I’ve had a mustache on the inside of my finger for over 10yrs now and I remember asking my artist “why are you going so hard?” And they replied “cuz I want this shit to stay mf’er” 😂
shoutout to my (now) regular artist when I brought her a sketch I'd done a while ago and asked her to tattoo it on my arm. She basically told me "Cool idea, but if you want this as a tattoo I'll have to redraw it and it'll look pretty different in my style" I ended up trusting her bc I liked her other work and she completely changed the composition, just keeping the same subject. Absolutely love it it's one of my favorite tattoos (basically a snake morphing down into the handle of a blade pointing down my arm)
This is the way to do it. You show your artist what you want, and they do something based on the design. It shows that you respect their artistry and they are willing to work with you. Glad you love your tat and had a great experience.
The anti tattoo dad one kills me because my mom had it in her will that you are out if you had a tattoo. Ive always wanted one and I'm 25 now and I've brought it up to her a few times and every time she just started yelling. Just got a traditional Higgs-ish Druid with a tattered cloak with antlers today it came out so gnarly and I got home and saw this was uploaded. Perfect timing!
My mom had me in her earlier 20s and had 2 sleeves and a huge back tattoo and has always encouraged me to express myself. SOOO happy she didn't come from a more religious background
I'm an artist and I would never do an actual drawing and tattoo it on myself. Because I would absolutely hate my own art even a week after. That being said, if I wanted my own design, I would make something simple and cool that won't ever change in my head. Like words or a simple design that wouldn't change with my art skill.
yeahh.. no matter how good i get i know in a few yrs i'll either hate it or look at all the things i could've done differently. i would be depressed if i got something i drew 5 yrs tattoo'd, so i won't do it 2 myself lol. plus it's hard because we cannot look at our own art objectively, so it might actually be sh!t and we won't know.
I work in a nursing home, and a lot of them are in their 100s, and a lot of them are in their 70s 80s. And they where a bit stand offish a little bit but once they got to know me they became curious and started asking to have a looks and let me tell you, they absolutely love my full colour neotrad sleeve. 👌🇦🇺 sick video as always bro
Had my finger tattoos for 6 years, still looks amazing. I asked my artist that I trust before I got them and he said the ones that hate on finger tattoos just don't know how to do them and as it looks right now, he wasn't lying
My second tattoo is a hand tatto (the back of my hand). I have never been in as much pain in my life before so i never assume how the pain of a needle going in and out of my skin repeatedly will be based off the first 5 seconds. Love my tattoo though so much and the pain was definitely worth it 😂
I can look at a picture of a simple outline of a rose and draw it, but I definitely cannot tattoo it. Tattooing is an art in its own category. You can bring other types of art into it but some you can't, they just don't work as a tattoo. Our skin is not paper and it doesn't act the same. Some tattoo artists can tattoo a beautiful portrait, but I'm assuming the techniques of getting to the final result of a portrait are completely different on a piece of paper or even a painting. BTW I love this channel. Kirk is an awesome dude and has great opinions.
As an old tattoo guy..I turned down lots of tattoos because I didn’t like the design and the client wouldn’t change it to be a cool tattoo that would hold up over time. So I said no. It’s okay to just say NO.
I’m not here to defend arm-band tattoos but I am going to defend mine only because it was used to cover up a misspelled Latin phrase that I got around my arm at age 17 in a friend’s kitchen 😅 mistakes were made but these are the lessons we learn. It has faded and I hate it so there will soon be a cover up of a cover up and no longer will I be judged as an arm-band-traveller-person.
I feel called out! 😅 I literally just got my dogs ears tattooed on my leg. I traced them. The artist cleaned up the lines but I was also very meticulous about tracing them from the picture.
I think the worst thing for me about the birds in the first one is that theyre all in neat orderly lines with eachother, plus then theres like 10 in the corner just rolled up and crammed together. Still pretty bad design, but having them staggered more organically wouldve also helped MASSIVELY
Outlines suck the worst in terms of pain. Shading feels so much better. I usually start to nod out about 2 hours into a tattoo because my body puts out copious amounts of opiates to deal with the pain.
