There are multiple emulators you could use to do this, but I use Mednafen. There are some Mednafen netplay tutorials on TH-cam if you wanted to look at those.
There is a reason for that. If both players hit the boss at the exact same time, it doesn't count as 2 hits. If the players hit the boss at slightly different times, chances are a lot higher that one player gets hit by an attack, because the boss always attacks just after getting hit.
