WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I kinda want to hear this dude explain other stuff. Like... just ask him "What is a chair...? Is there technically an objective direction of "up" beyond relative position and orientation? Do magicians tap into real magic? Thoughts on flying saucers?"

Honestly I'm confused why everyone says this. I haven't heard of him either and was amazed the fake "superman" was recognized.
Jesus Christ, this caller is a reminder to not take intelligence and critical thought for granted.
He's also part of the category of dishonest presup callers. People who call in and may entertain aloud that they "may be wrong," but do not actually believe that.
I have heard thus guy enough to know these guys could gather every piece of information possible, compile something for every point he has, and he'd still stick to the exact same belief.

"Hi Guys, I love god and i want to follow the word of god and no other, But.. it's really important to me
that i am following the ACTUAL word of god, so i'd like to ask you a question and i'd like an honest answer...
My questions are
1. Did you create this bible that i have in my hands ?
If they say YES...
2. So can you tell me..... IS THIS BOOK ACTUALLY AND LITERALLY THE WORD OF GOD ? "
the Answer to question 1 will be YES , Unless you called the incorrect publisher
The Answer to Question 2 is going to "No it's not LITERALLY the word of god"
and..that is all they have to do .
IT'S 1 PHONE CALL TO GET THE CORRECT ANSWER FROM THE SOURCE THAT CREATED THE BIBLE THEY ARE HOLDING IN THEIR HAND
This source is verifiable
The fact they created that bible is verifiable
Their are invoices to prove they paid for the materials
Business statements are available as public information
and you get told directly from the horses mouth as to whether it's god's word or not

Why has not 1 christian made that call when i have repeated this multitudes of times
Because
1. They know i'm not lying
2. They can take a pretty good guess as to what they will be told if they do
Basically... They don't want to make the call
I tried my ass off to help this caller when I worked with him to work through any portion of his shit. I worked with him for about a year and a half. It's challenging to work in the fields I do and not recognize specific speech patterns.
I commend everyone for the patience with 'Rob' and his other aliases; he has many strewn across the internet.

@@canbest7668 no. I professionally worked with this individual on a contract overseas. I'm not a counselor or a therapist. His and my role was biometric security and initial vetting interviews(as was the role of many others).
As an atheist I sincerely offer my condolences for you subjecting yourself to this nonsense that's what I would call "taking one for the team" I'm sure it was a mental & emotional strain to say the least🤣🤣🤣🤣

@RupertMay compassion and kindness necessarily have to be given freely without condition. I don't need to agree with "Rob" to have these with him. I know a great deal more about this person that I can not share. Suffice to say it's not a Disney movie kind of story. "Rob" has the same wants and desires as anyone else, he just doesn't trust the carrot to not be the stick when it's presented.

Honestly my favorite call on Talk Heathen, cause you have to do something drastic to get your point across. Ripping the bible apart literally? No one has that as a part of their stupid script.
Some conversations are really hard to listen to. Maybe even not worth having.
I live with my boomer evangelical parents to help them care for my handicapped brothers. I choose my battles all the time. Sometimes some conversations are more headaches than breakthroughs.

Deepity huh i hadn't heard that word before. I've gotta remember that for the next time someone spouts seemingly deep nonsense at me.
A friend's daughter of Daniel Dennett came up with that term, which he used in his 2009 speech at the American Atheists confernce. Deepity: In as far as it's true, it's trivial or obvious. In as far as it's profound, it's wrong or meaningless.
The example that Dennett used to illustrate a deepity is the phrase "love is just a word." On one level, the statement is perfectly true (i.e., "love" is a word), but the deeper meaning of the phrase is false; love is many things - a feeling, an emotion, a condition - and not simply a word.
Sorry if that came off as pedantic, i just wanted to make sure that we not only popularize great words such as this, but use it in its actual meaning. The internet definately has failed the term "trauma bonding" in that regard. Best of luck out there!

The hosts need to understand that Rob cannot absorb any concept that requires more than one sentence to explain.
His mental housing can only hold around 20 words of a conversation before the first start falling away.
Please assume none of them can comprehend paragraph questions, and word the questions like they are children, because they really are.