I just got a tattoo that I mostly drew up and gave it to my extremely competent tattooer and had him make it tattoo appropriate art then I told him generally where I wanted it placed and referred to his judgement. When it came to color I said I was completely undecided and he should go crazy. I absolutely love the outcome
My wife is a visual artist. So she does drawings/paintings and wooden dolls which people get painted with say them on their wedding day etc. She is happy to see your drawings and ideas. And then does what she wants. It is basically her only rule. People are sometimes irritated but hers always looks better even they end up amazed just how much better it is. She does crazy detail too. Like she mostly uses a toothpick to paint. Traditional indonesian wedding dresses arent plain white.... just give me photos tell me your ideas and like it or leave it. She's very successful.

She explained the reasoning to me and it was a great tattoo experience. It's my favorite and I get compliments on it all the time. So, sometimes, drawing your own tattoo can work to a degree.
To me the Arizona sun is worse than the Mexico one 😂. Probably because I prefer humidity. On another note, I have no tattos (yet), Im not worried about the pain, since I love needles (ex addict) and I enjoy pain, what worries me is how crazy ticklish I am everywhere 😅😂
This is really similar to the reason I get symbols instead of images (mostly) For me a rune or symbol, particularly from some form of media, can have more than just the meaning it has in the original medium. It can have a story significance, a personal emotional significance, and the meaning can grow and change with you as you get older I, for one, am going to be covered in runes by the time I'm done. I have 4 currently and my most recent one was the 8 trigram seal on my stomach that took 2.5 hours (and hurt really bad lol)
The part where they’re talking about apprentices absolutely blows my mind. I’ve seen people get apprenticeships at multiple shops whereas in my time it was almost impossible to get an apprenticeship and if you DARED to leave and pop up at another shop you would be ex-communicated
With the inconsistency's in the m bird tattoo I feel like they simply wanted an 'autograph sleeve' like friends, co-workers etc sign with a the easy bird since its easier then names for non tabooers since some are blown to hell and others actually look somewhat carefully done. I could be absolutely wrong tho.
I drew my tattoo, and the tattooist did a couple of changes to help it stay on me long term. I was drawing it on myself with henna for months before i worked up the courage to actually get it tattooed. I'm kind of 50/50 on wether i would draw something to go on myself again. On one hand, I like the control of the exactness. But on the other hand, i think that if im buying art i may as well get the best art i can
My fist tattoo was writing on my ribcage. I admit it didn’t hurt like I thought it would. But kirts not wrong. In the middle of it it started to hurt/feel uncomfortable and you have to almost calm your self down
I have a couple of finger tattoos and was specifically advised by my regular artist to go to a hand poke artist because they tend to last better. That's crazy how that tattoo fell out completely within a week and then to go again
Now, when people ask for certain tattoos, I sent directly to one of your videos for reference and so I don’t have to tell them everything that you have to say, and you say it a little bit nicer than I do lol
My shoulder tattoo took 6-8 hours, I guess it’s a good sign that I don’t really remember how much it hurt? I remember the dull pain that I just sort of got used to. Maybe it’s just because the shoulder is generally very low on the tattoo pain scale
I've got Boomer parents. Back when I was 18 they gave me a "get tattooed, I'll kick you out." At 42 I got my first. My dad was "really? You got *that* okay" (it's a little vampire bat) my mom was like :/ but also "you're an adult, it's not like I can change your mind." It was about what I expected, but they were still upset I didn't tell them right away.
lol I understand his opinion but personally I’ve done the same and love them primarily due to it being my own design. I only have 2 tattoos both of which were drawn by me and I don’t think I would like them nearly as much if someone else had done it
i disagree with "don"t draw your tattoos" either this is exactly what you want for reasons more than just aesthetics or you can 100% ask your artist to redraw it better
Because the people that used to get tattoos were sailors, criminals, gang members, bikers, etc... it carried a negative stigma but now that tattoos are so mainstream it's no longer a big deal. Im fm NW IN. Right outside of Chicago and tattoos weren't legal until, like, not that long ago. Its kinda wild to think about actually. My dad asca biker was getting them in the late 80s , early 90s from Roy Boy and Roys first ex wife Jeannie, before the laws were changed!
