Before taking everything apart and soldering in the resistors, I would suggest installing some jumpers and testing out different impedances. Even though the specifications say 100 ohms, you may find a different impedance produces the best sound for your system, when you actually listen to it and test out different resistors. I do this with new cartridges since my pre-amplifier allows me to select different impedances, and I often find that a higher impedance produces a sound that I prefer more.
Whatever your impedence, you will hear super fast effortless transient response, astonishing transparency, a more 3D open sound, with instrument behind instruments with air spaces in between.them, on a front to back plane. Try it with 20 ohms and see what you think. Increase the impedence if you think it needs to sound brighter. That's one thing increasing the impedence will ALWAYS do.
Yes indeedy, working on a preamp board can be a a lot more painful than a power amplifier or even an integrated amplifier! I'm working on a Luxman C-03 that you have to unscrew the connectors and standoffs like yours. What a pain! It seems manufacturers deliberately designed preamps not to be worked on?!

Any half-decent step up transformer into an MM stage will beat the large majority of active MC pre-amps.

You're getting a free csrtridge. Why don't you.just buy an inexpensive MC preamp?

Or just get a good outboard phono stage
