I LOVE that you said the first year is learning what it’s not. Last year was my first year homeschooling, and I feel like learning that I don’t need to teach my kids someone else’s idea of a standardized education what the best thing I could have learned.

I think this is an awesome realization. Yes, we don't want to be homeschooling in fear--sometimes things happen and homeschooling no longer may be possible, but parents will know at the right time what the right choices are for their kids and their education!

Love this💕 So much wisdom! Thank you for sharing 💖
I did need to hear this, so much! I truly appreciate your time and encouragement! We just switched from a charter to a psa and it’s our second year with all of our kids homeschool and I am in this exact place! Thank you for all you do for us ❣️

There is SO much wisdom in this video! I am guilty of using that phrase and you are completely right - as a first-year homeschooler, it is a defense mechanism against failure. In reality, things don't go the smoothest and this has been a learning experience for ALL of us! I can't imagine sending my kids back to public school, though, so I know we are in it for the long haul...I just need to drop the shield and step into that confidence. Thank you for this!

YES! Thank you for sharing this mama! As homeschooling moms every single year brings new challenges, new obstacles and lessons learned... good and hard! I was guilty!!! ✋🤚🤚 1 year at a time! I never thought of it as fear... But YES! It totally makes sense. I was letting my fear dictate our homeschool! Wow! What I have learned in our 6.5 years homeschooling. Thanks for sharing this! Such truth in life! 💜💜💜

And yes, it may have never been our plan... But in fear! We don't know what the future holds. For me, I feel I wanted them to be on "pace" in case something life changing happened. We can't live in that fear! 💜

Wow! That’s perspective I’ve never heard and I’m guilty of this as well. This is one of my favorite of your videos! Please share more regrets because it sounds like I and probably other mom or dads can relate! I’m on year 3 with 2 kids and I never ever in my wildest dreams thought I’d ever homeschool, but here we are! I knew in my heart it was the right thing for us at the time, but you confirmed what was already in the back of my mind. That “taking it year by year” isn’t my true intention and that finishing curriculum just to complete my agenda is definitely not in anyone’s best interest.. Thank you for sharing!

I can't speak for everyone, but I come here for your opinions. Its great to hear what other homeschool mommas are thinking.
Also, girl I could have done this video practically verbatim! I wish every day I could take my oldest child's K and 1st grade year and re-do them. I felt forced to "keep up with state standards" "just in case it doesn't work" and harp on phonics rules etc, but it wasn't working with my child! What helped me come to the conclusion you came to? Hearing almost this exact speech from another homeschool momma!!! And then again from my chiropractor. (His wife homeschooled as well) I'm so so happy you put this out there for others. I think sometimes we really struggle with not doing what everyone else is, and sometimes just hearing someone say its ok to go another way is all it takes to free a person from that trapped thinking. Seriously, thank you for putting this out there, and please don't hold back from sharing. If you think its going to be controversial maybe just put the subject in the title so people who aren't interested don't click. You're always, always going to have haters no matter what you say, but I think most of us are here because we value what you have to say, even if we don't agree on every single thing always.

This video was soooo good for me to hear! Thank you for sharing this! We are going to start our homeschool journey with our 5 year old this year. I am so excited, but I have some health problems and in the back of mind I have been trying to find the perfect curriculum collection to make sure she is not behind just in case we have to put her into public school. It has been stressing me out! I love this so much! I need to not let this fear take a hold in my life and trust that God put us on this path and I need to enjoy the journey.

This was really good! I agree that if you don’t really think or live in the “what if” mindset your overall commitment, vision, choices, faithfulness, and perspective for homeschooling will have a different outcome. I also agree new homeschoolers need those two years! I think most moms start to feel the most confident at that 3yr mark. Thanks for sharing! ❤️

Thank you for this! I’m building my confidence as my second year of homeschooling comes to an end this summer. You’re so right on the year by year mind set because it won’t allow to plan ahead for things that we are just as capable of doing if we choose to! Don’t feel bad for making these “opinionated” video because they’re so raw and helpful to us mommas! 💞

