Corvette News?

In watching a few of your videos, and this one today, it seems like there is a measurable amount of hesitation, since you're asking us! So to settle your conscience, why don't you put it up for sale, at a nice high right price. Let the market then decide if it should be restored or preserved. My bet is someone will pay top dollar for the way it is now. Seems to throw money away to spend 50 or a hundred grand or whatever you're going to charge, and it won't make the car really worth that much more. But if this was the guy's dad's car or something like that, and he's got the extra Dinero, and all other boxes above have been checked, then you are free to play rector set with it.

This would be enough for me to pass on purchasing this car. There was no doubt a premium placed on it for the awards and certifications which force you to maintain the car as is if you want to retain the value. I respect what Bloomington has done for the hobby and the Corvette in general. However, too much of anything can and will eventually be a negative. It's a rolling piece of art. Make it as reliable and safe as possible and enjoy it. If that means a frame off with other than factory finishing's, so be it. Car should be called the Bloomington Blues

It's the customers car. Put flares on it and a mod 70's air brushed dragon on the hood if he wants. Nobody from NCRS will come to his house and arrest him.

Restore the car if that what the owner wants. However it's mentality like yours why we have no original cars cars left in the hobby. All the restorers think they can build the car better than the factory and maybe they can. But once you restore this car it joins all the other classic cars that have been restored. Which makes it nothing special.

Also, Junior- you gotta trim the beard, dude. You’re a decent looking guy but that beard looks really scraggly. C’mon man.

If its been partially restored inside and part of the paint been touched up. Then its no longer a survivor to me - restore it.

Junior give it your special restoration and make it a better car. Your way will preserve the car far longer than leaving it untouched.

No offense, but if you're going to tell me not to restore my car, I had BETTER see your name on my car's title. If not, tough luck. Go reference the National Corvette Museum for your benchmark. Meanwhile you don't own my money or my property. Suck it purists.
