  • In today's video, Paul from The Studio Rats is seeing if it is possible to dial in a Soldano SLO tone using the new Boss Katana Artist GEN 3.
My favorite High gain guitar amp is the Soldano SLO, its one of those desert island amps that I've lusted after since the 1980's when it first came out. Arguably the Boss Katana is a more versatile amp with its multiple channels and effects, but can it live up to the mighty Soldano?

Awesome. Definitely in the same ballpark, nearly identical. SLO slightly darker, but I prefer brighter tones myself, so this will be perfect. Thank you!

Both sound great and the Katana is very useable. I think I prefer the SLO tho as it seems to have more of a mid grunt that would sit better in a band mix.

I’m positively loving my gen 3 especially with my mk2 as a stereo pair of 112’s .

I'm listening to this through good PA speakers and I can say the difference is night and day. The Katana is good. Plenty of body and mids. But the Soldano has wayyy more clarity and much more detailed high end. I can also see you have the treble down slightly on the Soldano so there's more room for that high end if needed.

Ha! I actually favor the recorded Katana sound over the SLO. Sounds more open, with better lows. Not sure how those lows translate to everything fitting in a big mix, but it's good that they are there, so that they can be taken out (vs. not having them).

Both sound good, but between them I prefer the Soldano. Though, I’m willing to bet if the Katana was further tweaked, via the software, the tones could be even more alike.

Very good but the Soldano seems to be a bit more open

Hey, compare the prizes of that katana to the SLO. The SLO looks cooler on stage but has less than 10% of the features the katana offers.

2:37 Bloom on sounds different. The only youtube content that switches on the bloom while holding a chord.

Ever tried a Marshall Code 100 Combo? They get far too much hate.

katana sounds great but compared to the soldano it sounds too clinical while the soldano has character.

I prefer the Soldano, the high end is way different on the Boss Katana Artist Head Gen 3 than the Soldano. It is more pronounced, more "ear catching" than the Soldano. Takes away from the midrange focus of the Soldano.

Close … the Katana seems a bit brighter than the Soldano.

Heresy. I preferred the recorded sound of the Katana, but expect if actually in the room and playing, I’d be stating the opposite.