  • @Mother_to_Mother
    @Mother_to_Mother 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much!
I didn't even recognise this but it exactly what I am doing! You're right, I'm making it may plan a effectively.
I have only just begun homeschooling my first of four, and really I would like to homeschool them all all the way through, and I most likely will! But I do exactly what you described, I say I'm taking it one year at a time in the exact same way! Defensively and also for myself as you said.
And it is negatively affecting the way I am homeschooling, I am doing things based on the what if track rather than following the ideal track which really I AM on!
    Thank you!
And yes! I moved country when I was almost 8 and that was a huge change in education levels and style and I moved schools once again after that and it's true if for some reason I did put my children into school they would be able to adjust, even if in some areas they were behind, especially because I already am committed to their education, so I could really work with them extra to catch up on what they needed.
But this really is such a big point, I see why its your biggest regret. It can ruin the way you homeschool, I want my children to have a love of learning and to enjoy the early years going somewhat at their own pace and just exploring with joy and wonder all the things there are to learn, if I have this wrong mindset in my head of having to always be following my back up plan I might as well be sending my children to school because I am constantly almost spoiling what I want by making myself a slave to what I don't want.. Its crazy of me! Thank you for making me aware of what I am doing! Haha

I'm definitely a all or nothing kind of girl! So when I took the leap to homeschool; I immediately assumed I would do it for all their years in some way or another...ie dual enrollment with a Jr college, or co-op, or internet classes. I just figured with so much available it wouldn't matter too much. But I'm also a see the big picture kind of girl. See, I needed to see where we wanted to end to know where to start in making a path to get us to the end goal. Now that doesn't mean I completely ditched, all thing public and private school "ways" altogether, though I wish I had! I mostly did, but not when it came to math, reading and writing! I wanted so much to prove myself to who...(myself...silly...I know). I pushed to hard and tried to do to much "public school" at home and that year was definitely figuring out what homeschooling isn't and honestly I needed a few more years to really see what it wasn't. Yep that's me...stubborn as a mule...got to make it work this way! God really worked and is still working on me through this homeschooling life. We have tried all the methods until I found that we don't fit into any of them really. But I have taken the gems I found in each that fit our family and made our own method, which consist of: interest-led learning, lots of read Alouds, small amount of independent work(math, copywork, spelling and reading) and a huge amount of free time. I really had to grow into this and yes it did/does come with the "oh my goodness if they had to be put in public/private school and are 6th grade reading, but haven't learned the multiplication facts yet!....aaaah...I've failed them!" thoughts! But the truth of the matter is I have taught them how to learn! They have been learning at their own pace when/ what they want/need to learn. So if the worst case happen and I couldn't homeschool them anymore; they would be able to pick up the pace and raise to the challenge. This video is great! I'm so glad you brought it up and I'm always up for a reminder that it's going to be ok and no matter what changes we/our kids face. You always seem to find the the root cause of issues and express them so lovingly and thought provokingly(if that a word...lol). I hope this really helps to free up others who may have this hold on their homeschool! I know when I truly let go of even the 3 R's in a grade level standard for my kids it lifted a huge burden off me! Thanks so much for sharing!

You are always the most careful with your word choices, very sensitively approaching subjects like this. ❤️
I will say I am completely guilty of this and didn’t even realize it. I have no intention of putting my kids back in public or private school, but I hold on to that and try to keep up with that. It’s caused quite a struggle for me and I know that translates to my kids. Very eye opening this morning.

such a good point. I say this to strangers and distant family as well but not because we actually are taking it year by year. I typically say it to get people to not give their opinion about middle/high school LOL. I don't live by that phrase though...we have been doing this for 6 years now and never have I tried to keep up with the public school. I do try to finish books but that's because I am type A and don't like to go into the summer with unfinished work.

I so agree with you!! This is our actual first year! I personally am going through the deschooling process, and even tho we are a relaxed homeschool, I am trying to get my kids into exploring their interests so that I can create those things into a unit study or just in general things we can use with our own curriculum! It's hard for them still because this is only the second month! But honestly I feel we've learned more in these past two months than they actually have in public school! You help me so much! I really appreciate your channel and your advice!!

