Edita pone los pelos de punta! Ella es tan emocionante! Interpreta tan bien el personaje y su canto se hace sublime! No habrá nada Igual! Gran producción perfectamente acompañada ! Y dirigida nada más y nada por Richard Bogyne, (esposo de otra mítica soprano como la Sutherland).

This nigh must go down as having been one of the great legendary performances that went down in history ... Like Sutherland’s debut in Lucia. Gruberova is one of the true legends of Bel Canto! What an artist!
This performance is a pure perfection, from the begining to the end, all performers are doing very well, Edita is giving her best Elisabetha. Such production is among the best opera performances, direction, production, singing. This is equal to famous 1957 La Scalla Anna Bolena with Maria Callas. Just an ultimate production of this opera. What a shame this is not comercially released and available !! Professionally taken recording must float around in such a horrible sound and picture quality !! Anyway thousand thanks for posting this again on youtube.
In my opinion this is even far from being the penultimate production - the Elizabeth of Devereux is much more than a couple of high notes placed at the end of a concertato or a cabaletta. La Gruberova in 1990 was still able to dominate her low and middle registers, but she was - and still is - inadequate as far as the interpretation is concerned, looking very much like an old silent movie star striving to express emotional intensity with comical results. Who does not know Beverly Sills video version may not have an idea as to how this difficult role should be rendered: that is PURE perfection, the perfection of a singer and an actress acting together. Not to talk about the rest of the cast, which in Gruberova's production is always second-rated just to emphasize the role of the prima donna.

I know complete Beverly Sills production and have the same feeling like you from the Editaś one - overacted and hysterical (look, how personal opinion can be different!), and the result is comical for me like the Edita´s for you. Unfortunately I do not like Beverly´s voice colour, so however I consider her a fenomenal artist, can not enjoy her singing at all. I know this Barcelona production by heart and I can not help, the whole production is a perfection, conducting, acting, costumes etc. it is not only about Gruberova. You are very unfair towards the Sara, Roberto and Duca of Nottingham ( and corus and all the minor roles) as I think they all are very good and not "second-rated" chosen purposely so that Edita´s "mediocre" art shone more.... What wrong you could find with Sara for example? There are not too much better ones....
giant469, Imho Beverly Sills sounds and looks more like a singing frog in that opera movie that you talk about, in comparison to this. Edita has a different interpretation, different voice, everything different!! She is no Sills and she does no remake of Sills and thats all!! And you may not like it but please don't try to give us a professional oppinion, this is ridiculous, mate, no offence

Well wasn’t THAT an Elisabetta for the ages!! Saw Sills do this “live” about 6 times and she too was sensational. When I heard Gruberova sing I puritani at the Met the year after this it made me realize her voice was twice the size as Beverly’s. Although size isn’t everything. I guess.
Even Doris Soffel and Fernado De La mora are very very good there. Her, because she is a subtile singer, him because he has amazing high note with a quite good conducted voice. And especially because booth are 100% involved, like Grubi is. Thanks Rickie for this, for sure!!!

The usual Gruberova: she sings the whole opera concentrating just on the three main high notes -- at the end of the cabaletta, of the concertato (indeed impressive) and of the final aria. Otherwise, she goes off in flip-flops across the stage, with some lapses in taste that will remain memorable (“non regno, non vivo,” for example, is creepy)
Can't understand why is highly rated because video is so poor. If the Audio is satisfactory, may need ti remove live camera and substitute a still frame