I have listened to enough conversations with this particular caller to take him off the board as a proper caller based on the fact that he is either a crank or he's unable to formulate any level of critical thinking. He's even called in once and proposed a "global conspiracy", I fail to see anymore why he's allowed on. I don't even count him as a possible "teaching moment" for anyone else with the things he keeps repeating.

Rob is trying to build a house (justifying his religion), and the hosts are telling him, “okay, what tools are you using to do that?”
So Rob takes his hammer, his hoe, his spade and he tried to build the house (he literally used those examples).
His arguments being flawed, they explain that you have to use the right tools, and he complains that he should be able to use ‘all of his tools’.
Good luck building a house with a hoe and a spade 🙄. It’s a great analogy for not using the right tools for the job, and using his own examples to prove he is doing it wrong.
Popularity doesn't make any thing true, holy books are falable. Sherwood forest and Prince John exists. Nottingham is real but it doesn't mean robin hood did.

You really need to chastise people at the beginning of the call, telling them they absolutely must not keep talking when a host is asking questions.
Not only are they ignorant, when they are talking their ears are completely switched off.
Perhaps an alarm noise that is loud on the callers end would work to interrupt their ramblings.

The willing dishonesty and willingness to ignore logic and reason make conversations with someone like Rob completely useless.
If an interlocutor refuses to be consistent and ignores logic whenever it suits them, progress cannot be made.

You are correct. There are about 2.4 billion Christians vs 1.9 billion Muslims though Islam is growing twice as fast as Christianity.

@realdaggerman105 it could be due to the fact that the statistic is almost always coupled with the fact that by 2050 or so that Muslims will outnumber Christians. I would assume they either misread the original statistic or they are misremembering it. That's just my guess though.

History, ok let's use history. Go back and peel the layers of Christian beliefs and apologetics and see if you can believe the same. Hammering the radical disparate views of the past doesn't fit and if you scoff at them keep in mind that the yet to be modernized version of apologetics will in the future scoff and you. What is the real truth past, present, or future? My take away as a history geek was no truth to be found.

Rob has the lost the ability to reason and has almost no ability to communicate. I don’t think this is an act.
That was the law of Moses. The law of Moses was fulfilled when Jesus Christ was born. Atheists claim that Christians are required to obey the law of Moses.
Paul explained the justification of the Law of Moses. The Isrealites had proven themselves incapable of obeying the higher law, so they were given a law of carnal commandments, which was a schoolmaster designed to bring them to the Law of Christ, which is a law of faith. The Law of Christ has two commandments. 1. Love the Lord thy God. 2. Love thy neighbor as thyself.
If atheists loved their neighbors, they would not be trying to persuade them to break the Law of Christ.
I'm paraphrasing because I don't recall the exact wording Rob used. So Rob believes there is only one god that manifests differently to the different regions which gives us the variety of religions. That sounds to me Rob is saying god has Disassociative Identity Disorder. Sounds to me like heaven might be paradise because everyone is on anti-depressants and other mood altering drugs.

I know why you guys take callers like Rob... an illustration for other people watching who may learn something Rob refuses to.
That being said, I also get to the frustration. Because after the 59th horribke argument with immediate refutation, you notice they're bad faith interlocutors even if they don't think so. And when someone is doing that, there is no changing their mind. Zeus, themselves, could appear to them during a storm and they'd either be extremely skeptical or say it's their god taking on form and speaking in riddles.
So it's frustrating to almost *know* you're not going to convince them untik they personally have brought whatever it is into question.
It's like a protectice coping mechanism. I've seen the same toolbox applied to other scenarios where their held beliefs are true regardless of the expertise in the field saying otherwise. One of the more extreme examples being Flat Earthers. Some of which explain its cult-like mentality and what the "idea represents."
We see it with homegrown self-proclaimed "experts" all the time. The confidence in their own ignorance is something I wish I could issolate and bottle. Like a "Simple Rick's" wafer cookie.