I only have 1 tattoo, and I sat for 7 hours for it. it is on my shoulder and upper arm. it honestly did not hurt much more than a moderately bad sun burn. I understand other places would hurt a lot more. I do have one more that I would like to have, but finances prevent it. I will not get it done "cheap" because I have to carry it for the rest of my life. the one I have cost $550, 6 years ago. it has faded a little bit, but really still has sharp lines and very much looks like it did as soon as it healed. I think people should think a lot more about how they will feel about it in 10 years, before committing to having it forever.
On my last tattoo, that FML feeling came near the end of a 9 hour session on my forearm. Not a super sensitive area for the most part. The artist was going back in and touching up some details. I think it was mostly the outside of my wrist where there's a little tendon that was the worst.
Jsyk in the uk, Ireland and some parts of Europe ‘traveller people’ refers to a specific ethnic group, just letting u know in case u ever say ‘traveller people are the worst’ outside of the US 😅
Tattooist wasn’t sure about my first tattoo as it was on my neck and I might not be able to take the pain and I would jump out of the chair half way through. I showed him the name I burned into my hand (red hot metal-smelled like crispy bacon) and he said “get in the chair” 😂😂
How does that old guy know his daughter isnt a promiscuous woman? Im sure she's not lol but in theory he should have thought instantly, "shes clearly not a sailor...that only leaves one option"
As someone with a full arm sleeve and chestplate, both hands, including fingers, most of my other forearm, 1/3rd of my upper arm, 2/3rd of my lower right leg and 1/2 of my left thigh, the tattoo pain never stops 😂Still doesn't stop me from suffering for epic shit though lol
Love your no-nonsense videos! However I disagree re: never using designs drawn by clients. I have designed ALL of my tattoos myself except two. One is going to be covered once I have enough money for a cover-up backpiece. The other one is awesome. I still love all of my tats except the backpiece. But tbh I used to teach paint class so am probably more trained than the average client.
I think being upfront and honest with people makes you a good boss. I much prefer this type of person in all aspects of life. If, I make a mistake, call me on it. But be kind and not a dick. Also fair is better than nice.
My first tattoo took about an hour to do and it wasn't too bad. My second tattoo took about 3 hours, my third one took 15 minutes, and my 4th tattoo took about 4 hours. The one that hurt the worst was the 3rd tattoo because she kept going too deep and the ink blew out.
"Don't draw it yourself. I've never seen good results. " Nah, that's 100% bs. My sister and I have a matching tattoo that I drew. They came out amazing. Much better than I anticipated. If a tattoo artist can draw a tattoo and have it be good, then a regular artist can do the same
Overwhelming sensation of FML? nah... It legitimately doesn't hurt. Why do some people refuse to believe that some people don't think it hurts? Honestly a headache is worse. The last tattoo i got was on the back of my forearm and back of my hand. With thin, super dark lines. The owner of the shop walked in near the end and asked how the pain was. I said not too bad at all. He said "yeah sure!". It's so annoying. And I'm not even saying some people have better tolerance for pain, maybe some people sensory perception of pain is duller than others. Maybe both, I dunno. Shit doesn't hurt.

Your attitude is the same as my mentors I love it hahahaha
4:15 looks at three of my four tattoos that I designed, one of which I drew from ground up. "well ....."
😂 I had the same feeling. Traced my dogs ears and just had them tattooed on my leg
lol I understand his opinion but personally I’ve done the same and love them primarily due to it being my own design.
The only difference between tattooed people and non tattooed people is that tattooed people dont care if you're tattooed or not.
Lmao I just saw a dude with an arm band with the tree silhouette coming out of it. He had two cheesy tattoos in one.
I doubt ill ever get a tattoo, but i appreciate the art form. But the child bird tattoo is kinda a vibe haha
My friend said I had no pain tolerance when I told them that my sternum was terrible . And he has 0 tattoos 😂
Dude you burned a name into your hand?! You cool 😎
Bro “c*m gutters” is one of the filthiest things I’ve ever heard 🤣🤣
If a tattoo artist can draw a tattoo and have it be good, then a regular artist can do the same
Lol to the one with flash in the background lol dumbest tatoo trends..😂
2 of mine were drawn by me and my brother but the tattooist was told to make any edits they wanted to before printing the stencil
