    thanks for all the positive comments. Here are some replies to various comments:
    the indian tiles were bought in India…
    Grout - indoors is standard powdered grout, coloured with paint; outdoors i use BAL grey, or cement with cement dye added
    Flat Bases - indoors, i use old kitchen units/furniture which has the plasticy coating on, cut to size. outdoors, i use hardibacker cement board
    Design - i have an approx idea of what i want to do, but in reality, the work progresses by placing textures and shapes and colours alongside each other. I tend to glue as i go along. I am very much stimulated by the materials that I acquire.
    Tools - Lepponite wheel cutters for glass (and my old set I use for bone china), grozing pliers & glass cutters; and traditional ceramic tile cutters
    Hope this helps

    Lovely. I wish you’d shown us how you actually attach the materials to the base, and how you grout the finished work.

      thanks, I use so many different adhesives that it would be difficult to show in this film, which was actually made for a project to showcase my work at the time (a few years ago) so not really intented to be a tutorial…. there are many of those on TH-cam…

    Lady, you are a rock star of the mosaic world. I am so inspired by your work, you are so creative. I have shared this with my fiancé, as we are both logical, technical people yet with a strong artistic streak and looking to sell our homes and buy a new one together. We don't care for all new and shiny, we want character. I enjoy upcycling and this is deifnitely one way of achieving that. Thank you!

      i use a powdered ceramic tile adhesive (thin set in US) which mixes up to peanut butter consistency. this allows you to fill the space below curved objects to make fit

    Oh wow!! This is amazing, your work is spectacular Katy! Have you been doing mosaic art for long? Wonderful pieces :) I just made my first tiny piece last night, so much satisfaction (still have to grout). What adhesive do you recommend and is it advisable to remove extra that squishes out from under the piece just stuck on? Thanks! Love your work :)

    • @KatyGalbraith
      @KatyGalbraith  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, advisable to remove excess adhesive. I use ceramic tile adhesive which i buy in powdered form, and allows me to work with curvy pieces and tesserae of different heights.

    Loved the video. Your mosaic's are so unique and edgy. This is exactly the style I've been looking for!! My husband and I are both eclectic and this very much would compliment that very much. I can hardly wait to get started. I have more than 5,000 beads including pearl, precious and semi precious stones, lapis lazule, jade, brownstone, blackstone, cherry quartz, rainbow fluorite and some sterling silver beads and charms. I'm going to use those kind of things along with broken china plates, teapots and cups. I'm even going to cut a cup in half vertically and put that on the backsplash. Something just to be different. Can't wait to start! Thanks for the great video~~ So many ideas.

      tile cutters & leponitte wheels are the best two for cutting, and then glass scorers and grozing pliers if you really get into using glass. The important thing is to make sure you are using the right adhesives and the right boards for what you are doing, espically if your mosaics are going outside - and if you are in a cold area with severe winters, stick to glass and bone china and cement based products. Hope that helps

    sensational ... talk about imagination meets mastery!! elegant workmanship ... I am a newbie and want to know do you have any hints as to how you get the grout smooth when you are working with uneven objects? In other words if I use my finger between two objects of different projectile like lets say a button and a piece of mirror, the grout wants to be concave or convex, and I want it to be sloping or flat to look more refined??? are there any tools, I have tried pottery and sculpting tools to no avail, which is hampering my creativity because I want it to look refund, not lumpy. Thanx

    • @KatyGalbraith
      @KatyGalbraith  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +BarbaraL Lowell i would grout from the lower item to the top. With experience you will learn to pace yourself with height items, choosing those that don't have such a difference in height. Early pieces of mine, which had all manner of height issues were a nightmare to grout. Also do your grouting in different stages, put in on, let cure a bit, clean up the tops of the tiles (avoiding the grout lines), cure a bit more, then a polish off, where the grout should be set comfortably within the lines. Brushing off with a soft brush is a final finish which gives a good professional look at the end