If I had to match myself to public school every step of the way, I’d have to give up... I understand the stress of wanting to stay on track and Get Things Done, though ..it’s definitely a journey that you walk that is your own. Even when you’re behind, progress is progress...keep moving forward.

First thing I have to say, your first ad for me was a Planned Parenthood ad....so :(. I think this was a great video and had a lot of insight. Also I think that yes sometimes we do take it year by year but I also have to say that I think in a lot of places the public school system is "on fire" and time to get get the kids out. In which I mean if your a believer than you have to be so super involved in what your kids are being 'taught' from CSE to gender fluidy because there is an agenda to usurp parental rights. I personally haven't been too worried about how my children will measure up academically if they went to a PS, however I have worried about how they will fit in emotionally...being teased and bullied. It's hard but we give each day to the Lord and see what He wants for us.

This is really interesting! I taught in public school before having kids/homeschooling, but interestingly, keeping up with grade level isn't the reason I still think in a "taking it year by year" mindset. (This is only our 2nd year in, so we are still newbies). For me, it feels overwhelming to think that I will have to be this "ON"/have this little personal time until they're all out of high school, so I just don't go there. The lack of me time/constant task management (whether it's school, or running errands, or home management)...even with help from the kids and a supportive husband just gets to feel like A LOT sometimes. I'll be honest- there are days I miss being able to meet a girlfriend for lunch or coffee on a weekday. I miss adult Bible studies at church during weekday mornings. I definitely see my friends less. So in order for me to stay true to this calling, and keep my eyes on being joyful in what IS right now, I just keep pressing on in where we are NOW. My attitude tanks when I think in terms of "forever," and I am also such a planner- homeschooling (something I said I would "never" do) is definitely a way God is refining me and forcing me to rely on Him and not have a 5 year/10 year plan, etc. So in a lot of ways, taking it year by year is the BEST way for me to homeschool now, but I totally get what you're saying, too. 💗

Thank you! I really needed to hear this today. A friend recently decided to put her child in PS and it set off all kinds of panic in me - checking my motives for homeschooling - and questioning whether I am really adequate for this lifestyle compared to what our local charter school could provide for my child... and then wondering if my child could really handle grade level in school. My oldest child starts 6th grade next year and I am questioning everything.

Megan Bergstrom you know sometimes it’s really good to question our motives. It puts us in a humbling place and makes our reason for doing what we’re doing all the more stronger. You are invested in your child’s education, that makes you adequate. ❤️

  • @jamyelangley3740

It’s our first year and I totally get it! I said the exact same thing! God led us here for a reason and we will continue to follow. Some days I feel like a complete failure but I have to believe there’s a purpose and even on our worst day there is no where else I’d rather be. That being said I agree that the first year has been a little all over the place because I keep changing the schedule and the order of things so I’m trying to give myself grace and hope that maybe by next year I will figure out our “schedule” or just how I want things to go. I will say that if I don’t start with God first that the day is a mess and that’s the truth. I appreciate your videos so much and I think everyone needs to be reminded of this wherever they are in their own journey. Thank You! (Also I love your school favorites video’s, it gives me ideas of how to add more fun)

I homeschool my 4 kids and they have been in public school before. Well 3 of them have. This is our 3 year homeschooling and there is no way that they will be going back to public school if I can help it. We have an issue with public school teachers, that are also family members, quizzing our children every time they are around them on what all they are being taught. It is so frustrating to me!

Wow TFS this! If you knew me you’d know HOMESCHOOLING WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN AN OPTION FOR ME and now I wouldn’t have it any other way. We feel so strongly about our decision and at peace. I’ve said from the beginning that I’d love to keep going al the way, I have never said we’ll take it year by year. And it’s surprising to me that when I talk to ppl that homeschool or used to they all tell me: oh just take it Year by year. Or they say that my kids, who love homeschooling, might change their minds, to be open. I don’t want to be open . We honestly feel this is God’s plan for our lives. Why can’t ppl get that?

Megan I usually don’t post on random people, but your comment really stood out to me. My mom was a teacher then principal and retired now...and she is constantly asking do they know certain things that they focus more in public school. Finally one time she asked my son who is six how to spell words, and then the rhyming words and he shocked her! She has been quiet with her comments since then. Lol
